So while our government is debating on what constitutes a party, how many parties may have been held a couple of years ago, there's a terrible threat to world peace going on at the edge of Europe. Anybody else noticed?

Not true, I suggest you listen to the POTUS or Monsieur Macron

Look Russia moved their country to all the many military bases

Jaberwok Sat 12-Feb-22 16:43:33

Kier Starmer bangs the drum for war with Russia Liking him to Blair a war monger

This is untrue ... Members of NATO have to work together. Johnson and Truss went without approval of NATO, and were not representing NATO.

Kali! Why are you constantly spreading this misinformation. Of course we are working with NATO. It's absurd of you to suggest otherwise.

Here we have a press conference with Boris and the NATO Secretary General. We are allied with NATO. Whether you like it or not.

Well I heard Johnson saying it: or implying it.

Kali2 Sat 12-Feb-22 17:31:07

Zoejory, of course the UK is allied with NATO! Who said otherwise. Johnson or Truss do not represent NATO, in any way, shape or form.

varian Sat 12-Feb-22 17:59:12

Looking at the responses of the NATO allies to the Russian threat, it is striking that the most belligerent responses have come from Joe Biden and Boris Johnson, both currently very unpopular at home.

Stirring up anger at an enemy is a classic response for weak leaders.

So what do you suggest in the face of Russia obvious sabre rattling? That the West sits on its hands and hopes for the best a la Chamberlain? President Macron has also visited Putin, or is that allowed and approved of where's Boris, and Joe (curiously) are not.

Callistemon21 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:23:48

I would suggest we proceed with the utmost caution since Putin and Xi Jinping had a cordial meeting.
It was a very warm, constructive, partnership and allied meeting, very substantive at the same time,” said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation. According to him, the talks focused on the bilateral agenda and trade and economic cooperation, but “a few words were also said on the international situation.”

Nothing will happen before the end of the Winter Olympics in China.

Perhaps not aware, but the 'sabre rattling' and provocation started last June, by the UK with US backing.

''Russia's Vladimir Putin has accused the UK and US military of staging a "complex provocation," after British warship HMS Defender sailed near the coast of Russian-annexed Crimea.

While there was no risk of starting World War Three, he said, he believed it was part of an attempt to set up military bases in or near Ukraine.

President Putin alleged a US spy plane was part of the operation too.''

THAT was not very clever, for sure. Then you do not send someone like Liz Truss, totally inexperienced, and very poorly informed, NOT at all on top of ther brief and aware of the local geography, going in all guns blazing- and not at all representing NATO in any sense whatsoever, making things much worse.

Lavrov was as usual giving her a masterclass in diplomacy and no surprise, she failed miserably.

"...two diplomatic sources as saying that during their earlier closed-door meeting Lavrov had asked Truss if she recognised Russian sovereignty over Rostov and Voronezh - two regions in the south of the country where Russia has been building up its forces.

Truss replied that Britain would never recognise them as Russian, and had to be corrected by her ambassador..." No wonder he walked off.

Callistemon21 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:48:17

Russian ships and submarines often sail into our waters or near our ships, Kali and act provocatively.
It's happened for very many years.

While there was no risk of starting World War Three, he said, he believed it was part of an attempt to set up military bases in or near Ukraine.

I'm surprised you believe Putin's propaganda.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:48:19

Kali2 how do you feel about Russian submarines skirting British waters, or their jets entering British Airspace without permission?

GrannyGravy13 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:49:04

Oops sorry Callistemon21 crossed posts

GrannyGravy13 Sat 12-Feb-22 18:50:39

Totally wrong of course. All provocation is wrong.

Even Wikipedia says that the HMS Defender incident last June was a planned and deliberate provocation, and that the UK was well aware of the risks and dangers involved. As proven by the documents someone left (or "happened" to leave?) at a bus station.

Are you saying that Liz Truss did a great job of diffusing tensions? Or that she represented NATO?

The invasion and annexation of Crimea in 2014 was a warning that if Russia wants to do the same in Ukraine then she will, while the West dithers . What if Poland then becomes the next country to be threatened and perhaps invaded? What will the West do then? Putin could, perhaps is, behaving exactly like Hitler in demanding and taking more and more while being appeased by the West. China also has Taiwan on its radar, North Korea, the South. Russia's ambitions could certainly embolden others, knowing that the West will just ring its hands in despair, until??!

Callistemon21 Sat 12-Feb-22 20:04:02

Some elderly Ukrainians remember the Holodomor or have told their descendants about it and are fearful of it happening again.

Jaberwok Sat 12-Feb-22 20:13:38

Sorry, wring not ring!

Yes, it is just an awful situation. And yet, that is the reality of Nuclear Weapons - Putin knows that and is using it. And it is just so so wrong, and the parrallels you draw about Hitler are totally correct. But the current situation, with nuclear war heads on both sides, a totally different situation.

It is so easy to say the West should not 'wring hands in despair' - and yet- what is the alternative, when dealing with the hands of a very ambitious madman, a psychopath, like Putin.

And he knows that ... tragically. He knows that the world is at stake, and he is prepared, perhaps, to see how it goes.

What CND have been warning about all those years, and they were derided and mocked.

I think after the Winter Olympics in Beijing the Russians will invade Ukraine and China will invade Taiwan. Some say a pact has already been drawn up between Russia & China.
