Is this a humiliation for Glasgow? ?

Strikes by binmen, piles of rubbish (and rats) in the streets, road-blocking protests and hotel rooms priced at £1,400 a night set to cast shadow over UN Climate Change Conference which starts on 31 October. Maybe it’s a ‘trick’ for Halloween ?

GrannyGravy, we do and there is much to show off about!

*GrannyGravy*, we do and there is much to show off about!

We were due to visit in August, unfortunately had to cancel as our travelling companions tested positive for Covid. Hopefully rescheduling for 2022.

Lucca

Why shouldn’t Alegrias Elegran and others reply to the goady OP and defend their country ?

This is where you make a mistake Lucca ....it’s not about their country, it’s about the problems with a city.
Had the climate change meeting been in say, Birmingham and that city had rubbish piling up etc then nobody, even those who live there would have neither denied it/denied it was a problem/made overly combative comments/ treated it as an outrageous attack on England. Why would anybody do that....
Yet that is what has happened here.Even without Elegran’s crass comments about Southend it’s an eye opening thread with the comments from Scottish posters.

Go to the top of the page and read the OP - then come back and tell us that she was not being deliberately and childishly provocative.

Shame on us who took the time to defend for being taken in – I for one will just be ignoring anything UG says from now on.

Even poor lucca got it in the neck for her observations…

I’m left wondering if I’ve read the wrong thread tbh.

Blossoming Thu 21-Oct-21 18:20:10

Allegrias ‘twas ever thus. Hurty feels, though no malice intended.

Urmstingran I’ve quite enjoyed your thread, I’ve even got a GN meet-up to look forward to.

Marydoll Thu 21-Oct-21 18:22:20

Me too*Granniesunite*. I'm also trying to find the overly combative comments made by the Scots.

Granniesunite Thu 21-Oct-21 18:23:10

No need I’ve looked .Can’t find them.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 21-Oct-21 18:23:40

What Petera said. The OP was unnecessary and provocative.

Cherrytree59 Thu 21-Oct-21 18:25:03

As a Scot and Glasgow born, I would say that Glasgow is the most welcoming of cities.

It's people have a warm heart and will proudly welcome all it's visitors, as it has done for centuries.

Glasgow has held many large events; political, sporting and cultural.

Wheniwasyourage Thu 21-Oct-21 18:29:31

Hear hear, Cherrytree59. Some of my family living in Glasgow are having delegates to stay and are looking forward to the opportunity to do so, including the chance to use their languages!

Dearie me.

I'm guessing you don't know much about Glasgow and Red Clydeside. grin

Maybe they'll send the tanks into George Square again, after all protesters are just being selfish, aren't they?

Dearie, dearie me...
I have a feeling we've been over this "send the tanks into George Square again" rubbish before. It refers to the so-called "Battle of George Square" in 1919, when the tyrant Winston Churchill allegedly sent 10,000 'English' troops and tanks to massacre striking Scottish workers. Complete rubbish, of course. Incidentally, the only time a tank appeared in George Square around that time was in January 1918 - when it was supporting a Glasgow War Bond campaign - which raised £14 million for the war effort. And yet the same old myths keep getting trotted out...

Alegrias1 Thu 21-Oct-21 18:45:57

Who mentioned Winston Churchill?

Is that you Boris?

Partial rubbish. The six tanks never left the Cattle Market about a mile away from George Square.

If you call that getting it in the neck then you must be a newcomer, Granniesunite!

I thought I was polite (as usual)
?

Granniesunite Thu 21-Oct-21 20:17:30

I don’t post a lot Callistmon so I suppose you could say I’m a newcomer but yes I thought it was an unfair comment to make to Lucca. She was right to expressing her opinion and she was polite.

I’m delighted for you Blossoming. Great (unexpected) result!
Also glad you’ve had fun Marydoll.

Oh Petera it was in the newspapers for goodness’ sake. I read about it. It interested (and shocked) me. I started a thread. Big deal. I don’t expect any reply. You’re ignoring me. I’ll live.

She is and so am I. It was not unfair.

I was perfectly polite

Marydoll Thu 21-Oct-21 22:32:41

Urms, the binmen are not on strike yet, so why are you insisting they are?
I'm confused.
Which newspaper states this?

Zoejory Thu 21-Oct-21 22:40:15

Is it due to the fact that the refuse collectors come once every 3 weeks? This could be totally false. I thought I'd read it a while back somewhere

lemongrove Thu 21-Oct-21 22:45:43

Refuse collectors in Glasgow have confirmed their strike action during the COP26. It’s in the news.

Zoejory Thu 21-Oct-21 22:53:32

Oh yes, definitely striking. Google it, Marydoll. All media outlets are covering it.

Marydoll Thu 21-Oct-21 22:55:43

However, they are presently NOT on strike. Still waiting for accurate sources of information to confirm the location of all this uncollected refuse.
The OP implies that there is rubbish everywhere and a plague of rats. I live in Glasgow, no rats here. Should I be worried and take precautions?

I'm surprised posters haven't picked up on the fact that a number of educational establish near the SECC will be closed for the duration of the summit, as pupils will find it difficult to travel to school, due to traffic congestion. Now that has the makings of an interesting thread.

Alegrias1 Thu 21-Oct-21 22:56:39

Not striking at the moment. Given COSLA until Monday to improve their offer.

Since Marydoll actually lives in Glasgow, I expect she knows if her bins are being collected.
