Well I'm from a working class background but please Angela Rayner having a go at Raab did herself and Labour no favours.

theworriedwell Sun 26-Sept-21 12:04:53

Can't see what's wrong with youse. Maybe it is my Northern Ireland background but you singular youse plural.

Jaxjacky Sun 26-Sept-21 11:57:57

Very common in my Northern Irish DH too trisher, me, I’m pure ‘ampshire ‘og.

trisher Sun 26-Sept-21 11:39:55

So people don't understand dialect at all "Youse" is a common expression in many Northern dialects.

JenniferEccles Sun 26-Sept-21 11:30:26

And she can’t even speak grammatically.
“Youse lot”.
What’s that all about?
Ye gods.

How many more times?
Accent is not choice of language.
If Mrs. Rayner posted that message on Gransnet it would be taken down as 'not in the spirit of Gransnet.'

Totally agree

McCluskey is defended her , will Corbyn give her a hug as he did to the chap who caused Ruth Smeeth to leave a meeting in
tears .

The H of C should represent the streets. That's why it is the H of COMMONS. The streets are full of the common. It's time they were permitted to speak in government.
When Joseph Cowen entered parliament in 1874 he was mocked for his broad Tyneside accent. It's time we moved on.

Anniebach Sun 26-Sept-21 10:43:56

You may accept ‘normal street language’, trisher I do not ,
it should be left on the streets.

trisher Sun 26-Sept-21 10:26:31

Golly if you think what she said was "foul mouthed" you must have led a sheltered life. The H of C is run on an old boy/old school system of privilege with rules that came out the ark, injecting a bit of normal street language can do nothing but good.
As GBS said "It is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman hate or despise him" The same is true for women

eazybee Sun 26-Sept-21 10:21:41

Angela Rayner described the Tories as 'a bunch of scum' and is refusing to apologise.
Speaking to Labour activists during a conference reception last night, she said: “We cannot get any worse than a bunch of scum, homophobic, racist, misogynist, absolute pile of banana republic Etonian piece of scum.”
This represents 'a normal Stockport woman'?
Most definitely uncouth.

GrannyGravy just saw the quote from Rayner , she wants to be leader of the Labour Party !

Yep, Labour forever in opposition. With the mistakes the Conservatives are making, Labour could/should be flying high?

I watched the Andrew Marr interview with Mr.Starmer. Ms.Rayner’s outburst was yesterday at conference.

The ironic thing is in 2019 Ms.Rayner is on record saying MP’s should tone down their language

JenniferEccles Sun 26-Sept-21 10:00:17

That quote from Rayner is horrific, GG13
I would imagine even staunch Labour supporters were as horrified as the rest of us at that foul mouthed outburst.
How in God’s name did she get where she is ?
Deputy leader of the Labour Party.
No wonder the party is unelectable.

lemongrove Sun 26-Sept-21 09:56:24

Cor? For.

Like I said upthread, it’s not a accent which is problematic it’s what is said.

Exactly.
Marr is quizzing Starmer on this right now, asking if Rayner is going to apologise for language like that....Starmer is stuck cor something positive to say and says ‘he will be talking to her later’.
This is the woman who says she is ready to run for the top job should it be needed!

TBH I don't see much difference between criticising Rees Mogg for his very posh accent, BJ for his inability to utter a coherent sentence and AR, who in parliament uses overly informal language (quids, scumbags) to me they all come under the heading of "could do better". As a Brum, I know how a strong Birmingham accent is perceived by some people and there are other accents that are equally prejudicial, so for anyone in the public arena, I'd say tone down the accent and don't use slang otherwise some people will only hear that rather than your message. fwiw in KS2 English, children are taught this!

I smile when I hear people say that they don’t have an accent. We all do. An accent is just a way of speaking that is shred by people from a similar background. It is often regional, if the speakers have been to school in the areas where they grew up, but not necessarily- social factors such as how parents talk are influential too.

Britain being Britain, however - run by people never willing to miss a chance to bring ‘class’ into it - has decided that some accents are higher status than others, but everyone has an accent, whether they admit it or not.

boat

I don't know about people voting for candidates with posh accents but when I was about 11 my mother told me she voted Conservative because it made her a better class of person.

I knew nothing about politics but I knew our place in the Class System and just thought, "Well, good luck with that Mum".

I don't know if the phrase had been invented by the early 50's but we were definitely The Undeserving Poor.

MissA hope you are feeling more upbeat and more like yourself soon.[ flowers]

The subject of Angela Rayner and how she sounds in Parliament has nothing to do with you or any other member of the public.

lemongrove Sun 26-Sept-21 08:53:40

Iam64

I’ve caught up again and I’m still taken with the level of judgement and snobbery.
Lemingrive’s suggestion that Harold Wilson was from Yorkshire , had the accent but must have had the rough edges knocked off him, almost made me lol.
Miss Adventure. Hope you’re feeling a bit brighter today. We could always start a gransnet cafe for those of us who made bad lifestyle choices and have regional accents. We could invite Angela, she’s a grannie now

Is Lemingrive me Iam64 by any chance?hmm
Harold Wilson was from Huddersfield, therefore from Yorkshire. He was from a middle class family and no doubt by the time he left university had altered his accent somewhat to fit in.He became more ‘Yorkshire’ and man of the people depending on who he was talking to.I remember him well, and once met him briefly at a university ‘do’.
