It's just a cold

I have been constantly worried about the long term effect of covid infection. I read research very early on which detailed the internal organs which can be affected by covid and I haven't seen anything since which contradicts it.

I worry that our very high omicron infection rates, which so many people, including our government, seem to be perfectly happy about, are actually contributing to serious problems for the future. I have been scoffed at on Gnet for this...

I found this long twitter thread. It confirms my fears. It's not written by a medic or a medical scientist, but the cited research mostly seems to be peer reviewed from reputable journals.

I'd very much appreciate comments from people who read the thread.

If he was right it was more luck than judgement. And he was gambling with peoples lives.

'IS' not 'was'.

rosie1959 Tue 11-Jan-22 13:10:01

Still plenty of testing going on Ro60
Just ordered 2 testing kits on line this morning They weren't available early on but ordered a bit later

Ro60 Tue 11-Jan-22 13:35:52

Ok will keep trying. It's going to affect the stats though.
DM has gone down with something today ?

Alegrias1 Tue 11-Jan-22 13:38:02

The latest UK gov page has tests going up by 24% in the last week and cases going up by 1%. So I think that means they are keeping up with cases?

Fingers crossed for your DM, R060

rosie1959 Tue 11-Jan-22 13:40:52

Yes do keep trying Ro60 we also have a lateral flow testing center in our town that hands them out perhaps check your councils website you might have something similar.
The uk did over 1.6 million tests yesterday

It's interesting that despite Scotland's extra restrictions they have a higher level of infection than England. Maybe people have just been disregarding the 'guidelines'? They must be doing it secretly as the hospitality industry has been very badly affected. Restaurants and bars going out of business with resultant job losses and impact on large and small suppliers.

MayBee70 Tue 11-Jan-22 15:31:53

Just read that PCR tests for asymptomatic cases are going to be scrapped in my area ( I do need to confirm that). Given that my grandson had covid asymptomatically the other week confirmed by PCR test does that mean that the official infection rate statistics will drop dramatically or are LFT test results included?

Aveline Tue 11-Jan-22 15:36:14

LFT tests still count. I suspect that lots of people just don't bother to report results though.

^Well done Scotland and Wales- it takes courage.^

Thanks Kali2 but right now England has the lowest case rate of all the four nations. The extra restrictions in Scotland were set up when we weren't sure what was going to happen with Omicron. Nicola's on later and she may well remove some of the restrictions.

Unfortunately, there's not a set of levers that can be pulled, or buttons pressed, that have the desired result. Its still a matter of judgement. Maybe Johnson was right and the others were wrong.

Thanks Kali2 but right now England has the lowest case rate of all the four nations.

As someone mentioned today when we crossed the border and met up in England.
Staff in the English hotel were all wearing masks, as did guests when they were not sitting at the table eating.

MayBee70 Tue 11-Jan-22 16:54:42

Maybe, because of the lack of restrictions, more of us in England are still being extra careful? At least Scotland and Wales were not prepared to take a gamble with the safety of its inhabitants. One of the biggest problems with this virus is the time lag between infection, serious illness and death. I remember how scared it made me when I realised that, if I did catch it, I would have to wait a week or so I find out if I was going to be seriously ill with it.

lemongrove Tue 11-Jan-22 17:13:13

It’s not an easy decision to make for any of the political leaders in the four countries of the UK, regarding Covid and restrictions, so they all listened to advice and took a judgement and hoped to be correct.

Oh no Alegrias something else, report to the Head's door tomorrow morning?
I'm trying to decide whether you're Sarah Gilbert or Sharon Peacock cos you're obviously a scientist and very clever. I'm sure you can work out why I have a username and a username2, I'm not the only one.

You have two usernames?
Why? So that you can agree with yourself?

rosie1959 Tue 11-Jan-22 17:32:18

At this moment lateral flow test have been a game changer no waiting about for PCR tests
My daughter tested positive yesterday she knew immediately thanks to lateral flow.
And thanks to our vaccination program I am not distraught with worry as she is a type 1 diabetic. She has cold like symptoms and is still working from home. We could test those in close contact so that they could continue with their work ect and I could look after my granddaughter whilst she worked
PCR tests are still being done as granddaughter needs one before nursery
All tests were reported
No amount of restrictions stop people getting infected she had been nowhere except the supermarket to get her groceries first time for months as she usually has delivery

Alegrias if you are indeed Sharon Peacock, may I just say that I prefer your hair in a medium, chin-length bob.

Alegrias1 Tue 11-Jan-22 17:56:20

I am not Sharon Peacock, but I do have a medium, chin length bob. So I'll take that ?

Gossamerbeynon1945 Tue 11-Jan-22 18:04:48

I follow chise on Twitter. Please do the same, and follow her/him. He/she (never sure whether it is male or female) very clever and very knowledgeable. I agree with Alegrias1 and what she says.

Alegrias1 Tue 11-Jan-22 18:24:46

Chise is a she ?

maddyone Tue 11-Jan-22 18:38:24

I don’t do Twitter. However I’m wondering how someone can have two user names on here. They must have two email accounts I suppose. I don’t have the first clue why anyone was want two user names.

maddyone Tue 11-Jan-22 18:40:30

MayBee I’ve just heard on the national news that PCR tests are being stopped if a person tests positive on a lateral flow test, but only if they are asymptomatic. A symptomatic person should still go for a PCR test.

It was allowed at one time, maddyone, in case a poster wanted to ask for advice about a personal problem without posting under their usual name.

However, I didn't think it was possible now.

maddyone Tue 11-Jan-22 18:43:00

Thanks for the info Calistemon.

Alegrias1 Tue 11-Jan-22 18:44:19

Even without a Twitter login you can read Chise's tweets. Search on sailorrooscout. It's a long story!

She is optimistic but she knows what she's taking about. Pagel and Gurdasani have both had a go at her, which I count as a good recommendation...

What kind of scientist is she?

Alegrias1 Tue 11-Jan-22 19:28:59

A very unusual one. Be prepared for this....
