Headline in the Daily Mail (I know) suggest that finally Brexit may be over ...

... and we can get on with life. Well the getting on with life bit may be difficult but their heading is:

The furious Red Wall Tory backlash that could kill off brigade of veteran Tory backbenchers who battled for Brexit dubbed The Spartans

It is being described in Westminster as 'the end of the Spartans' – the brigade of veteran Tory backbenchers who battled for Brexit and made Theresa May's life a misery but ended up dying on the hill of Owen Paterson's business interests.

Apparently "those close to Downing Street" think this will push through changes at No 10.

Callistemon was silly enough to walk across someone’s line of sight, so was therefore an easy target.

FannyCornforth Mon 08-Nov-21 08:22:46

What do you read Hetty?
How do you choose to hear about current affairs?
To be honest, I tend to only read the rubbishy show business, ‘women’s interest’ stuff in the DM
(shoot me now!)
But MrC reads it, and The Times, from cover to cover.
I tend to get my news-news from Radio 4 and LBC

Actually Lincslass most of us do know the daily headlines from the papers, because every day there’s a feature on BBC news online showing them, and you can read the front page of all the main newspapers as well as a summary of them. It’s a good way of keeping up with the media view whether or not you read a specific newspaper.

Spot on. My bloke reads those often to see the hilarious ones on the daily Sport or whatever.

Hetty58 Mon 08-Nov-21 08:10:14

FannyCornforth, I just don't see the DM as a 'newspaper' at all. A comic perhaps? Certainly a laugh.

You couldn’t make it up! gringrin.

Yes, the old ‘Mail Online Defence’! grin

I’m clearly extra thick this morning but why is Callistemon getting the flak ??

Me too confused
I’m thinking that it could be that posters are assuming that the link which Callistemon posted included a load of, shall we say, unpopular, headlines or something.
It is actually a full archive, and looks like it come be a valuable tool for students say.

To assume that the DM is poor journalism is just wrong

Well it’s happened despite Covid, we’ve got to make it work.
More concerned at the moment about this Patterson debacle. It’s disgusting trying to change the rules after a crime has been committed, shameful. However Keir going off on one after his loose cannon Angela performance is a bit rich. They have had a lot to be ashamed of.

growstuff Mon 08-Nov-21 07:35:20

Calistemon knows what the headlines are because she's presumably read the link she posted, which has links to all the headlines from the last few years.

Don’t believe everything you read in the Daily Fail. I only read it online to get another view of the world. An extreme right wing, borderline racist, insidious view. Don’t forget they supported Fascism in the 1930s.

The Guardian supported slavery, many in the past can be associated with evil things. Doesn’t mean they support it now.

If you buy a paper that supports certain views NOW, it it most likely that you support those views NOW. Look at the headlines of the DM over the last few years, and see.

Patronising, judgemental and out of order. How dare you judge me, you don’t know me. Thank goodness I don’t know you. . Looking at other posts where you are judgemental about what anyone says if they don’t agree with your views.
Anyway how do you know what the headlines of the Mail are, if you don’t read it.??? You certainly know more than myself that’s for sure.

What an odd post LadyF.
I am with fc I read what I fancy when I go to the store, be it the DM, the DE, and sometimes what is left on the shelf. I take most of it with a pinch of salt anyway but I enjoy reading.

We will all disappear into the pit of history PippaZ.....even everyone on this thread.

I always enjoy the reasons people give for reading the Daily Mail.

Why? What do you mean?
Do you take a paper?
Some people like reading a daily newspaper, it doesn’t mean that you are a party member for heavens sake

PippaZ Sun 07-Nov-21 16:17:03

The Daily Mail might change its tune but sadly there is no end to brexit.

The damage is irreparable.

I understand what you are saying varian but I do think there is an end to the bonfire that was Brexit. Now and forever we will be dealing with the aftermath, I agree.

However the Brexiteers and, I would guess, those who identified as leavers will disappear into the pit of History while others, with better motives, pick up the pieces.

kittylester Sun 07-Nov-21 16:13:18

Because, pippa it is difficult to think that anyone would be non-judgmental enough to take on board a different point of view when they start a thread like that or pass comments like those later on in the thread. Simple really.

Calistemon Sun 07-Nov-21 15:52:26

This wasn't intended to be a thread about the DM. I wonder why many of you are actually avoiding what it said?
It doesn't make sense to me

So not only has the government has misread the public over the recent vote in parliament, Johnso has also got it wrong elsewhere. In research exclusive to the European Movement, Britons overwhelmingly backed banning food that doesn’t meet British standards. More that people didn't know they would be told to put up with when we left the EU.

But it is very interesting to see the DM's reaction to the recent Paterson debacle- and that their are finally a-turning against ERG. We can but hope ...

As said before, when it happens, it will be very fast and furious.

You have been saying the ‘very fast’ remark about the political demise of Johnson virtually ever since he came to power.
Only you has ever said it btw.

The very fast applies to when it finally happens ...

lemongrove Sun 07-Nov-21 12:54:51

Sleaze such as cash for questions in the HOC has always greatly annoyed the British people, as has MP’s on all sides taking up every perk going and falsifying accounts/ receipts.
The fact that those in power never really ‘get this’ speaks volumes.
Add to that the entirely unworthy ( again from all sides) promotion to the HOL.
As to Brexit, I ( amongst many) think it’s a worthwhile enterprise but was always going to take time adjusting and prospering. If something is worth doing you can’t expect instant results.
The DM doesn’t know any more than any other media outlet, not that it stops any of them from wishful (or negative) headlines.
