Lalu Hanuman, of the 13th June 1980 Movement, said: “A lot of people don’t realise the linkages between the Royal Family and slavery. Their hands are mired in it. And a substantial amount of their wealth came from it.”

“Kensington Palace was directly built off of the slave trade by King William III. Before that Elizabeth I granted a royal charter to Sir John Hawkins and provided him with ships for the slave trade. She also gave him his own coat of arms, which depicted a chained African person.”

The slave trade resulted in 12million African people being snatched from their countries. Five million were taken to the Caribbean, including 600,000 to Barbados. And their deaths ran into the millions.

After the vile trade was abolished in 1833, ex-slave owners, including relatives of the royals, were compensated. But the slaves got nothing.

I didn't know that. Disgusting.

Sorry, devisive!

paddyann54 Tue 30-Nov-21 14:17:38

Jabberwok is this the same Chian the tories were giving contracts to,to build nuclear power station on the south coast?
Of course thats different when its ENGLISH MP's making those decisions ,wht you and they need to understand is the thay other countries are perfectly capable of making decisions for themselves

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 14:44:18

Don't dictate to me what I should or shouldn't understand. Matters of trade which this power station comes under are totally different to matters of constitution as well you know. I imagine that you in Scotland expect the decision of independence to be courtesy of a referendum and not the whim of government. Hopefully it will happen asap and many of us in England will, with a sigh of relief be free from Scotland's everlasting whinging.

Alegrias1 Tue 30-Nov-21 14:47:25

I'm hoping for UDI.

Jabberwok Tue 30-Nov-21 14:48:39

Hinckley Point was actually a contract between China,David Cameron and the major share holder EDF, which is,for claritys sake French.

His Catholic enemies said he was homosexual, it is by no means certain. To my Orange family in Northern Ireland he will forever be King Billy, revered by the protestants.^

I was born a protestant in NI. I don't revere him. Nor do any of my friends.
It's not the queen's fault that Kensington palace was funded from slavery but the RF still live in it. Would you live in a house built on slavery?

theworriedwell Thu 02-Dec-21 11:46:45

I didn't say all protestants in Northern Ireland revered him. The extremist members of the Orange Order do. As a Catholic I was exposed to all their extreme views as a child.

My husband and my children are descended from slaves, we go to places built on slavery, hospitals, museums etc. Do you think they should all be demolished?

nadateturbe Thu 02-Dec-21 11:55:46

No. I think the RF could give back illgotten gains.

Not a fan of the Orange Order either.

theworriedwell Fri 03-Dec-21 19:25:38

I think if we are going to reclaim the proceeds of slavery it should go further than the RF.

'When Queen goes, let's become a republic and consign backbiting Windsors to history'
Brian Reade marks Barbados becoming a republic by musing that it's time for Great Britain to follow suit when the Queen passes away

We will never become a republic while Queen Elizabeth II is still alive.

I hope she lives for many more years, at least as long as her mother did, to allow us time to decide what should happen next.

www.smh.com.au/national/no-sense-of-momentum-poll-finds-drop-in-support-for-australia-becoming-a-republic-20210125-p56wpe.html

Unless there is a referendum then we d9nt really know.
Voting is compulsory in Australia too.

Raising hands Most Australians also agree that the time has come to move on from the British Monarchy. The most recent YouGov poll found 62% of Australians would vote to become a republic. #AusPol #AusRepublic

Was this a postal poll as most people have been at home, some locked down, Grany.

Alegrias1 Mon 06-Dec-21 15:32:10

I hear they have the internet in Australia now.

Lincslass Mon 06-Dec-21 19:13:54

Was really unsure as to why the Commonwealth exists, self interest maybe, on reading this was more aware. www.theafricareport.com/71058/the-commonwealth-why-does-it-exist-and-does-it-help-its-members/

I hear they have the internet in Australia now.

Not random then.

Let's pick people with non-British surnames who have no links go the auld country!

Alegrias1 Mon 06-Dec-21 19:41:01

Maybe they could have chosen people with indigenous names? You know, the ones who lived there for 50,000 years before we told them to b****r off?

Calistemon Mon 06-Dec-21 19:48:52

Maybe they could have chosen people with indigenous names?

I'll ask the ones I know.

Certainly a huge disparity in just a few months.

Perhaps the next one in a couple of months will be different again.
