The EU and Poland are on a collision course.

I hear what you're saying about your not holding extreme views, but I reckon many people might find the following on the outside edge of moderate.

"I knew once we left the rest would follow. So proud of my country for voting to leave. ?? Every leave voter should get a medal! "

I think calling it the 'outside edge' is straining the English language somewhat.

I don't understand why, having achieved their object and plunged their country into economic and political chaos, Leavers are so invested in breaking up the EU. Are they desperate for some sort of validation of their vote?

Such comments perhaps say more about where the commenter stands than the original poster.

When I worked in an inner city school I was viewed as the reactionary right. When I moved to the counties I became the left wing loony. All without changing my political stance one iota ?

I suspect that nobody ever thinks they have extreme views. I expect that most people think their views are entirely logical.

I really want to talk about the difference between opinion and reality, but its probably not relevant.

I’m certain other countries would love to leave the EU, they’re just not given the chance.

I seem to recall Macron said that he refused to hold an in/out referendum in France because the French would vote to leave.

The thing is that Poland don’t really want to leave the EU as there are many benefits to them as a poorer nation but they also want to have their own sovereignty. In other words they want to have their cake and eat it. Here in the UK we obeyed most of the rules coming from Brussels but Poland ignores the rules it doesn’t like. In the end the UK left the EU. IMO Poland either leaves the EU or obeys the rules. I don’t think the EU can let them get away with it or the whole system breaks down.

Over 50million British citizens did not vote to leave so why the pretence that the hard Brexit we've been dragged into has some sort of universal support.

Facts and statistics are continually bandied around on here but I am calling BS on your 50m, god knows where you extracted that figure.

There are only 47.6m registered voters for parliamentary elections as of March 2020. In the 2016 referendum there were 46.5m eligible voters of which 30% exercised their right not to vote. 17.4m voted leave, 16.1m voted remain.

Where on earth did you get your 50m remainers from?

Population of the UK, 67 milllion.

Number of people who voted to Leave, 17 million.

Difference, 50 million. So, by the rules of simple arithmetic, 50 million people did not vote to leave. Which is what vegansrock said. Not that there were 50 million Remainers.

Now we'll get a lecture about registered voters and so on, as though we're the ones that need this to be explained.

I don't think Macron said exactly that Ug and polling data has never suggested that it would be so.
It certainly would not be the case now. I have lost count of the number of people who have said that if they had ever thought that leaving the EU might be a good idea, they had changed their minds since seeing the impact of Brexit on the UK.

I suppose its one thing to vote to make your own country poorer and weaker, but to be gleeful, and to hope for the demise of the biggest and most successful peace-making project in the history of Europe, takes a special kind of thoughtlessness.

I didn’t say there were 50 million remainers just that 50 million of the population didn’t vote to leave. I wish people would read the text and not make things up. Macron has never said the French would vote to leave either - something else made up. I remember a few years ago some on here wetting themselves with glee when Italy voted in a right wing coalition as they were sure Italians were desperate to copy the Uk and descend into into economic chaos. Didn’t happen. I’m not sure why leavers are bothered about Polish or Hungarian politics since the U.K. has no longer any influence in those countries. Seems they are obsessed with the destruction of others’ lives as they can’t bask in the sunny uplands of Brexit since there have been no tangibles benefit for the U.K - quite the opposite, it has cost us enormous sums, far more than membership - caused unnecessary shortages of goods and labour, caused social and political division , threatened peace in Ireland - I could go on. Mind you Kent has benefitted with a massive concrete lorry park over their countryside and their sky is lit up so much they don’t need lights on at night.

The 50 million either weren’t allowed to vote or couldn’t be arsed to vote.No good quoting what they would have done.
All that mattered was the vote by those eligible to do so.
This can’t be said enough times!
