Afghanistan: Fresh hope for ex-Marine Pen Farthing's bid to rescue 200 dogs and cats from Kabul
The defence secretary says Pen Farthing, his staff and the animals will now be able to leave on the chartered aircraft.

Anyone else rooting for Pen and his animals ?

AGAA4 Sat 28-Aug-21 17:05:14

I do believe a lot of problems seem to have been caused by Mr Farthing being adamant about not leaving without his staff and animals. Now he has kept his promise only to the animals and left his staff behind.
I don't know if his staff have the right papers to come here but this endeavour has caused a lot of disruption for them.

Callistemon I m with you 100% I don’t know him I don’t have any feelings for him, but I don’t understand how anyone can put an animals life ahead of a humans and I think he has done a big disservice to his staff, like the captain of a boat he should have been the last to leave.
I hope to God the staff can get out but now it looks less likely What a mess

Bluebelle I thought he was a truly good man but I don't know how he could desert his staff, especially female staff.

Yes, an almighty mess.

we are also responsible for the extinction of many species of animals.
But dogs and cats are not endangered as far as I know.

Why should humans always come first?
It's the women and girls left behind I fear for.
Cats and dogs can take their chances, there are feral cats and dogs in many countries.
Why should we think we should own them as pets anyway?

Callistemon Sat 28-Aug-21 16:56:04

I'll mention that to my ex-naval husband and my decorated ex-RAF father. And I'd mention it to his decorated ex-RAF father as well, but he's no longer with us.

It would be interesting to know what they think but I won't ask you because that could compromise your anonymity.

Dinahmo Sat 28-Aug-21 16:55:04

Why should humans always come first? We have done immense damage to the planet and we have started so many wars which have killed billions of people over the years and we are also responsible for the extinction of many species of animals.

Lot of people on here today who think they know me and what my background is, and feel they can comment on my approach to things based on their preconceptions. Ah well.

We only know what you post on social media.

Callistemon Sat 28-Aug-21 16:51:35

Well I didn't mention you, but if the cap fits.

No, it doesn't

Read my posts on this thread and please retract that statement.

No, I don't hate him at all
That is a childish thing to say! You don't understand the Forces, obviously.

I cannot understand how an ex-Marine Commando can leave behind "his men" - in his case many vulnerable women.

I hope for their sakes they can leave.

Its those who are suggesting he should just have manned up and stayed behind, like some stiff-upper-lipped hero from the Big Book of Boys' Adventures.

That is truly insulting to anyone in the Forces who has ever put his men and women first.

I don't know whether they are in the air yet so until they are anything could happen. The Taliban would not give the staff permission and they - the staff - wanted the animals to get out. When people are that focused on the animals they come first. Very sad.

tickingbird Sat 28-Aug-21 16:34:55

It’s a terrible mess all round.

Alegrias1 Sat 28-Aug-21 16:32:38

hmmm...

The Afghan staff's paperwork was not acceptable. The animals went in the hold.

Its not the people on here who want to save the animals that are being sentimental. Its those who are suggesting he should just have manned up and stayed behind, like some stiff-upper-lipped hero from the Big Book of Boys' Adventures.

tickingbird Sat 28-Aug-21 16:32:28

In all fairness I very much doubt that’s his choice. That would be down to Taliban or Biden’s paperwork or possibly UK government.

Playing devil’s advocate here but staff at an animal shelter wouldn’t have an automatic right to come here.

BlueBelle Sat 28-Aug-21 16:28:35

So he and animals out and staff left behind Thats outrageous
No time for it at all

Alegrias1 Sat 28-Aug-21 16:20:52

There are people who really hate him, aren't there?

Callistemon Sat 28-Aug-21 16:18:02

Part of the Royal Marine ethos:

Unselfishness. Oppo first; Team second; Self Last

Yes he’s left staff behind, just him and the animals.

Welshwife Sat 28-Aug-21 15:46:03

I have seen a report that he and the animals were lifted out but his staff left behind!

Maudi Sat 28-Aug-21 15:32:28

Keep reading so much conflicting news, no idea what's happening.

humptydumpty Sat 28-Aug-21 14:14:11

Is the chartered plane still there?

Whatdayisit Sat 28-Aug-21 14:12:41

He's through with animals but not sure if it's taken off yet..

Grandmajean Sat 28-Aug-21 14:01:42

Is tis really happeningGermanshephersmum I keep seeing conflicting reports and , to be honest , have stopped reading a friend's account on a Facebook page because it upsets me so much.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 28-Aug-21 12:21:46

So good to know others give rescues another chance too. And, wonderful news, apparently Pen and staff and all the animals will leave on their charter flight ‘in the next hour’ according to Sky. Thank you God. I hope others will be able to fill the rest of the seats.
