According to the Daily Telegraph there were 2 parties held at No. 10 Downing Street the night before Prince Philip's socially distanced funeral.

This thread by the Telegraph's political editor:

We have spoken to eyewitnesses. At a leaving do for a No10 photographer it’s alleged:

Staff partied in the basement of No10, to music DJd by a special adviser.

One broke Wilf Johnson’s swing in the No10 garden.

Another was sent to the Co-op with a suitcase to buy booze.

Another event held to mark the departure of James Slack, Mr Johnson’s chief spinner, saw:

Staff gathered for a speech from Slack, with others dialling in via Zoom.

Booze drunk and attendees spilling into the garden.

Chatting and drinking into the early hours.

It's not that I don't think they should be leaked it's the timing? What underlying strategy does someone/some group have?
Boris should fall on his sword. It's already past time for that to be the honourable thing to do but modern politicians don't seem to be honourable.sad

Boris mixing outdoors n now it seems Starmer mixing indoors which one is more likely to spread Covid. I too lost family to Covid along with 3 good friends. I’m currently recovering from Covid which hasn’t been pleasant but thankful I’ve been vaccinated as felt I could have suffered much more at least should be thankful our country had the vaccine

Twig14 Fri 14-Jan-22 14:34:29

What’s going on? Now Keir Starmer discovered enjoying a drink with others during lockdown. Are they all as bad as one another?

grannybuy Fri 14-Jan-22 14:31:24

I sat alone at my DH’s funeral in Dec 2020, as did many, many others during that period. Will we all receive an apology?

Whitewavemark2 Fri 14-Jan-22 14:26:52

You simply cannot mitigate the county’s leadership breaking the law by saying “look over there”

It won’t work.

Casdon Fri 14-Jan-22 14:24:18

What’s your definition of a drinks party MayBee70? I always thought it was a pre organised by invitation event. Regardless, as I said in my original post, they were all in the wrong.

There is another viewpoint that we did not need all the restrictions put into place - they were there to frighten the public into submission. If Whitehall and the Government were aware of this maybe that is why they felt free to break the rules. I don’t know this, just wondering out loud from other reports. Still shouldn’t have happened.

Some Tory MP’s have eluded to this. The ones that don’t seem to want any restrictions that might safeguard peoples health. You know, the ones that weren’t wearing masks in parliament (actually, that was pretty much the whole of the government benches till recently wasn’t it). It’s also being picked up by all sort of conspiracy theorists and anti vacc’ers.

I think this will fizzle out simply because no doubt a few of the Met police will have attended. Enough said !

I wish Cressida Dick and her fellow Met Officers would actually do the job they are paid for. A thorough investigation of all breaches of Covid regulations in Downing Street.

She's hopeless too.

She and Johnson have no control over their staff or, quite honestly, anything.

They have both lost any authority they may have had.

Agree, wouldn’t surprise me one little bit.

Starmer wasn’t at a ‘drinks party’ GrannyGravy13 he was pictured drinking in the constituency office with party activists immediately before the Hartlepool bye election. That’s bad enough, but not as bad as a bring your own booze party where people are invited in advance by email. Corbyn has no role in the Labour Party, as he’s lost the whip.

Regardless, I think anybody who broke the rules deserves condemnation.

Depends on one’s definition of a drinks party ?

They were just as in the wrong as those partaking at No.10

Oh yes and remember the massive drama when Abbott was shown in a photo sat on a train in her own time drinking a mojito?

Such simple times ?

While I agree that parties at No10 are bad, I would ask if anyone has investigated if there were any parties for opposition members, perhaps not at such an iconic address, but still parties? I find it hard to believe that the Downing Street group are there with horns and pitchforks, while everyone else are sweetly polishing their halos, or is it just that non 10ers are just not headline news? Coronavirus has been awful for everyone, and the Media, all of them, have just made a bad situation worse by their selective reporting.

There are photos online of Mr. Starmer at a drinks party in Durham and Mr. Corbyn at a dinner party both against the Covid rules at the time. Rules the Labour Party voted for.

They make the rules, that is the difference.

I think you can be assured that if there had been any parties held by the opposition, the popular press would have been delighted to share it with everyone. Remember the drama about Jeremy Corbyn attending a dinner party with 8 guests rather than the permitted 6?

Unforgivable on so many levels. How can anyone defend such behaviour? If I had been employed at Downing Street I would have created such a fuss over all the law breaking. No integrity and no morals required if you want a job in Downing Street from top level civil servants to the police to the cleaning staff. Just wish the cat could speak!

grandtanteJE65 Fri 14-Jan-22 13:15:29

How kind you all are sympathsizing with the Prime Minister's staff about the difficulties of working for a pathalogical liar!

My standpoint is quite different. If his staff is made up of honourable, decent men and women, why have they not handed in their resignations long ago?

They must know what he is like, and that what they were doing was in direct contravention to the restrictions in place at the time.

So why are they all still working at No. 10 Downing st?

Daisymae Fri 14-Jan-22 13:13:06

Wondering what the party situation is like when the country is not in a state of emergency and the evening before the burial of a senior royal?

Dylant1234 Fri 14-Jan-22 13:00:48

I’m utterly sick of hearing “how hard we worked” as though the medics, retail workers, carers, delivery drivers, factory workers etc. weren’t working very hard too.
Most were too drained and exhausted after a shift for any partying - simply collapsing into bed for some sleep. As for Johnson, he has never worked hard and needs holidays every few weeks …..

GillT57 Fri 14-Jan-22 12:57:00

This issue is being hyped and manipulated beyond belief with msm using vile ‘my …, died alone’ to push their agenda.. does this include the members of GN who tragically lost family members and mourned alone?

I think all leaks are timed with precision and not by accident. I feel they are usually of unkind or even malicious intent

So we should ignore them due to the manner in which they have been leaked? Nah.

Your argument is rather like the backbencher who was apoplectic with rage about the leaking of MPs expenses, it wasn't the theft he was angry about, it was the leak. Strange moral code to have
