"Let’s put it in simple terms, could say, one of you afford to have 10 people living in your house, feed them, clothe them, see to their medical health needs and educate them, no I think not. Yet that is what people are expecting the government to do." ajswan, yes, because they have been elected to make good on promises given. Your argument is ridiculous - of course none of us as indivuals would promise to the whole nation to house, clothe and feed 10 people and provide health and education needs. Why would we if we could not do it?
Exactly no you could not do it, but you expect the nation to do it. What part of simple terms do you not understand. How can the NHS cope with millions more people coming to this country. The problem is that the ‘do gooders’ do not tend to live in areas with a very high population of immigrants. There are areas where there are no longer any British butchers, only halal, no English hairdressers, the fish and chip shop has gone and the pie and mash shop etc. I know because I used to work in this area and saw it gradually change.
The capacity of the NHS isn't finite. Wealth generated by more people could be used to fund an expanded NHS. It isn't rocket science.
ajswan I think it is the “do badders” who tend not to live in areas of high immigration .
Sorry to say it, my “prediction” or “guess” is things will get worse and worse ! Cuts in everything and shortages - culmination of Brexit, Covid, Tories and winter ! Not a great combination ! Still, you get what you voted for……except many of us didn’t !
More of us didn’t vote for this shitshow than did, that’s the tragedy.
For those still blaming migration for all our problems, setting your xenophobia aside for a moment, factually refugees make up less than 1% of our population, we are currently around 35th in the list of countries in terms of amount of refugees, when in the EU net migration was relatively low, that is the amount of Brits leaving the country to live abroad was only a little lower than those coming to live here. Many migrants work very long hours and our country is richer for our mixed and diverse ethnicity. Yes, there are “bad” people who are not British, yes there are “bad” British people. We actually do still have plenty of “brown belt” land we could develop and masses of green spaces despite densely populated towns and cities and we are the 5th or 6th country in the world ! Yes, we should help those less fortunate than ourselves and guess what shortages of nurses, HGV drivers, farm workers, hospitality workers and care workers, not to mention the much higher costs of importing has already shown us we DO need our EU cousins to be here !

48% fully vaccinated and 28 deaths in New Zealand to date. I call that success.
Me too and I applaud Jacinda Ahern for her swift action and proper planning !
We all understand the population of NZ is tiny compared to us, but they are an Island, we are an Island, it seems we couldn’t “control” our borders despite Brexit. We allowed large events to take place (Cheltenham and football), we were late to the party on all counts, we sent elderly people back to die and spread Covid in our care homes, we did not supply our amazing NHS or care workers with proper PPE, we were late to masks, late to lockdown and now, despite 40,000 new cases every day, our government has gone very quiet !

Susieq, who do you suggest should replace them?
A pack of Brownies?
They couldn't do any worse.
A colony of beavers perhaps ?

N&P means news and politics
I don't think anything will happen, ever. I think they are a bunch of lazy, work shy charlatans. I don't think they are fit to even run a supermarket.
Completely agree and you made me smile too ! Double whammy eh ! Sorry for posting so much this morning ?
Now then people, what have I said before, about these constant whingers who are obviously failing to just get on with the job?
To be fair, my dog could do a better job, and much as I love her, she really is thick!
At least she'd have feeding everyone as a priority, doesn't have enough friends who want a knighthood to waste lots of cash, and she'd not let local councils build on all the lovely fields, either. It's not like any of that is even affordable housing.
She may, however, try to chase the beavers, so would have to learn not to (she's also capable of learning from her mistakes, unlike the current gov)
I am talking about the so called refugees who are in fact economic migrants who come to this country to milk our welfare system. I worked for 56 years paying tax and insurance. I recently saw videos where fit young men wearing designer clothes being interviewed outside a hotel that had been totally given over to Afghan refugees. They said that they were waiting for housing. Why were they not put up in army barracks instead of four star hotels. We should house our homeless and forces veterans first.
Oh dear! Is that you Nigel?
so called ?
Oh no, stop it Alegrias...

so called ?
Oh no, stop it Alegrias...deep breaths, deep breaths, don't feed the troll.
How dare you call me a troll, I thought this thread was for debates, not to insult people. Just because I have a different opinion, is that any reason for insults. And Growstuff, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. I am so disappointed with these comments, I thought that the majority of forumites on here were intelligent caring people. But there are always exceptions to this.
So in your understanding of debate ajswan, do people:
call refugees economic migrants here to milk the welfare system.
ask what part of simple terms a poster can't understand.
use the phrase do-gooders
say that without the current government many of us GNs would be dead.
etc...?
Perhaps if you actually debated things instead of hurling invective at people you'd find out if we were all intelligent caring people.
Ajswan. I was just throwing you a lifeline but never mind. You obviously have a sense of humour about as good as your debating and discussion skills

If you call your previous post 'debate' then ...
Forumites? That's a new one on me.

How was you throwing me a lifeline by saying don’t feed the troll. I can only think that you lovely gentile people do not live in areas that are affected by mass immigration. I can imagine that you are NIMBYs, If you don’t know what that means, it means, not in my back yard. I can debate and discuss without calling someone a troll. Do you actually know what that means, shame on you.
So what are we meant to debate ajswan?
Or did you expect us to agree with you?
I'm not a gentile. I'm an atheist.

Forumite sounds like some kind of building material - maybe a bit like laminate.
