Petrol queues reported now on BBC news

Just watching the news showing people queuing for petrol. Apparently ‘the supply chain is under intense pressure”. BP is prioritising motorways and major routes. Deliveries are unpredictable and the army may be involved.

More talk about changing visa regs temporarily.

I'd never been to Birmingham Airport before!
And, no satnav!
I remember going with a friend to pick up our respective DC from a gap year trip - he was late and then drove extremely slowly all the way to Heathrow and they were waiting very patiently with their huge backpacks. They had managed to get there on time, despite missing a flight from Borneo or some farflung place.

Kali2 I had to get DD2 and friend to an airport and due to a mix up with the tickets it was not a local airport, it was Birmingham.

I once drove to East Midlands to pick up D3 and her friends after a girlie holiday in somewhere like Magaluf (?) only to get a phone call from home to say did I realise EMA was NOT the same as Birmingham ?
Massive dash down the A whatever without benefit of SatNav in those days.
I still go cold when I remember it!

Have driven past our two local filling stations (one in our road, and one a bit off track ) just now, no queues, both fully open.

Calli we lived in Newcastle-u-Lyme then and had to pick up an Italian niece from Heathrow. Her dad phoned in the morning to say he had made a mistake, she had to be picked up from Gatwick! We had to call BIL in South London to arrange to syphon petrol from him and neighbours so we could get back home! Oh the stress of it all.

The foreign press are having a field day blaming Johnson and Brexit for all the ills in the country, and not just European press. CNN has a long article outlining everything that is going wrong and the reasons.

We are served very ill by our press.

Of course the foreign press are having a field day with us, takes the heat off their own problems at home. Personally think the haulage companies also have much to answer for over the last 10 /15 years.

Just back from my dentist in a nearby town fuel getting a bit low so I stopped expecting a queue a couple of cars in whole petrol station only allowed £35 but result
Just have to fill our other car up now it's been in a long trip and getting low will need a full tank fir next trip so might have to do that in stages as its around £90 for a full tank !

Callistemon Wed 29-Sept-21 14:57:50

I expect everyone knows this but it might be worth posting it:

If you have to go on a journey then around 55mph is the optimum speed for fuel efficiency (traffic and speed limits permitting of course).

I remember having to go on a long but essential return journey about 20 years ago when there was a fuel strike and driving at that speed on the motorway, hoping I'd have enough fuel to get all the way home again.
I did make it home. There wasn't much traffic on the motorways either!

Don’t panic!

Sorry forgot to highlight, first two paragraphs are quotes.

*It was never about you, GG13. We know that you post sensibly and thoughtfully, even if we don't agree with what you say. (I 'think' I can speak for other posters besides myself here)

But, as Alegrias points out, infantile nonsense will be called out. It's a shame that your post got mixed up with it*

I agree. Sorry to be rude by UG does sometimes post inflammatory statements and then when called out, retracts saying, that’s not what I meant,

We no longer have to hold the reserves that we did under EU rules.
2019:
The decision by the government to cut the size of the reserve follows lobbying by UK refiners and large fuel retailers, which fund the emergency stockpiles and will face lower costs as a result.

Energy analysts said that reducing the amount of oil held in emergency reserves would leave the country more vulnerable to a prolonged supply disruption, potentially creating shortages of certain fuel-types where the country is reliant on imports, such as diesel.

Thanks for that, Callistemon.

Is there no end to the idiotic decisions made by this government?

(I do wish I could afford to subscribe to the FT; they do some excellent reporting grin )

growstuff your post of 20.46.16 was extremely insulting, whether it was directed to me or Urmstongran.

I am beginning to notice that when posters (any) resort to insulting the poster as opposed to discussing the post it is usually a sign of not having anything constructive to add.

It was true though.

I knew exactly who/what growstuff meant.

Make inflammatory and inaccurate statements day after day, and its going to get pointed out.

But, as Alegrias points out, infantile nonsense will be called out. It's a shame that your post got mixed up with it. The 'quote' facility isn't always very helpful.

Esspee

I've just driven past 4 garages here in Glasgow and it looks like business as usual. Is this "crisis" a regional thing?

Pretty sure it is.

South Manchester here and all is quiet

JaneJudge Wed 29-Sept-21 10:06:57

I think it must be Esspee

Actually that might make sense as I noticed diesel 'sold out' first and there was only unleaded left yesterday.
