Ken Loach may be kicked out of Labour

I'm in shock.

Legendary film-maker and lifelong political activist Ken Loach could be ejected from the Labour Party, it has been rumoured on social media.

It comes after Sir Keir Starmer purged 1,000 Labour leftwingers from four “poisonous” campaign groups as the party clamps down on supporters of the leader’s predecessor, Jeremy Corbyn.

And the voters in 2019 wanted Boris to get Brexit done.

So, Labour needs a Jack the Lad leader and a single issue?

None of this nonsense about wanting to improve people's lives and run the state for the benefit of its citizens?

Whatdayisit Thu 29-Jul-21 12:01:22

Yes MayBee70 they have all acted shambolically.
Our ex Labour MP blasted Corbyn but so many people i spoke to about her were sick of her for not replying to them and for not backing Brexit. Our Tory MP has replied to me 6 times since 2019 proper replies. Unfortunately he is currently unavailable because of sex abuse charges but that is a different matter.

MayBee70 Thu 29-Jul-21 11:53:00

Does that include Corbynite Chris Williamson who actively stood and campaigned against the Labour candidate in his area thereby trying to split the vote in what was a marginal constituency. Just as he helped campaign for Galloway recently.

Whatdayisit Thu 29-Jul-21 11:35:21

Anniebach your reply about Harold Wilson shows the corruption that has always gone on in government and industry. A gravy train. I was citing Wilson as the last leftwing Labour PM. I think there was a lot of corruption in the NCB after nationalisation they wanted what the wealthy mine owners had had in many ways they obviously knew no boundaries.

And the voters in 2019 wanted Boris to get Brexit done.
All the Labour MPs wete to blame for the disaster because many had their knives in Corbyn undermining him and some still wanted Brexit.

MaizieD Thu 29-Jul-21 11:32:42

Well, thanks, Callistemon and Annieb for telling me just what I'd asked not to be told.

Or are you telling me that the electorate doesn't actually give a toss about what a party proposes to do while in government, they just go for some carefully managed 'perceptions'?

Perhaps the LP might have been better off finding some Jack the Lad for a new leader, post Corbyn; because competence and honesty doesn't seem to be cutting it.

Anniebach Thu 29-Jul-21 11:19:08

If Tony Blair is considered to be a conservative then this must be what voters want.

Blair won three consecutive general elections, ended 18 years of tory rule.

Corbyn and Michael Foot brought disastrous general election results

Callistemon Thu 29-Jul-21 11:05:22

Many extreme left wing Labour Party members don’t actually know what it’s like to actually be dirt poor.

I think that is true, Maybee

Callistemon Thu 29-Jul-21 11:03:37

Well, Blair et al seemed to know, at least for quite a while. It would seem fairly obvious - a party of moderates.

The majority do not want extremism of any kind.
They want someone who seems to be decisive - neither Corbyn then nor Johnson now are decisive.
Nor a party which is particularly divisive as both main parties are at present.

A party which appeals to the majority is, of necessity, not a party of extremism.

Winter of discontent !

When Labour realise what the majority of the electorate want and not what Labour thinks they should have, then they may win.

Anyone care to tell us what 'the majority of the electorate' want? In specific terms, not just this generalised complaint that Labour isn't in tune with voters, not even with 'it's' voters. Because I'm sick to death at reading article after article telling us that Labour isn't offering what voters want, without actually explaining what it is that they 'want'.

I don't know what voters want. I know what I want, but don't have a clue if other voters want it.

So come on then, all those who seem to know what 'the majority of the electorate want'. Do tell us..

MayBee70 Thu 29-Jul-21 10:05:49

Well I’m rejoining the Labour Party again. And for all those people going on about Cathy Come Home etc I actually grew up in the street next to where Cathy Cone Home was filmed so I understand how important it is for a government to actually care for kids living now that are like I was back then. Many extreme left wing Labour Party members don’t actually know what it’s like to actually be dirt poor.

But Michael Foot didn’t win an election did he. Let’s just constantly moan about the Labour Party and keep the Conservative party in power forever shall we….

That's because Labour were in the political wilderness as Anniebach says.

To be fair, it was probably James Callaghan who gave us Margaret Thatcher.

When Labour realise what the majority of the electorate want and not what Labour thinks they should have, then they may win.

They will never be able to introduce any of their policies unless they win power, will they!
Or is that just too simple for some to understand?
Perhaps some can't see the wood for the trees.

Lovetopaint037 Thu 29-Jul-21 09:51:09

The only way the Labour Party is ever going to be electable is to come down hard on the extreme left. At least Starmer has the guts to do it.

Harold Wilson ? A good man who kept Lord Robens in his job
as head of the National Coal Board after the Aberfan Disaster,
even though Robens was found at the enquiry to be ‘economical with the truth’

Wilson had no problem with money being taken from the disaster fund to pay for the removal of the tips, this was an illegal act.

The money was returned to Aberfan by Tony Blair

Good heavens. You mean to say the quasi Conservative Tony Blair actually did something good? Anyone would think the equally Tory light Starmer might actually be good for the country. But no, let’s just keep on fighting and allow people to think the Labour Party are not fit to govern. Goodbye NHS….

Michael Foot, 1983 election ! gave us 14 years in the political
wilderness and Thatcher.

Grany Thu 29-Jul-21 09:24:22

Before Jeremy Corbyn, There Was Michael Foot
BY
RICHARD JOHNSON
Michael Foot was a giant of Labour Party politics. The attempts by Labour centrists to diminish his legacy after his death only reveal the extent to which his socialism, like that of Jeremy Corbyn, threatened the British establishment.

Yes Callistemon that is a touching thought about the Queen and Harold Wilson.
I think the electorate has changed since Harold Wilson.

Anniebach

Who was the last far left Labour PM ?

Harold Wilson?

I would have said he was a pragmatic left winger, knew what would win elections coupled with a certain down-to-earth charm.

None since has managed to achieve that tightrope walk.

He was supposedly the Queen's favourite PM of all.

If you read the letter he is seriously concerned about local parties being silenced by regional officers making it impossiblle for them to function properly. He hasn't had a reply so maybe they are just processing his removal.
