Knighthood for Chris Whitty

Agree. I, too, am very pleased that Chris Whitty has been recognised and given a Knighthood as well as his deputy, Professor Van-Tam. They are both very deserving of the honour and are decent & likeable men.

Our excellent CMO in Wales, Frank Atherton also got a richly deserved knighthood.

Chris Whitty and JVT. Unlikely national heroes but they are! So glad to hear their work has been recognised.

No doubt at all that Whitty and co have done a sterling job these last 2 years. But what exactly is the point of a knighthood, can someone explain?

The Scottish CMO got a knighthood as well. I'm quite disappointed in him for accepting it. But not as disappointed as I am with Vanessa Redgrave

(I hope all those who lost a son/daughter in Iraq or Afghanistan are happy about Tony Blair getting an honour!)

Recognition of effort which has supported the country in very trying times, for the usually unsung heroes in this case Alegrias1. It must mean something to them, as there’s no obligation to accept.

Well done to those who are steering us through this crisis. I hope those working to exhaustion point in the NHS get the recognition they deserve to but perhaps a higher pay rise might be a better acknowledgement.

I don't want to turn this into a debate about the honours, honestly, and I do think that Whitty has done a great job. So I'll say this and disappear off.

Whitty is no "unsung hero". We all know what a great service he has done to this country, along with Van Tam and the others. I just don't understand the driving force behind giving somebody an entirely honorific title that has no benefits whatsoever. I know it must mean something to them, members of my family have received honours in the past and were so happy about it. (not knighthoods, of course!)

It just strikes me as keeping the masses happy. Whitty got basically the same award as Joanna Lumley and Craig got one that traditionally goes to spies and diplomats. Fully old world.

I shouldn’t think they are. My DSIL served three times, luckily came out unscathed physically, mentally after what he witnessed is a different matter. Blair does not deserve this accolade, neither does his wife.

I assume that he got his award for deeds he has done behind the scenes not all famous folk shout their charitable deeds from the rooftop’s.

I thought it was nice that the young lad who has slept in a tent for over 640 days and raised £600,00+ for his local hospice was recognised along with the 11 yr old boy with cerebral palsy and autism who raised money for charity.

I don't agree with the system of handing out gongs, especially to actors who are just doing what they're paid to do anyway, but handing one out to Bliar for what he's done, is shocking compared to what young Tobias Weller did to earn his.

Daniel Craig's award is for services to film and theatre. The fact that he's been given the same award as real life spies and diplomats just shows what a ridiculous system this is.

As for 11 year olds getting BEMs....words fail me.

Disappointed that Emma Raducanu was given an award... she is at the beginning of what hopefully will be a long and very successful career. These awards should be based on longterm achievements.
And I was yelling her on all the way so it is not personal!!

I would rather see Chris Whitty and Jonathan Van-Tam honoured than the usual 'celebrities'. Tony Blair, definitely not. Perhaps the sword will slip when he gets knighted.
