No 10 was breaking Christmas Lockdown rules last year.

While most of the UK was observing the Lockdown rules last Christmas staff at No. 10 were having a great time...

When asked three times at PMQs yesterday to deny the story Johnson refused to do so. Because, it seems, even he couldn't take his habitual lying that far.

All that an official Downing Street spokesman could come up with was that 'covid rules were observed at all times... No denial. hmm

This is only the latest in the steady stream of high profile lockdown breaking stories we've heard over the past 18 months.

Some very sad stories on this thread from people who weren't able to see dying relatives because of the rules.

With the possibility that the spread of the Omicron variant may call for more stringent rules just before Christmas this year these revelations may well lead people not to observe them.

While I realise that we will never get rid of this virus how can we even begin to reduce its spread when those who are supposed to being giving a lead by showing a good example flout the rules?

I should add that I'm hmm as to why this story has only broken now.

Well I'm appalled. When people in authority misbehave or break the rules they are usually punished. Things under covid were made offences for the rest of us. But not for those who made the rules. Bit like the woman who said "only little people pay taxes". It's disgusting that people can even say they don't care!!! Wait til it wipes out your parents and partner and then say "who cares I don't give a scoobies". Selfish is what I call it.

That woman's tone. Good grief. Just dreadful. I assume she'll be out of a job soon. And the way it's going the government will be following suit.

I’m still awaiting a reply to my letter to my MP asking her if she can categorically deny that the party didn’t happen. It’ll be interesting if her reply is that no rules were broken given that it will have been sent before todays revelations.

Callous arrogance.

... which will be defended by some.

I see it more as contempt for the general public for whom the rules were made. It's a sign of the complete indifference to the lives of ordinary people.

To be callous - you have to care enough to want to commit an act of spite and I think these individuals are fairly apathetic or uninterested in the views or feelings of the electorate. It's all much of a joke to them. Hence the amusement at breaking the rules.

Utterley sick. To know that many people were kept from seeing their loved ones for the very last time, not allowed to attend their funeral, missed seeing their babies being born. the list is endless. My thoughts? I am beginning to think 'they' have always known this virus was never as dangerous as they told us it was. Hence, they have kept doing whatever they like. They knew there was no real fear, certainly to healthy people.

Unfortunately, healthy young people were hospitalised with severe complications from the virus - too many of them. And I think the government understood that if the disease was allowed to run rampant (herd immunity), that number would only increase, overwhelming the NHS.

I don't want to side track this discussion and make it about the virus itself, but the fact is that sometimes, it's the individual's own reaction to it that causes the problems. Which is why you can get a a situation where an elderly person in poor health survives the virus whilst a young healthy person with no underlying condition, dies from it.

Footage of Mogg emerged addressing a Christmas party joking about whether “this party will be investigated in a years time”

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Dec-21 02:01:13

I hope she reminds Johnson that most people obey the rules.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Dec-21 02:06:20

I have hope now that the party is now indeed over.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Dec-21 02:18:00

The longer Kuenssberg and Peston stay silent about whether they attended the party, the more likely we are to conclude that they were indeed there.

A denial would put pay to all the rumours.

growstuff Wed 08-Dec-21 02:20:02

I've never seen anything like it!

I’ve never watched Ant and Dec, but I think the programme gets big audiences. They must be sure of their viewers.

shock
I've always thought ant and dec to be pretty mundane and vanilla!!
Not tonight, obviously.

Quite honestly, they're small fry. If Kuenssberg really was there, she really does have some cheek to be reporting about it as she is.

MissAdventure Wed 08-Dec-21 02:48:09

All we need now is a leaked video taken at the party.
Perhaps all of them doing the Macarena.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Dec-21 03:05:09

I think really the bigger point is that how on earth can Johnson or indeed any minister now stand in front of the nation and tell it to stick to any rules?

What about people who were given big fines for doing something less, like students having an in-house get together.

It is scandalous.

MayBee70 Wed 08-Dec-21 03:26:05

Can’t help but feel that this is the Conservatives way of getting rid of Johnson so that they can reinvent themselves before the next election? If not, who is pulling the strings here? Has Murdoch decided he wants a Labour government? Who or what is behind all this? Or is it all so corrupt now it can’t sustain itself?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Dec-21 03:32:12

There will be a growing number of Tories wanting shot of him, but I think the big issue they have is who to replace him with.

The entire government is tainted by association over a number of years and who we know stood up and defended the constant lying, cronyism and corruption.

I also think that the rot of corruption has spread from the core now and will not be sustainable.

Josianne Wed 08-Dec-21 04:06:56

Utterly disillusioned and disgusted.
As someone who knows little about politics, I think we have spent far too much time and effort concentrating on Boris himself and not on the wider corruption of the party as a whole. His bombastic rhetoric and blustering behaviour have masked the callous arrogance of the entire bunch for far too long. Maybe it was intentional to use him in exactly that way?
Those who know more about filthy games in politics may disagree with my analysis, but you have to acknowledge that a large number of the electorate do not have the inclination to look below the surface. A larger than life figure like Boris can cleverly cover up a multitude of sins, but now everything has been laid bare I find the whole lying lot utterly repulsive.

growstuff Wed 08-Dec-21 04:37:20

I don't know who the "we" in your post are, but I know I've been going on about wider corruption and the sinister undermining of democracy and parliamentary processes for months. Maybe some people are now listening, although I suspect many will still not look below the surface.

Silk purse makers desperately wanted! Apply Conservative Party HQ.

He is already there Growstuff sitting right next to Johnson. Not that I am a betting person but if there is a change of leadership it will be Rishi Sunak

Hmmm! Not so sure about that after the revelations about fraudulent support, which weren't checked adequately.

I don't think Sunak has enough political experience to do a good job. In any case, a whole new cabinet is needed.

growstuff Wed 08-Dec-21 06:20:03

My money would be on Hunt or Truss.

vegansrock Wed 08-Dec-21 06:29:05

Allegra Stratton should at least lose her job. She is inept flailing about like that- so unprofessional! Also laughing about breaking the law when you work for the government and holding the public in contempt, is unforgivable.
Trouble is, where are all the honest decent tories? Or did Johnson get rid of all of them?
