Johnson's lies (again) Why do people still believe him?

I referred on the PMQT discussion to an interview on GMB this morning with a lawyer, Peter Stephanovic who has produced a video debunking several of Johnson's "facts".

I've started a new thread because the one about PMQT is quite specific.

Stephanovic was interviewed on GMB this morning by Susannah Reid and Alistair Campbell and the PM was defended by his biographer Andrew Gimson.

Here's a link to the GMB interview www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScFh94J7SV4

Watching Alistair Campbell I was reminded of the accusations against him and Blair about the lies told to the country over the Iraq war. Thousands of people, with reason, dislike Blair, some of them intensely, because of the lies.

Johnson has lied through his teeth on many occasions but still people believe him. Why is this?

Do we believe because we don’t like to think we got it wrong
……well this person didn’t get it wrong I wouldn’t vote for him if he was the last man standing
montymop what charisma??? He hides it well !! he has as much charisma as Putin or Trump !

He's a politician, what do you expect?

Honesty. Yes, I do expect it and I'm not going to lower expectations.

People know he lies and just don’t seem to care. What a thought to have about a leader of a once great country. We must be the laughing stock of Europe. I have met Sunak on a few occasions and his views seem to be quite right wing, we need leadership material in the centre ground.

I always wonder why, when there is any PR problem to do with well known figures , that the tv programmes always drag out the celebrity's or politician's biographer (frequently when a new book by that author has just been published).
Why should we believe the word of someone who has often only "known" that person, for a short period of time, just for the purposes of writing a book to make money for themselves?
I know that some would say that the biographer willgive an unbiased opinion - but when have you ever heard a biographer give a bad comment about someone still living?

grandtanteJE65 Fri 09-Jul-21 11:00:25

These days, unfortunately, there are very few politicians anywhere who have not been caught out telling lies.

Or saying one thing before they are elected and doing the opposite after coming to power, which I find just as dishonest and despicable.

Some people genuinely like and believe in Johnson (yes, I know that is hard to believe, but some GENUINELY like Trump too!)

Others probably never listen very carefully to what a politician says, so they don't notice that he is lying, and certainly do not remember his previous words when later someone says, or even proves, that they were untruthful.

I have often wondered how this situation can be remedied, but I don't have a solution.

In private life too, I find people lie more often now than they did formerly and no-one takes them up on it either.

Perhaps that is where we need to start - confronting those who lie to us and sharpening awareness of the difference between the truth and a lie.

montymops Fri 09-Jul-21 10:59:35

I don’t agree that the charisma Boris clearly has, is an easily learned technique. Some people have it - some don’t. With Boris - you get what you see - lies and all. Not the case with many politicians.

Worthingpatchworker Fri 09-Jul-21 10:58:20

Do we believe because we don’t like to think we got it wrong? My belief, with regards to Boris is, he will say whatever suits the position. Whatever will get people on his side for that moment. He is totally incapable of sincerity or truth. We’ve lost the old style politician who came from the people and had some idea of what the people wanted. However, even they were far from perfect. Johnson is just in it for the jolly japes.

Coconut Fri 09-Jul-21 10:52:18

BlueBelle and others totally echo my feelings on BJ ?
A whole history of lies and deceit both privately and professionally, and he is allegedly leading our country. Janet Street Porter asked if we’d entertain a woman as PM who has loads of children with various partners, and we all know the answer to that. I’m speechless that this scruffy blob is where he is, he has no pride in his own appearance let alone anything else, a true embarrassment.

Subi Fri 09-Jul-21 10:51:58

He is a snake oil con man! Lies as he looks you in the eye! He is power hungry and ruthless! No empathy no morals. I fail to see any redeeming qualities, I have relatives who like him, and say he’s “doing his best” a remark I use for an incompetent person who is attempting a task beyond their capabilities! He’s supposed to be an entertaining guest, but not what’s required to lead country!

runnerbean Fri 09-Jul-21 10:44:21

Never mind the lies, what about all the questions he will not answer? Politians come and they go. One ponders on outcomes since we have one of the worst death rates in the world for the c.virus.

nipsmum Fri 09-Jul-21 10:44:11

I didn't vote for him. I don't like him and I can't take seriously someone who can't comb their own hair.

MaizieD Fri 09-Jul-21 09:43:52

now with Covid under control

With respect, Katie59, I think that is one of the weirdest uses of the words 'under control' that I have seen for quite some time.

'Under control' with thousands of new cases daily with all the health and economic consequences (my SiL's school has 30+ staff off self isolating!)? I think not...

Johnson is bored with being expected to be a leader. He can't control his cabinet or the country so he's just abandoned the lot...

BlueBelle Fri 09-Jul-21 08:09:56

I m amazed he remembers names trisher without having them written on the back of his hands Have you ever heard him try and say ‘Track and trace’ trick and tack, ta ta tart and trac tri tri trace and tick ….. ( trick would fit better)
The man has been sacked from more than one job for lying and making up stuff to fit his agenda, he opens his mouth and lies and people look at that big blobby body, dishevelled blond hair and see innocence and in their deep psyche think he’s too ‘funny and charming’ ?to lie

Gaunt47 Fri 09-Jul-21 07:39:07

WWM2 - You're exactly right. Also in this joke is the fact that there are indeed villages with NHS premises but they're open only 3 days a week with practice nurses. And there are still parts of the county with variable phone signals.

There was a joke going around which says it all IMO.
Boris Johnson visits a village in Cornwall and asks the inhabitants what the government can do for them.
"We have two big needs," says the village spokesman. "First, we have a health centre but no doctor."
Boris whips out his mobile phone, speaks for a while and then says, "I have sorted it for you, a doctor will arrive here tomorrow. Now what was your other need?"
The spokesman says, "We have no mobile phone reception at all in our village."

And that is exactly how Johnson operates.

The joke would be hilarious, but it really is accounting the truth of the matter.

I would have agreed in January after he had made such a mess of 2020, now with Covid under control he will be with us for a year plus yet, if not the full term. With an 80 seat majority they can credibly blame Covid for all the ills and divert attention from Brexit.
Johnson is popular with voters, Labour is in disarray and there is no obvious successor, so no reason to change leader

And what difference does that make, in real life?

trisher is right. That's what people like about him. He's a big personality. Same as a lot of other heads of state. Unfortunately people fall for that kind of stuff. It's celebrity culture.

Please may I point out, with due respect, that fortunately Mr Johnson is still just the head of government of the UK, and not the head of state. Whatever people may think of the monarchy, the Queen is still saving us from that horrible prospect!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 08-Jul-21 14:01:58

trisher I agree with your post of 11.58 today.

growstuff Thu 08-Jul-21 13:44:28

If they turn out to be true, rumours about the pension triple lock won't help Sunak either. I doubt very much if he's an experienced enough politician to make a success of leadership.

Dinahmo Thu 08-Jul-21 13:41:03

Johnson will crash and burn one and when that happens Tories in parliament will collapse. They really don't have a decent candidate to take from Johnson. I know that many people think Sunak is the bees knees but the way in which the SEISS grants and furloughs were dealt with was not good. Also the prevaricating over taxing the international companies and the handouts to the car manufacturers is not good. Millions have gone to Nissan in order to keep that factory in the UK. That money could have been better spent elsewhere.
