The protest was nothing to do with Starmer until they caught sight of him. I expect that any well known politician would have had the same treatment.

If you go back on this thread a page or two you'll find that someone explained just what this group of protesters was.

Brother Jeremy once had him thrown out of a meeting on climate change - I think he was among the usual mob of hecklers... not sure Piers is Jeremy's best advocate ?!

I'd love to hear some of the conversations between the two brothers - I know Jeremy isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he appears conventionally normal compared to his brother who seems to haunt these kinds of 'protests' on a regular basis! He comes across as being slightly unhinged...

Mr Corbyn told Sky News he was about 50 yards away from Sir Keir when he heard the shouting and went over just as the Labour leader was bundled into a police car.

He added: "Some of the protesters just saw Keir Starmer walking past and started shouting at him, it was mostly about how he's the worst opposition leader we've ever had.

"They did say things about Jimmy Savile, but it was nothing to do with Boris's announcement, that was just a cheap way of dodging the bullet around the parties issue.

"We couldn't care less about the parties, we want more."

Not touchy. Just sickened by silly people who can't see the truth. Oh, and putting little smiley faces isn't endearing or funny, it is bloody disrespectful to Savile's child victims.

I saw that comment, and decided to treat it with the contempt it deserves - by ignoring it and not biting the bait.

I had a family member who used to find it amusing to rile people about various aspects of their personality or appearance. Nothing horrendous, just silly little digs - nothing based on anything real, simply personal comments for the sake of it.

Of course some got a tad annoyed, and would put him in his place.

... and then he used to get annoyed and say, "oh, touchy today aren't we?" After deliberately rattling people's cages just for the sheer sake of it and then pretending to be surprised when they reacted.

That post is in the same vein. 'Cages' were being rattled just for the hell of it, and to have a dig at people stating facts because the poster couldn't engage with them. It's a much used tactic.

The electorate seem to suffer from some strange collective amnesia when it comes to many things that Johnson has said or done over the years.

Let’s also not forget that Mr Johnson described spending money investigating historical allegations of child sexual abuse as “spaffing money up the wall”.

Excerpt from Reuters' fact finding:

"In 2012, Starmer appointed his Principal Legal Advisor, Alison Levitt QC, to examine the decisions made by the CPS in relation to the 2007 and 2008 allegations.

Levitt’s findings are laid out in a report here , which Starmer published in full in 2013 (here).

The report found that in October 2009, the CPS lawyer responsible for the cases advised that no prosecution could be brought on the grounds that none of the complainants were “prepared to support any police action”.

Levitt said she found nothing to suggest decisions not to prosecute were “consciously influenced by any improper motive on the part of either police or prosecutors”.

Levitt said in the report that Savile might have been prosecuted if the police and prosecutors took a different approach.

Starmer subsequently criticised the handling of the allegations by police and prosecutors in his 2013 statement on the report. He also apologised for “shortcomings in the part played by the CPS in these cases” and said he hoped it would be a “watershed moment” for the handling of such complaints.

Since his death aged 84 in 2011, a series of inquiries and investigations found Savile was responsible for six decades of sexual assault and abuse of hundreds of children and women (here)."

My understanding is that the victims were young and were not prepared to go to court. Can you imagine children or young teenagers having to face in court the raft of lawyers that Savile could afford? We all know that in cases involving the rape of adults the victim is often trashed by the defendant's lawyers.

That's a very good point Mamie. I often wonder whether this lot were just inherently corrupt from the outset and got themselves into politics so as to practise this very behaviour, or did politics make them so? What I'm wondering is whether politics worldwide is generally attracting a different type of politician with dubious values.

... even those of us who are not particularly enamoured with the man... even those Tories who, like Sunak, "wouldn't have said that" and have distanced themselves, like my Tory MP, from the unnecessary slur... we're all just part of a fan club.

well it is obvious that despite valiant efforts of many on here, of differing political beliefs, with many examples of quotes from people involved that people like you will continue to believe that Starmer 'let Savile off'. When I read posts like yours, I realise why this country is in the mess it is in

I don't know who is in the Starmer fan club ... I'm not. I have only ever voted Labour once in my life and I don't think Starmer was even an MP then.

I am, however, a fan of fairness and not accusing people for things they didn't do. I'm also a fan of looking beyond headlines at real issues, looking at consequences and not being swayed by superficial appearances.

I am not a fan of people spreading false rumours or treating politics as a soap opera. It is not true that all MPs are lazy and corrupt, whatever you think, although Johnson's adherence to the Trump playbook might make it difficult to sort out fact from fiction.
