Behaviour at PMQs

I was appalled at the dreadful behaviour at todays PMQs, demonstrated by the Tory party, especially as they tried to shout down Caroline Lucas. The phrase "led by donkeys "was illustrated in full by their braying. I also thought Linsey Hoyle should have stepped in more quickly and shown more support.
I wonder what you think.

paddyann54 Wed 23-Feb-22 16:59:38

I stopped watching PMQ'sthe disrepect shown to the elected members of the SNP sickens me.
Is this REALLY democracy ?
Whatever the personalfeeling of the opposite bench the men and women of the SNP have been elected on ever increasing votes by the people of Scotland and quite frankly are doing a better job than Bo'jo's circus of clowns and incompetents..not to mention crooks and liars
.What it does do is show us exactly where we stand with the toxic tories and that can only be to the benefit of the Independence cause.

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 17:07:26

In all fairness paddyann54 no more disrespect is shown by the PM and cabinet members to the SNP than it is to any opposition party. They have no manners or respect for other views of whatever persuasion whatsoever. They don’t even show courtesy to other members of the Tory party who dare to voice an opposing view. Boorish.

It was appalling- and particularly the bit with Caroline Lucas.

And why did the Speaker allow the PM to walk off when Chris Bryant asked a question about a Russian oligarch. Surely he should have stopped him and request that he remains.

Shocking disrespect

Kali2 I missed PMQT today, so thanks for posting that link. Johnson's behaviour was appalling. I think the Speaker needs to get a better grip on behaviour - like him or loathe him, Berrow kept better order.

Curlywhirly Wed 23-Feb-22 17:38:30

Bercow

Doodledog Wed 23-Feb-22 17:44:25

Bercow is a big miss. He must have been annoying to Brexiteers, but like it or not, he insisted that Parliamentary protocols were adhered to, regardless of who was speaking or misbehaving. Hoyle is a kitten by comparison.

DaisyAnne Wed 23-Feb-22 17:44:39

Caroline Lucas did go on at length before getting to her question. Mind you Johnson gives a PPB everytime in his last answer to Keir Starmer. In some of the more modern Parliaments (Scotland included), whatever the "chair" is called just switches off the mike if someone doesn't get to the question.

However, the braying of the Terrible Tories was stopping her from speaking. I think Mr Speaker was a bit miffed in general today.

I agree

We are at a point in history when strength, eloquence, diplomacy, honesty and moral courage are vital and this undisciplined, braying mob are ruling the country.

''However, the braying of the Terrible Tories was stopping her from speaking. I think Mr Speaker was a bit miffed in general today.''

miffed is not the word I'd use. I am sure he is a very nice, decent man, but he is totally out of his depth and just does not have the clout.

Whoever was in power would be acting in exactly the same childish way.

Coastpath Wed 23-Feb-22 18:32:27

With respect Germanshepherdsmum you don't know that.

Your point doesn't detract from the fact that we need excellent leadership now and we don't have it. For example, the comments made by the Defence Secretary today seem provocative, childish and foolhardy.

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 18:34:58

I don’t think you’re right Germanshepherdsmum. I’ve been watching PMQ for years, and the level of sheer rudeness shown by this cabinet is unprecedented. Heated disagreement is always present regardless of who’s in power, of course, but not the consistent disdain shown to everybody who dares to challenge. It’s not because it’s a Tory Government, because this behaviour didn’t happen under Teresa May or David Cameron

growstuff Wed 23-Feb-22 18:38:49

Nor did the constant avoiding questions and lying. Our PM is taking the p*ss - and getting away with it!

varian Wed 23-Feb-22 18:40:56

The Tory MPs behaved like a gang of yobbos.

Their behavuor are so uncouth, so course, so disreputable, it makes me as a British citizen, living in a constituency where we used to have an upstanding decent LibDem MP, be ashamed to be represented by a Tory MP.

MayBee70 Wed 23-Feb-22 18:43:50

As someone explained to me yesterday ( it might have been on here or Facebook) parliamentary privilege only worked because the people in the house acted in a morally acceptable way. Under Boris Johnson this is no longer the case. Parliament has just turned into a pantomime and, imo it needs to move with the times. All this division bell stuff etc needs to stop. Plus all of the stupid plant questions which are just there to give the questioner a moment of glory and a rewarding thank you from their beloved leader.

growstuff Wed 23-Feb-22 18:44:40

Ironically, they're the ones who bleat on about sovereignty. Frankly, I can't say I'm very proud of being a citizen represented by hooligans.

I'm afraid you're right Kali but then I wouldn't like to be up against someone who set out to be the English Oligarch. He (Johnson) seems increasingly petty although I am not sure those who have fallen for every one of the steps in the Dictators Handbook would agree.

I see Trump (the US Johnson) has praised Putin and has described Vladimir Putin's aggression towards Ukraine as "genius", "wonderful" and "very savvy".

Talking about Putin's description of his "peace-keeping" Trump is quoted as saying "I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said 'this is genius'.

And this was the man some on here could not see for what he is - any more than they can see Johnson for what he is.

Ladyleftfieldlover Wed 23-Feb-22 18:51:22

Bring back Bercow.

varian Wed 23-Feb-22 18:53:23

Lindsay Hoyle does seem quite weak with comparison to John Bercow.

Madgran77 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:03:57

I just cant bear to watch it on anymore. The whole obnoxious behaviour as standard system, all trying to "outsmart" each other needs to be completely reformed. Not an example to wider society. I find it appalling

GillT57 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:18:13

There has always been an element of pantomime and circus about PMQs and that was, to me, part of its peculiar eccentric charm, nobody wants to watch a board meeting, BUT we have now moved beyond that and into a rude disrespectful jeering bullying session. Hoyle is poor at control and very poor at enforcing what are basic rules of courtesy (let alone democracy) by allowing Johnson to walk out midway through Bryant's question.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 23-Feb-22 19:23:32

For a start, does anyone recall the recent ‘sign language’ episode? Don’t tell me Labour would be any different. Just imagine Angela Rayner, for one, on the Government’s front bench.
