Why now???

I think I am writing this before the Grayson report is published. I certainly haven't as yet seen or heard what is in it. I know what I think and I know many friends and colleagues think the same. But in all the endless , relentless media coverage the Downing Street situation has had, there is one question that keeps going round on my head and it is "why now"?
The Christmas whatever it was that sparked all this outrage was in December 2020, but nothing was said about it for exactly one full year. Why not? I do not believe that nobody knew about it. Allegra Stanton, who fell on her sword as a result, is married to a Telegraph reporter. I do not read the Telegraph so have no idea what coverage they have given it, but surely he must have known. I can't help but wonder if not only was the event ( I will not say "party " until we know more)known about, but that some of the press were in attendance which is why there was no mention of it at the time and they only went public 12 months on when they had no choice.
As for the gatherings in the garden, well you had better shoot me and most of my colleagues now, because we have done the same. The building where I work houses umpteen NHS clinics: diabetes, podiatry, district nurses etc etc. There are also offices large, small and downright tiny where local government and council work is carried on. The ground floor is a public library and a counter for the public to come to with council issues. Outside at the back is a small enclosed garden : a lawn with some benches and tables. In the summer we all leave our offices and sit outside enjoying the fresh air and eating our lunches. We could have stayed inside, but aren't we encouraged to be outside. And once again, WHY NOW? All these events happened over a year ago. So who suddenly decided it was the crime of the century, who took the photos and who decided NOW. I know what I think.

I've been asking this since it first burst into the media. All very odd.

Alegrias1 Mon 31-Jan-22 15:26:02

If all this came out when the government were asking us to abide by restrictions, how many people would have thought that we were being made a fool of and just ignored the restrictions.

People still think we're being made a fool of but there are so few restrictions now that there is nothing to ignore.

There are people behind this that are manipulating the population in more ways than you can possibly imagine.

Doodledog Mon 31-Jan-22 15:34:03

Here is the report in case people haven't seen it yet.

EllanVannin Mon 31-Jan-22 15:56:16

I too have also wondered how many other people " broke the rules " too during that time. We have nigh on 70 million citizens in this country were they all hunkered up behind closed doors ? Doubt it as some people can't stand being cooped up for a day without eating somewhere/ visiting someone or, indeed flouting the rules doing whatever.

I don't know why or how it's taken this long or what the purpose is behind it, but can everyone swear that they were not celebrating something ? Pinocchio's ?

Alegrias1 Mon 31-Jan-22 15:59:04

Again? How often? Yes I swear. You calling me a liar?

Even if we were all dancing in the streets and snogging strangers, none of us is the PM and none of us set the rules. Today of all days, excuses for the worst PM in living memory is not on.

Allsorts Mon 31-Jan-22 15:59:23

Revenge of Dominic, that’s why it’s now.

GagaJo Mon 31-Jan-22 16:09:55

Exactly Allsorts.

Let's not be under any illusion that the next PM is going to be any different. All cut from the same cloth.

Alegrias1 Mon 31-Jan-22 16:11:27

That's not true GagaJo

Are you watching Parliament? There's never been anybody like him, at least in my memory. He is disgraceful.

He's a lying coward.

Parsley3 Mon 31-Jan-22 16:12:23

EllenVannin did you break the rules?

EllanVannin Mon 31-Jan-22 16:14:07

It'll have to be an elected PM too. Who ?

GagaJo Mon 31-Jan-22 16:21:37

Alegrias, Gove? Look what he did to education, all in order to make a name for himself. Drunk as a skunk in HOP. Hancock? Shagging in his office in lockdown? Psycho Patel?

They're all self serving, lying, power hungry t**ts. Yes, BJ is king of the t**ts but we'll be no better off under any of the others.

Coastpath Mon 31-Jan-22 16:22:21

I can swear that I didn't celebrate anything. Several key family and friend life events went unmarked.

Alegrias1 Mon 31-Jan-22 16:26:04

I don't really care who comes next. It will be a Tory and I deplore Tory policies. But it will be a Tory. But none of them, none of them will be as bad as Johnson. He is bringing this country to the brink of being a banana republic and he thinks he's still in the debating club at whatever Uni he went to or in the Bullingdon Club.

Should we just stick with this guy because we don't know anybody better? Might as well roll over and die.

GagaJo Mon 31-Jan-22 16:27:25

I did that mentally when he got in. It was obvious where the country was going. So sad. Could have been so different.

Alegrias1 Mon 31-Jan-22 16:28:05

Well I'm not ready to give up yet even if you are.

Yes but you weren't meant to - in your own garden fine but lots of people were fined for eating lunch in parks etc. Also I doubt nurses were drinking wine and beer on duty. We are not allowed. If they were then that is a reason to report it. Now is because of the more recent things so they are investigating it all in retrospect as it should be.

paddyann54 Mon 31-Jan-22 16:46:24

We didn't break any rules,we didn't leave the house except to pick up prescriptions .No wonder it's taken so long to get a handle on the pandemic if so many on here didn't bother with "rules" how many people died because you thought you didn't have to comply .

growstuff Mon 31-Jan-22 16:49:07

I also doubt whether a new Conservative leader will result in fairer policy. However, IMO the point is that nobody should be allowed to get away with what Johnson has done. If it's swept under the carpet, I really think it says a lot about the people defending him.

AGAA4 Mon 31-Jan-22 16:50:19

Yes some people will have broken the rules but I didn't and neither did any of my friends and family.
The PM and his crew broke their own rules that many of us abided by to our detriment in some cases. Unforgivable.

EllanVannin Mon 31-Jan-22 16:56:37

No Parsley I certainly didn't break the rules. I've been living like a hermit for the past 2+ years.

EllanVannin Mon 31-Jan-22 16:58:21

I could have broken the rules , but when you have police checking to see how many are attending funerals, it's difficult.

Ladyleftfieldlover Mon 31-Jan-22 16:59:04

We didn’t break the rules. Didn’t see our family for months and celebrated several birthdays on zoom.

Josieann Mon 31-Jan-22 17:02:26

I think it's going a bit far too suggest that many GNs on here caused the death of other people by their breaking the rules.
But where the PM is concerned I agree that those who made the rules should adhere to them. He was in a position of trust and should pay for his error of judgment. Who knows why DC and others didn't make it known at the time? Strange.

EllanVannin Mon 31-Jan-22 17:03:18

Protests were still continuing weren't they ? House parties galore which were reported in newspapers on a daily basis. Flights continued with hordes coming and going. Buses/ trains still operated-----there wasn't even a proper lockdown !! Why ?
