Johnson's lies (again) Why do people still believe him?

I referred on the PMQT discussion to an interview on GMB this morning with a lawyer, Peter Stephanovic who has produced a video debunking several of Johnson's "facts".

I've started a new thread because the one about PMQT is quite specific.

Stephanovic was interviewed on GMB this morning by Susannah Reid and Alistair Campbell and the PM was defended by his biographer Andrew Gimson.

Here's a link to the GMB interview www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScFh94J7SV4

Watching Alistair Campbell I was reminded of the accusations against him and Blair about the lies told to the country over the Iraq war. Thousands of people, with reason, dislike Blair, some of them intensely, because of the lies.

Johnson has lied through his teeth on many occasions but still people believe him. Why is this?

I haven’t seen it yet but DH tells me even Baroness Varsey on The Last Leg appears to loathe Johnson. And Anna Soubry wrote a scathing article in last weeks Times.

Ah Warsi, noticed she’s still hanging on to her Baroness title, and hasn’t resigned from the Conservative party. Oh no, Don’t tell me she didn’t know what the stance was from the Conservatives towards Israel and Palestine., but as a Baroness it doesn’t matter!!!

Here is Cummings on Johnson; he worked with him for long enough so he ought to know:

^“He rewrites reality in his mind afresh according to the moment’s demands. He lies — so blatantly, so naturally, so regularly — that there is no real distinction possible with him, as there is with normal people, between truth and lies. “^

Cummings is a bitter little man with a massive chip on his shoulder because he was sacked. I wouldn’t trust anything that came out of his mouth.

I don’t think Boris lies he just doesn’t give the answers you want.

As the answer I want is the truth, Stephania1954, of course he doesn't give the answers I want.

Perhaps you could give us an example of Johnson actually telling the truth?

Alegrias1 Sat 10-Jul-21 20:14:00

Johnson lies as though there's no tomorrow.

I just can't think of what to say. Do you think the fact that he has been sacked twice for lying is just because people were picking on him?

If a politician is telling the truth, no matter now often they are asked a question they won't be tripped up because they will be telling the truth.

Surely a hostage to fortune if ever there was one. This statement can so easily be proved to be wrong. I'd get out the tin hat if I were you...

MayBee70 Sat 10-Jul-21 19:28:51

How can you say this: as someone who works in a care home you have watched this government sending covid infection ridden patients from hospitals to care homes to infect other people (which includes a friend of mine who died). I don’t understand your logic sad.

Stephania1954 Sat 10-Jul-21 19:22:29

I like Boris and I like Matt Hancock. I never voted Conservative until the last election always voted LibDem.
I don’t think Boris lies he just doesn’t give the answers you want.
But everyone ask yourself where would we be now had Jezza’s Labour Party been elected. Still bickering over Brexit, dithering like the rest of Europe over the vaccine ( if there would have been one). I cringe when politicians are repeatedly asked the same question slightly differently just to try and trip them up.
I think whatever Boris does some-one will say it’s wrong. Open up/ keep lockdown I am fed up with people wanting to stay home and keep lockdown. Who is going to pay for all this? Having worked in the care industry throughout this pandemic I am fed up with these restrictions. People desperate to go abroad but refusing to work in a office or even go back to work. Last summer parents taking kids to crowded beaches but saying school’s weren’t safe. Oh how the NHS and is care workers would have loved to have stayed at home and been paid or even worked from home. Furlough has been a great holiday for some. So let’s this Country back to working.

Much to my eternal shame and self beating upping I voted conservative once and ONly once in my entire adult life , to avoid that bunch of commies in charge at labour from getting in!! Unfortunately for the nation I think a huge amount of voters did the same for very similar reasons and boy! Aren't we living the nightmare of regretting that decision!?

Never mind, Gabrielle56. Isn't there more joy in heaven over one sinner who repenteth...? grin

Though what on earth you thought that 'bunch of commies' was going to do to the UK is a mystery to me.

The political threads are captured by the same few Gransnetters posting the same views time and time again

Actually, I've been quite intrigued by the number of unfamiliar names that have popped up in this thread to join in the Johnson disapproval chorus. Perhaps the silent majority is revving up grin

twinnytwin The govt may have a large majority but they were elected by a minority of those who voted. Your misunderstanding is why some of us keep repeating the same things, over and over again.

Pointing out to people that they have got something wrong is not bullying.

Alegrias1 Sat 10-Jul-21 10:10:40

Well this is not bullying, but it is a fact, which sometimes gets classed as bullying, for some reason.

The Conservatives got 43% of the vote in 2019. So he was never, ever popular with "most" people. Right now, 39% of people think Johnson's doing a good job as PM. Still not "most people".

Its perfectly acceptable to say why you support Johnson and the Conservatives, but if its based on made up stuff you're going to get challenged.

twinnytwin Sat 10-Jul-21 09:53:20

Boris was elected with a huge majority and his popularity continues with most people. The political threads are captured by the same few Gransnetters posting the same views time and time again and, to my mind, bullying anyone who doesn't agree with them. No wonder folk don't join in. I read them all, but rarely comment due to the nastiness.

MayBee70 Sat 10-Jul-21 09:50:42

I think this will catch him out because everyone knows he’s not a football fan. I bet he’s never willingly gone to a game in his life before the Euros.

Gabrielle56 Sat 10-Jul-21 09:40:43

Someone who actually hates football but thinks that by squeezing into a footie shirt over his work shirt he'll fool us into thinking he's a fan!!!? And why's Carrie Antoinette taking up a valuable seat at the matches? Fan? I doubt it SOOOOOmuch! Someone else could have attended, maybe a real fan?....

Gabrielle56 Sat 10-Jul-21 09:37:45

Boz

Johnson's strength, despite an unsuitability for the job, is that he is not Corbyn and he took a decisive stand on Brexit, as far as the voters were concerned. Any opposition to J will have to come from opposition parties. Voters need to be convinced that there is something better. The Conservative party will run with him as long as he pulls in votes. I know this is a simplified view but as most people don't give a toss, believable.

Much to my eternal shame and self beating upping I voted conservative once and ONly once in my entire adult life , to avoid that bunch of commies in charge at labour from getting in!! Alegrias1 Sat 10-Jul-21 09:33:09

Ah well, at least he didn't close the libraries...

Galaxy Sat 10-Jul-21 09:14:21

He doesnt have baggage shock

kjmpde Sat 10-Jul-21 09:12:49

The British generally like the underdog and Boris comes across as a bumbling fool rather than a liar. Maybe that is why people still like him.? He certainly doesn't have the baggage that Teresa May had (she didn't support the police when they said they needed extra support to squash terrorism), he was not responsible for the eventual closing of libraries as David Cameron did.
Time will tell but as they say bull sh*t baffles brain. Boris certainly has a talent for the former

trisher Sat 10-Jul-21 09:06:33

Well Lucca if Boris isn't one I assume we can take "snowflake" as meaning anyone who is honest and truthful, and "yes" men as being men who believe what they say and stick to their word.

Lucca Sat 10-Jul-21 08:39:49

I’d still like answers to my questions!!

MayBee70 Sat 10-Jul-21 08:13:20

But Lucca . Johnson ‘took one for the team’ y’know. What a guy!

Lucca Sat 10-Jul-21 07:56:49

Yorki. “ I happen to like Boris Johnson, he's not a snow flake like a lot of the other " yes" men.”

Who are the yes men ?what are the examples of them being “snowflakes” ? what do you mean by “snowflakes”?.
Genuine questions
