Well, Ch 4 news tonight said that what is happening in Poland is the result of having a eurosceptic faction in their government that are similar to the ERG in the U.K. When anything happens we need to compare it to other historical events in the slim hope that lessons might be learned from it. Although it rarely seems to happen.

25Avalon, because Prexit and Brexit could be similar, that's why we are 'on' about it.
Now that we are free of the constraints of the EU, we can vote about how we treat our rivers. The vote tonight means that we can now discharge sewage into our rivers and water courses. The rotten old EU wouldn't let us do that before. Does that count as a Brexit Bonus?

I am not going to get embroiled in Brexit Maremia. It is just so boring on here with the same old, same old. Poland IMO will not be leaving the EU, but the EU does need to get them to toe the line. Britain would not toe the line and left. How is the EU going to get Poland to behave as a member state should? Will it be fines which they probably can’t afford to pay and won’t pay or sanctions?

Apparently Angela Merkel has urged EU leaders to drop threats against Poland amid fears that a rule-of-law battle could end in disaster.

An avalanche of lawsuits at the ECJ won’t fix it,” Mrs Merkel told reporters, as she arrived at the summit in Brussels.

“It’s the question of how the individual members envision the EU. Is it an ever closer union, or is it more about the nation state? And this is certainly not only an issue between Poland and the UE, but also in other member states,” she added. “We have to find ways of coming back together.”

EU leaders eventually agreed to an extended period of dialogue instead of moving to hit Warsaw with punitive sanctions.

One frustrated diplomat said: “It should be the other way around; intervention first, dialogue second.”

Well if we're were to get a debate we could spend it on the NHS to replace the mythical £350 million a week that never materialised.

There is a very good article in the Washington Post titled “EU debates withholding billions of euros from Poland as punishment for democratic backsliding” which gives all the background to the problems with the EU and Poland. The benefits or not of Brexit are absolutely nothing to do with which I wish posters would stop wittering on about, at least on this thread where it is a red herring. Poland is a much larger and very different issue where they are putting their own laws and justice system above the EU whilst still wanting to be a member state. They are anti abortion and anti LBGT+ amongst other things.

Maudi- that is beyond patronising! NO Brexit has NOT happened- we still don't know what it is ... even Johnson and Frost don't agree with the Brexit THEY negotatied, and THEY signed. So how are we supposed to know.

And NO, the Deal has not been fully implemented yet, and the consequences not fully known yet ...

And I am very happy, and I do make the best of the countryside, the sun and the moon and the amazing Indian Summer we are having and the magnificent colours. And I can still find time to continue to say Brexit was based on lies, fraud, and every single bit of 'project fear' has turned to be 'project reality' + many many more huge negative consequences many had not even thought about. Genetic engineering, GM crops, deals with far away places that will flood our market and destroy our own farmers, raw sewage poured into the sea all over the coast as we run out of chemicals for water treatment, shortages of staff and isotopes and soon other medicines for key life-saving treatment, massive rise in energy costs with companies in the hands of EU and other Foreign Companies we chose to sell them to, shortages of key workers in health, care, agriculture, HGV drivers and supply chains, abattoirs, butchers - and on and on.

SO DON'T PATRONISE !

Catholics in Poland have had their faith stamped on by Communism.and now have gone über religious and über Catholics as a reaction.

Whitewavemark2 - Oh please, the EU have been bending those conditions for countries both inside the EU and those wanting to join for decades! They are now reaping the fruits of their idiocy and I for one am going to sit back with my popcorn and enjoy the fallout. Do I care if they revoke our paltry trade agreement and we have to resort to WTA terms? No I do not - it is what we should have done from the outset, we cannot trust the EU to act in good faith about anything connected to Brexit. Short term pain for long term gain - no Northern Ireland protocal and NO foreign fishermen threatening blockades to get access to OUR fishing waters!

Good luck to the Poles - stand your ground and maybe the EU will be better for it, not holding my breath but they need to start somewhere. We were the first to jump off the sinking ship, we will not be the last. We are looking ahead to new partnerships in Asia and beyond - many with our own Commonwealth countries. We are already importing far less from the EU than before Brexit - long may it continue! The EU is the equivalent of a failed state - and its leaders know it!

Oh yeah and excuse me - I only read the first page or so of posts - so if someone has already said this, great, if you want to nitpick then please go and find someone who gives a crap!

Those that read the Withdrawl Agreement that the UK signed will know the EU has been remarkably consistent, you may believe it was a bad deal but we did sign it - and have been trying to wriggle out of it every since.
