You Couldn’t Make It Up

I sometimes think we need a “You couldn’t make it up” forum.
But in its absence - how about this from the department of stating the bl**ding obvious at a well- known and respected university

Students warned over kidnap scene in ‘Kidnapped’
Trigger warnings have been added to classic novels by the University of Aberdeen, including a warning for students that Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped  involves an abduction
Several Shakespearean texts are among those to have been flagged, as well as two Jane Austen novels and a number of other classics. A trigger warning is a statement that is made before sharing potentially disturbing content
The university, whose alumni include broadcaster Nicky Campbell and Tessa Jowell MP, has told students that Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, presents “sexist attitudes” and its plot centres on a murder A warning about Charles Dickens’s 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities states that it “contains scenes of violence, execution and death
Perhaps their English department could advise on definitions of “kidnap” and “abduction” and how “execution” might have something to do with “death”.
Oh and maybe the History department could lay in copies of the Ladybird Guide to the French Revolution.
But perhaps I am being picky. hmmhmm

We’re ‘educating’ a generation of people not ready for the real world. Some years ago I worked at a university and one of my tasks was photocopying bus timetables for students who were helping out at local schools. I had a 13 & 14 year old at home who knew how to phone bus line/navigate time timetables to get around but the so called most intelligent cohort of 19/20 year olds couldn’t get to grips with it and needed molly coddling all the way

This is what I've been saying all along. Unless we have a context for any of this it is meaningless. A bit like the story about being fined £5000 for wearing a Christmas jumper, without the full facts people who just believe the headline could end up with egg on their faces.

Some people on here are so gullible they believe everything they read / hear on Facebook without a question. There is also such a lack of empathy or sensitivity concerning genuine issues some may have. You may have all grown up with Enid Blyton but kids these days are exposed to so much explicit and dangerous material that surely we should be made aware of this?

Edith81, what I remember Mary Whitehouse complaining about was child abuse and 'snuff porn'.

In Scotland people are classed as adults at several different ages, depending on the context, but for most things it is 16. It is definitely NOT the case that they have to wait until 25 to vote, have sex, sign contracts, get married, fight and die in the armed forces, etc etc etc

Pantglas2. People in Scotland are 24 before classed as adults, up till then they are considered to be unable to understand consequences of their actions. Unbelievable I know. So, understandably Uni's need to forewarn the little cherubs that some nasty things happen in real life. How students cope with drunken parties, drug taking, they're should have escorts everytime they go out in anyone speaks to them!

That was just draft guidelines on the choice of sentencing by judges, 4allweknow, based on research showing that the brain does not reach full maturity until 25 or 30. the full range of sentencing was to remain available to judges, but a custodial sentence should only be imposed on a young person if the judge was satisfied that no other sentence was appropriate.
I can't at the moment find any facts on whether the draft was accepted, but I would have thought that all judges would already have considered the age and apparent maturity of an offender, and the appropriateness of prison among hardened criminals when sentencing them.

Who remembers when Mary Whitehouse complained about the violence in the Tom and Jerry cartoons???

effalump Tue 30-Nov-21 12:37:52

I recently got a streaming stick so I could watch films instead of forever buying dvds. I was shocked at how many of them seem very dystopian or violent. It's as if we've been on a continuous drip feed for years in order for it to feel 'normal'. I've always thought that the increase in violence between young people (I'm talking under the age of 18) is a result of them playing 'shoot em up' type computer games in which you kill someone and the next time you start the game, they are alive again.

In the name o' the wee man.... ??

I think that the "woke" police are running out of ideas, like the storm at the weekend it will all blow over and something else will come along and be fashionable for a while. At least they are leaving the buildings and statues alone for a bit.

All I can say is FFS. Most of you will know what that stands for.

The PC tentacles are spreading ...

“EU Commission bans gendered words and 'Christmas' in 'woke' communication guide.
The European Commission has published an 'inclusive' guidebook banning terms like 'man-made' and 'ladies and gentlemen' in official publications”

Not just trigger warnings now. Daily life as we’ve known it is coming to an end. We’ll be castigated for saying anything much soon. Knitting & recipes anyone?

Except that in this case you (or more precisely the Getalarph) are making it up.

It follows that so many books should have warnings then - ?
Romeo and Juliet- endless problems and they study this in y6

TerriBull Tue 30-Nov-21 11:51:01

Heavens above! schooled in the catholic religion from an early age, we children were well aware of the crucifixion and other excruciatingly painful deaths.! I must admit in retrospect some trigger warnings wouldn't have gone amiss, better still don't tell young children about horrible deaths they are the stuff of nightmares. I reached the conclusion at an early age, when having some death recounted in our RE classes of a catholic martyr , my thoughts were "oh just say I'll become a protestant, nothing is worth this" obviously my faith was lacking even way back then. Much later on one of my children aged about 5 or 6 described the crucifixion as rather unpleasant for Jesus shock but then he went to a CE school and I think they rather soft peddled on much of the gore that I and my peers were subjected to.

So yes with all that in mind, I think an 18 year old should be able to cope with say "Kidnapped" without feeling too traumatised!

Theoddbird Tue 30-Nov-21 11:49:10

Can someone please tell me what is in the Jane Austin books please? I am about to start listening on Audible to plays from the books. I don't want to be scared...hahaha

harrigran Tue 30-Nov-21 11:47:52

In future offers of a place at university will arrive with an industrial size pack of cotton wool to wrap the student in.
Whatever next ?

Joesoap Tue 30-Nov-21 11:44:04

Oh dear, how have we survived without warnings.

LauraNorderr Tue 30-Nov-21 11:43:27

Warning on Christmas crackers - may make sudden loud noise.
Same warning on granny after too many sprouts

Grantanow Tue 30-Nov-21 11:40:58

Universities don't really think students need forewarning about texts - it's that they fear litigation or tribunals and so take avoiding action. Lack of resilience will be the result, unfortunately.

What would they say about The Taming of the Shrew I wonder?

At the risk of breaking the habits of a lifetime and being serious, it might be a useful vehicle for studying historical attitudes to women, to authority and to the mores of past generations.
Surely somebody by now has directed a gender-bending version of the play?
