As the OP states, we have left the EU. lemongrove Fri 12-Nov-21 16:23:41
I did, didn't I? But that didn't stop you from raising the old arguments to attack personally, those whose opinions don't agree with yours. Nothing changes, does it? Let's think of the future again, and this time look at the Conservative Party. For decades it was said that the Conservative Party was divided by Brexit. The answer, part of the party said, was to "just get out". Well, that has worked, hasn't it?
However, they seem to have moved to a different area of division. It seems there is a split between the young and the old Tory MPs. I am not referring specifically to age, more how long they have been in Parliament.
It has been noticeable that, true to form, the need to earn more than an MP's salary is rife in the Tories. Once again, it has tipped into sleaze. Mark Fletcher, one of the new Red Wall members, stood up in Parliament and said that he had no problem voting against the whip. He also pointed out that some of the older Tory members consider the 2019 intake inexperienced and naive. That comment came out of what seems to be a split between the two groups. The new members were in a bit of a daze when they first won their seats. Let's face it, they probably weren't expecting to be in Parliament. Fletcher then commented that two years is enough time to learn the difference between right and wrong.
This may be what divides the two halves for some time while sleaze and the investigation of it take hold. Many of the more experienced MPs are the ones deep in the poo re sleaze or besties with someone else who is. The younger, newer element will not be happy with the effect constant media concentration on sleaze has on their chances of keeping very difficult seats at the next election.
I think we may be living in interesting times.

Brexit is dead, it is no more, it has ceased to be - because it has happened. We have withdrawn from the European Union
(280 Posts)The next bit will be how you vote in the next election. We will have two choices on the ballot paper - however many names are there. You can vote for the Conservative continuity of anti-democratic, anti-Europe government or the candidate best placed to stop them and who offer, as Labour has already stated, that they would seek a "closer alliance with the EU".
If you do not vote for that best-placed candidate, you will be voting for a move further away from our European neighbours and further away from democracy.
Will leave you to it kali.....

I think it’s the friends of Corbyn that may side with Putin btw.
How am I making things up? THIS is what you wrote, above.
Which is utter 100% bollocks nonsense!
You are making up ridiculous things kali .....friends of Corbyn are all the extreme left wing of the LP such as Momentum supporters. They may well rather like things that come out of Russia.
Don’t forget that Corbyn and friends were no supporters of the EU..... for different reasons to most people.
Oh stop it- you said friends of Corbyn may side with Putin!

But current Russia is NOT Marxist!!!
Talking about differences of opinions earlier on, and tolerance.
But when you come up with absolute nonsense like that - what on earth is one supposed to do.
If you say the earth is flat, that is not really a matter of 'opinion' we can discuss. It is just - utter nonsense! Sorry, but ...
Who says that Russia is Marxist?
I said that Corbyn is an old Marxist.
Nobody was ‘mislead’ and if they were too stupid to do any thinking for themselves then I don’t have any sympathy for them either.
“This deal falls very far short of the commitments and promises that were made to the fishing industry by those at the highest level of government."

I didn't think everyone would be. That wasn't my point. Am I sympathetic ?. I am sorry the fisherman was misled and happy he has seen that he was. What worries me is he still doesn't bother to find out the implications of what he suggests.
Nobody was ‘mislead’ and if they were too stupid to do any thinking for themselves then I don’t have any sympathy for them either.People had to decide on which way they would vote and then go for it.MP’s on both sides over inflated their claims as MP’s always do.
There were people who voted to leave and people who voted to stay in the EU who didn’t think much at all. There were others on both sides who thought about it a lot. There were people who voted each way from all political parties.
This constant demonising of those who voted to leave is not only idiotic but pointless. As the OP states, we have left the EU.

I didn’t know Corbyn was responsible for that …
He was the only one in Parliament making excuses for Russia and stood out like a sore thumb at the time. He’s an old Marxist and habits die hard.
MaizieD ....and here’s me thinking that it’s you who would like to return to the 1940’s/50’s and the Labour Party as it was then.
Yes, he is! Somebody should tell MaizieD that.
Just trying to make you feel comfortable with your evident wish to live in the mid 20th C, lemon.

This comment a vast amount of total ignorance or current Russia- and is beyond incomprehensible!

No I think it is the friends of Donald Trump, friends of Marine le Pen and most of all friends of brexit who have been manipulated by Putin.
Russia is no longer the USSR and Putin is not a left wing politician. He is a right wing autocrat.

Very far from the LP today although Corbyn and likeminded friends have always been reluctant to diss either him or anything about Russia.Remember the Salisbury poisonings?

Interesting.
Does the cap fit? I didn’t mention ‘anyone on here’.

PippaZ I have read what the fisherman said but I am not 100% sympathetic since he and many of his colleagues did vote for Brexit.

The doom laden predictions continue apace on the forum
Monica but fortunately only by the few ( even if there are many posts.)
‘Struggling to put food on the table’ seems to be a buzz phrase now, along with ‘hardworking families’ ......as if lack of cash is something new.
Rising gas prices along with economies shattered by Covid in every country will make food prices rise, but the UK will not starve.
Most of us on here have lived long lives and can remember far worse periods than this ( rising prices.)One reason that the UK as a whole won't starve is because Johnson has not put tariffs on food imports to try to ensure that there is sufficient food and not higher prices.
Exactly Dinahmo. But if you obviously didn't read what the poor fisherman had to say. Although he wishes he had not voted to leave he wants tariffs. He thinks the EU and the UK are two equals trade bodies playing tit for tat. He doesn't realise what tariffs would do to the cost of our food.

I think that lemon is so far enamoured of the past that she hasn't managed to let go of the notion that the LP is run by the Soviet Union...
Certainly not noticed that it is Russians who give big donations to the tory party and who had a big hand in the vote to leave the EU.
PippaZ I don't always agree with what you say, but I can see that you say it with conviction and that you don't deserve to be ridiculed because of it.
No doubt someone will come along and say it wasn't ridicule, it was "opinion", but please be aware that people with a passion for something will always be heard over those who think its all a big joke or a waste of time.
Keep going ?

Strangely, I don't even remember being affected by the Winter of Discontent. I was a student at the time, so maybe I was used to "making do". As I wasn't affected, does that mean it didn't happen and I was an "I'm alright Jill"?
It was the 3 day week introduced by Heath that resulted in power cuts. I was working at an antiquarian book seller at that time and remember working by candlelight when the power was cut off. 4 hours on and 4 hours off but I could be wrong about the period length. I also remember we used to buy whisky to drink with our coffee to keep us warm.
People often confuse the 3 day week with the winter of discontent., thinking that the LP was responsible for both. They were in power just for the latter.
