What will happen to the number of Covid cases in the Northern counties of England, if Scots do not respond to a request from M/S Sturgeon not to cross to England to celebrate Hogmanay?

According to todays paper
DUTCH day-trippers are fleeing the coronavirus lockdown in the Netherlands in their droves to cross the border to Belgium, where shops and restaurants remain open
Crowds at Antwerp Central station yesterday, many visiting from the Netherlands
Hugo de Jonge, the Dutch health minister, yesterday pleaded with people not to go to Belgium after cities near the border, such as Antwerp, witnessed jammed parking lots, traffic jams and overcrowded trains.
The Netherlands announced a strict Christmas lockdown to try and halt the fast-spreading omicron variant

Could this be Edinburgh Waverley or indeed Riccarton junction?

Pubs aren't closed in Scotland.

Mollygo Thu 30-Dec-21 10:06:26

I listened to a discussion on this on the way to work. A man who has a pub/restaurant near the border was far more annoyed that English pub owners would be making money out of Scots border crossers than he was worried about the transmission of the virus. He thought Scotland shouldn’t be closed, because law abiding people like him would lose out to off-licences and supermarkets and even the occasional less law abiding pubs.

According to theZOE map, apart from Dumfries and Galloway, either side of the border seems as infectious as the other. Those that will will, sure it won’t be many. Not the only country going from one to the other, as all closed in Netherlands, they went over to Germany, doesn’t matter where you are in the world, the I’ll do what I like attitude persists.

People will do what they will, and I don't really care where they go if they want to get a skinful. It's up to others to keep away from them if they feel they might have been infected through too much socialising.

I think you may find OP, this would not be the first instance guidelines have been broken within the UK and NI as other nations paid no heed when deciding to visit nations regardless of the tighter guidelines elsewhere during this pandemic.

It is a sad reality of selfish individuals who put their wants before the safety of others, throughout the UK and NI, not just one country.

A selective memory indeed OP.

I don’t know, I might get too bored/board !

If nothing else, I think we have now established the difference between a boarder and a border.smile

Just call it a frontier MayBeMaw organise a few games and have a knockout.

I know quite a few Scotsmen around here, both sides of the border but all will be staying in celebrating quietly with their OHs.

Casdon Wed 29-Dec-21 22:17:02

Our hymns and arias might make the Scottish boarders even more cross Calistemon - it’s okay though as if they reject us we will always have Ross on Wye (or Monmouth) to retreat to, they will keep a welcome in the hillsides…..

Oh yes, it's infectious

And NHS staff in ICU are falling sick. So where will the party goers be in a week’s time?

Exactly that is why M/S Sturgeon asked them not to go into Northumberland and Cumbria it's a big risk for others just for a skin full.

lemsip Wed 29-Dec-21 22:09:42

border even.

Calistemon Wed 29-Dec-21 22:07:09

I know a few good pubs just across the boarder, Casdon
One might hold a lock-in on Friday!

Casdon Wed 29-Dec-21 22:04:29

You take the high road and I’ll take the low road Calistemon!

Alegrias1 Wed 29-Dec-21 21:58:30

Hope there will be no invaders ( white walkers)getting past the wall....where are the Watch when you need them?

All patrolling Offa's Dyke stopping the Welsh visiting English country village pubs.

Elegran Wed 29-Dec-21 21:48:03

It is OK, Yammy If no-one in the northern counties is out in the pubs or on the streets celebrating the New Year, but they are all indoors with a mug of cocoa having an early night like the sober sensible citizens we know they all are, there will be no-one for the hordes of marauding Scots to share their CoVid-tainted whisky bottles with, so you will be quite safe.

If they take in boarders, they will just have to confiscate all alcohol at the door.

Galaxy Wed 29-Dec-21 21:43:35

Crikey are we all from the North, who knew? I'm in county Durham now but previously was in Northumberland. I am not sure that the Scots will cope with our no coat, (or any other clothes to speak of) clubbing regime but they are welcome to try it.

Woodmouse Wed 29-Dec-21 21:38:56

For Pete's sake! I live on the boarder with Scotland and went shopping there yesterday. What difference will crossing from one to the other really make? Talk about creating resentment and division.
