Although I don't approve of the whole honours thing, I am pleased to see he has been recognised.

Can't think (well, I can, but...) of anyone more deserving. Great man. Great service to our country.

I don’t agree with the honours system at all, but if anyone deserves it, Chris Whitty is the person.
(I hope all those who lost a son/daughter in Iraq or Afghanistan are happy about Tony Blair getting an honour!)

I agree maddy

I’m hoping that he will stand as a Labour MP at the next election.

And If retired speakers all get one so should he .

Oh please not the weasely John Bercow ?
That must have been said in jest surely?
He was the most awful Speaker, not impartial at all as he obviously tried every trick in the book to thwart Brexit and was quite blatantly pro Labour.

I don’t agree. I thought he was the best Speaker for years. Everything he did to reign in a toxic Tory government was within the law. To deny him a Peerage was just pathetic. Hopefully he will be in the Lords soon.

Agree

What has John Bercow done to deserve a peerage? Genuine question.

Retired Speakers are traditionally given a Peerage. Look it up.

So much more deserving than all these showbizzers.

Well done Chris witty a humble man I think who will be embarrassed by this honour but quietly pleased by the honour.

Gwyneth Sat 01-Jan-22 19:44:27

Pleased to hear that Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van Tam have been honoured. They deserved it.

I think Johnson was equally responsible for thwarting May’s attempt to get brexit done: he made her political life hell at the time.

I'm pleased to see J.Lumley get an award. I believe her father led a Gurkha battalion during WW2. which made her so concerned for their well being. But for her tireless campaigning these men would still be being treated like second class soldiers which of course was quite disgraceful. As for J.Bercow? Pleased with himself, pompous rude man Deeply unattractive , say no more!

Delighted to see CW and JVT and particularly Jenny Harries getting awards but Blair - no. What were they thinking?

There are a lot of us, me included, who think he was an outstanding Speaker.

I don't mind Blair getting knighted - he was PM for a long time and did do some good things along the way, PMs usually get something -didn't Thatcher give herself an hereditary peerage?

I think it's traditional for all ex-Prime Ministers to be knighted so I suppose it was inevitable.
However, TB had to wait a bit longer than most.

Aveline Sat 01-Jan-22 16:07:44

I'm very pleased Joanna Lumley is a dame.

Biscuitmuncher Sat 01-Jan-22 15:42:19

Is this for services to making us all miserable

I absolutely can see why Joanna Lumley was made a dame, she’s done a huge amount of work outside acting to support the rights of former Gurkhas to be treated the same as other ex British army staff. She’s also involved in the HALO Trust and a number of other humanitarian initiatives. She deserves it more than most.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sat 01-Jan-22 15:02:26

It’s about time John Bercow got his peerage. I don’t mind Blair getting a knighthood. He did a lot of good things. My son was part of his illegal war too, but came home in one piece.

It is strange about the honours system. I think it is a load of nonsense at the same time as being glad that Anne Cleeves got one!

Jenn53 Sat 01-Jan-22 14:24:49

I am sorry, but I cannot understand why Joanna Lumley was honoured with a damehood - as an actress, she is certainly not in the same league as say, the wonderful Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Joan Plowright etc. Besides, her ill-judged vanity project to erect an unnecessary garden bridge in South London, costing the government millions of pounds was a waste of money when half way through it proved expensive and impractical. Those millions could have been used for something much more useful. For her to get a damehood, is clearly who you know at the top table! Tsk, tsk...rant over,

Delighted to see Chris Whitby honoured and JVT.

Ditto well deserved.
