So while our government is debating on what constitutes a party, how many parties may have been held a couple of years ago, there's a terrible threat to world peace going on at the edge of Europe. Anybody else noticed?

Kali2 how do you feel about Russian submarines skirting British waters, or their jets entering British Airspace without permission?

Callistemon21 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:48:17

Russian ships and submarines often sail into our waters or near our ships, Kali and act provocatively.
It's happened for very many years.

While there was no risk of starting World War Three, he said, he believed it was part of an attempt to set up military bases in or near Ukraine.

I'm surprised you believe Putin's propaganda.

Lavrov was as usual giving her a masterclass in diplomacy and no surprise, she failed miserably.

"...two diplomatic sources as saying that during their earlier closed-door meeting Lavrov had asked Truss if she recognised Russian sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh - two regions in the south of the country where Russia has been building up its forces.

Truss replied that Britain would never recognise them as Russian, and had to be corrected by her ambassador..." No wonder he walked off.

So what do you suggest in the face of Russia obvious sabre rattling? That the West sits on its hands and hopes for the best a la Chamberlain? President Macron has also visited Putin, or is that allowed and approved of where's Boris, and Joe (curiously) are not.

Perhaps not aware, but the 'sabre rattling' and provocation started last June, by the UK with US backing.

''Russia's Vladimir Putin has accused the UK and US military of staging a "complex provocation," after British warship HMS Defender sailed near the coast of Russian-annexed Crimea.

While there was no risk of starting World War Three, he said, he believed it was part of an attempt to set up military bases in or near Ukraine.

President Putin alleged a US spy plane was part of the operation too.''

THAT was not very clever, for sure. Then you do not send someone like Liz Truss, totally inexperienced, and very poorly informed, NOT at all on top of ther brief and aware of the local geography, going in all guns blazing- and not at all representing NATO in any sense whatsoever, making things much worse.

Nothing will happen before the end of the Winter Olympics in China.

Callistemon21 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:23:48

I would suggest we proceed with the utmost caution since Putin and Xi Jinping had a cordial meeting.
It was a very warm, constructive, partnership and allied meeting, very substantive at the same time,” said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation. According to him, the talks focused on the bilateral agenda and trade and economic cooperation, but “a few words were also said on the international situation.”

Looking at the responses of the NATO allies to the Russian threat, it is striking that the most belligerent responses have come from Joe Biden and Boris Johnson, both currently very unpopular at home.

Stirring up anger at an enemy is a classic response for weak leaders.

Kali2 Sat 12-Feb-22 17:31:07

Zoejory, of course the UK is allied with NATO! Who said otherwise. Johnson or Truss do not represent NATO, in any way, shape or form.

But Johnson talks as if he’s coordinating the wests approach!

Not true, I suggest you listen to the POTUS or Monsieur Macron

Well I heard Johnson saying it: or implying it.

Zoejory Sat 12-Feb-22 17:21:12

This is untrue ... Members of NATO have to work together. Johnson and Truss went without approval of NATO, and were not representing NATO.

Kali! Why are you constantly spreading this misinformation. Of course we are working with NATO. It's absurd of you to suggest otherwise.

Here we have a press conference with Boris and the NATO Secretary General. We are allied with NATO. Whether you like it or not.

Johnson and Truss are not going to Ukraine to speak on behalf or for the European Union.

Of course they are not, they are going as part of NATO.

So much misinformation being repeated on threads.
If it was anti vaccination propaganda GNHQ would delete it.

Yes NATO!!!
What part of N.A.T.O. is difficult to understand?

I agree.

What is unfolding will debunk once and for all the myth that the EU has been instrumental in securing peace. The main players like Germany and France are showing no leadership and precious little unity.

I assume you realise that the German constitution only allows Germany to be involved in NATO and UN missions. The UK is a member of both. Germany is severely limited in its ability to go to war on its own (for understandable reasons). There is no EU army.

Indeed, and that is exactly the issue.

Do you believe 'the West' could win a 'limited' nuclear attack on Russia. Really? And that they would not retaliate.

The only person talking about a nuclear attack is you Kali2

I have not heard one reference on radio or tv news to this.

Kali2 Sat 12-Feb-22 14:44:53

This very scenario has been forecast by CND from the very early days of nuclear weapons. And even more so, since smaller weapons have introduced to total folly of 'a limited and winnable nuclear strike'.

Anyone who understands this would not wish to get involved headlong in a war where there would be no winners, let alone protect Ukraine ?

If this does not mean blindly letting Mr.Putin invade Russia Kali2 perhaps you could please explain what you actually meant.

The West has no need to put boots on the ground in Ukraine, warfare has moved on considerably since the WW2.
