The emergency Brexit powers for lorries has been made permanent as the government expects further and more serious disruption.

JaneJudge Thu 12-Aug-21 10:20:02

My husband's business has lost work because of Brexit too, I posted about it on another thread. Whilst I'm pleased some businesses haven't suffered, it's a bit trite to play out the I'm not affected, I alright attitude when you know others have been affected.

He has been offered several permanent roles in Europe too since Brexit and I think had he been younger and our lives less complicated, we may have gone. So I can see what may happen with skilled workers too - just from our perspective

Oh I feel so much better now some delightful Brexiteers have told us how all these teething problems will sort themselves out soon.

Must dash, a local farmer’s pigs are giving an aerobatics display this morning.

Alegrias1 Thu 12-Aug-21 10:08:18

That's nice. Some hurdles are insurmountable. Maybe you just didn't meet any. Positive thinking doesn't actually mean that anything is possible. Or maybe your company, alone of all those in the world, has never met a real hurdle.

Like the one I worked in, which found itself unable to recruit suitably qualified staff in the UK after Brexit and has moved to the EU, resulting in 100 UK redundancies.

Patronising? Dismissive? Sorry hmm

Petera Thu 12-Aug-21 10:05:07

GrannyGravy13 In business you see a hurdle, know it’s not insurmountable, look for ways to get over, around or in some cases under it.

What you do not do is go out and buy a set of hurdles and put them up yourself.

MaizieD Thu 12-Aug-21 10:04:05

We are in this situation because of lies and deceit. There's nothing we can do about it now but those who got us here are gaily smiling through, like some demented Vera Lynn figure.

Those who got us here seem to think that exercising their right to vote on whichever way they chose is in no way at all connected to the fact that it had adverse consequences.

Well now I've told you how it sounds.

Whether they are teething troubles or not, the Pollyanna approach isn't enough when we are talking about the economic health of our country. Its not about muddling through, showing what we're made of, looking on the bright side.

We are in this situation because of lies and deceit. There's nothing we can do about it now but those who got us here are gaily smiling through, like some demented Vera Lynn figure.

As for business - I was a Project Manager in "business" for a decade. The PMs who looked on the bright side and only thought about the positives generally failed spectacularly.

Sorry, but being positive is not the same as PollyAnna approach

In business you see a hurdle, know it’s not insurmountable, look for ways to get over, around or in some cases under it.

I can assure you that our business has been successfully running for over forty years so failed spectacularly does not apply.

Whitewavemark2 I was taught (admittedly a few years ago) if you say you have no drivers/money/milk (replace as appropriate) it means you haven’t any, it does not mean you have a shortage.

Picky yes

Correct yes

^The U.K. has got some teething problems but constantly being angry cannot be doing anyone any good.^

I am a glass/cup/life half full person, not half empty (if life gives me lemons I make lemonade)

All joking aside, do you realise GG13 just how dismissive and patronising that is?

I did not intend to be dismissive or patronising Alegrias1

I just have a philosophy in life to get on with things it has served me well thus far.

I concentrate on the positives, family, health, etc. If I was to worry and look for negatives with a business, five children (one in the armed forces) along with eight GC I would be a nervous wreck and no use to anyone.

It isn’t milk that is the problem it is the delivery.

NO DRIVERS

There is a shortage of drivers Whitewavemark2 to state NO DRIVERS is totally wrong.

No drivers - to deliver the milk.

True.

Shortage of drivers

True

Not sure what your problem is.

Whitewavemark2 Thu 12-Aug-21 09:44:19

There are no Brexit benefits.

People like the ERG have successfully fooled the U.K. into Brexit now they are busy working out how to fool the U.K. into accepting that climate crises either does not exist or is not as bad as suggested so that they can continue shovelling the money into their pockets.

JaneJudge Thu 12-Aug-21 09:43:12

Moana said,

I have crossed the horizon to find you, I know your name They have stolen the heart from inside you, but this is not who you are You know who you are, who you truly are

I don't think she ever mentioned milk or used her boat to fetch it

Phone roaming charges have been reinstated.

One of the many lies told by brexiters who said that would never happen

One of the many lies told by the providing phone companies who said they wouldn’t do this, and who do not need to do this. This is about money grabbing, nothing else.

It's about making a profit, which is what businesses do, unless laws stop them, which being in the EU did.

Always been the case outside EU anyway. I suppose companies like to make a profit.

We like companies to make a profit, then they can pay taxes.

And of course we're all overjoyed that we'll have to pay roaming charges again when we visit EU countries. It's one of the incredible Brexit Benefits..

I don't do twitter.

As Einstein said, Twitter is a complete waste of time.

Or maybe it was Princess Jasmine, let me check.....

No not Princess Jasmine, definitely Moana…

Alegrias1 Thu 12-Aug-21 09:30:50

Oh of course, if it wasn't for all those pesky rules and regulations about the Environment, Discrimination, H&S and so on, they'd be making even more profits. Don't you just love unconstrained capitalism?

One of the big issues is a drastic shortage of building materials of all kinds.

Our new double glazing windows have been on order for a month now and deliver is constantly being put back.

Now they think possibly November.

The same is true of all building materials.

Exaggeration

There are some pockets of shortages, due in part to containers still relocating (Ever Given (think that’s the correct name) container ship arrived 4 months late into the U.K.) along with all the extra home renovations during lockdowns.

Gosh Alegrias1 you best stay away from Twitter as all the posted funnies will probably offend your sensibilities…

Alegrias1 the picture with words was posted to lighten the morning not as a fact

Well, that's worked well, hasn't it?

So it's OK to attribute quotes to people even if they didn't say them? Next you'll be telling us everybody knew Brexit was going to be a disaster but it was all just a bit of fun.

(I get intensively hacked off with the whole Einstein said.... thing. He was too busy changing the way we look at the world to make superficial quotes.)
