Day 16 I think. That man is so brave.

Urmstongran Tue 09-Nov-21 08:50:38

Do we know the backstory of the man in this photo?

JenniferEccles Tue 09-Nov-21 08:54:40

I think it’s Nazanin’s husband.
He’s on his second hunger strike in an attempt to get his wife released.
Brave he might be but I don’t think the Iranian regime will take any notice whatsoever

silverlining48 Tue 09-Nov-21 08:55:23

It is Nazamin Radcliffe husband

silverlining48 Tue 09-Nov-21 08:57:19

Perhaps if we discuss the millions we owe Iran might be a start

Calmlocket Tue 09-Nov-21 08:57:20

Its coming across that theres more to this story than what we are being told!

Kali2 Tue 09-Nov-21 08:57:32

Oh Usg !

Kali2 Tue 09-Nov-21 08:59:03

It's OUR Government that has to take notice, and do something. They have not sent a single envoy since Johnson came in power and have made NO attempts to find a solution, including paying debts we owe.

eazybee Tue 09-Nov-21 09:01:47

He is Richard Ratcliffe, husband of Nazanin Zahari-Ratcliffe
Sadly, there is nothing this Prime minister or any other can do as she is a national of Iran by birth and their laws prevail in their country.

Urmstongran Tue 09-Nov-21 09:04:33

Why the ‘Usg’? That was unnecessary surely? I’ve spent my spare time reading my book club choice I’ve hardly read the papers. It was a genuine question.

We owe Iran millions on a deal which I think we reneged on. By whom? I can’t remember. Was it Cameron & Clegg or Blair? Why aren’t we paying it? Do we fear it will go towards nuclear capability?

Chestnut Tue 09-Nov-21 09:08:06

Much as I sympathise, I don't feel hunger striking is a good idea. He has a young daughter and the last thing he wants is to make himself ill and unable to care for her when his wife is in that awful situation and needing his support.

Urmstongran Tue 09-Nov-21 09:08:58

How mean of Iran then doing this to one of their own citizens. Have they no compassion? Maybe Mr. Ratcliffe would be better demonstrating at the doors of the Iranian Embassy in London. It’s all heartbreaking. It’s gone on for years now.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Nov-21 09:13:46

Johnson also managed through his ignorance or thoughtlessness about Zaghari-Radcliffe’s stay in Iran, ensured that the Iranian courts condemned her as being engaged in propaganda against the regime. She has been forcibly detained in Iran ever since and Johnson appears to have forgotten her existence.

Umg, this poor man has been in the papers and on the news for years now- so I am beyond surprised you needed to ask the question, really.

eazybeem this Governement can try to help- by at least sending envoys to discuss this. They do no, because they refuse to discuss the debts they clearly owe!

Unnecessary. I didn’t make the connection either.

Jaxjacky Tue 09-Nov-21 09:26:07

According to this there is some action going on.

I am sorry, I clearly should have been clearer as to who the chap is, but I honestly thought everyone would know!

My goodness how quickly people forget!

Urmstongran Tue 09-Nov-21 09:27:19

He is a man in a woolly hat. Only his face showing & the poster he was holding gave no clue as to his grievance.

Yes I know about the history. It’s been discussed on here often too. There was a really long thread on it at one time. However showing me this photo, out of context, when I hadn’t picked up a newspaper just threw me.

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Nov-21 09:27:32

I've always thought that Richard Radcliffe has shown remarkable dignity in this whole sad affair and has shown up all the government's inaction over the last five (?) years. That he feels he has to go on hunger strike again just to get focus back on this case just shows me how desparate thei situation is.

People don't go on hunger strike outside Downing Street for frivolous reasons, and saying he should do it outside the Iran embassy is missing the point spectacularly. Especially as he has already done that, in 2019. As for suggesting that he is in some way neglecting his daughter, I am actually lost for words.

Alegrias1 Tue 09-Nov-21 09:27:58

desperate the situation is.

Urmstongran Tue 09-Nov-21 09:28:39

Thank you Lucca and WW!

Whitewavemark2 Tue 09-Nov-21 09:29:15

And she is a U.K. citizen just to make it clear

Urmstongran Tue 09-Nov-21 09:32:01

At least being outside the Iranian Embassy again might embarrass their officials. They are the only ones who can release their citizen. Seems we are pretty powerless unless we stump up.

Why aren’t we doing so?
That seems to the nub of the question here.

eazybee Tue 09-Nov-21 09:37:51

Both the British and the Iranian Foreign Offices have been in discussion about Nazarin Ratcliffe's imprisonment for a long time and her imprisonment would have been far worse if they had not. Both Britain and Iran deny that the dispute concerning money supposedly owed to Iran is the cause of her imprisonment; she was accused of working to train journalists for an illegal Persian broadcast service.

The debt dates back to 1971 when the Shah of Persia ordered military equipment from Britain, part of which was delivered. Following the fall of the Shah the usurping Iranian regime claimed the money; the amount has been paid into the Court Funds Office and awaits a court judgement, as concerns were raised then and now about the use it would be put to by Iran.

Confirmed by Johnson?. What a bloody fool he is.
