Behaviour at PMQs

I was appalled at the dreadful behaviour at todays PMQs, demonstrated by the Tory party, especially as they tried to shout down Caroline Lucas. The phrase "led by donkeys "was illustrated in full by their braying. I also thought Linsey Hoyle should have stepped in more quickly and shown more support.
I wonder what you think.

"An example to wider society"
I've just fiinished watching the replay and my first thought was if the UK knew where the decisions about your income and welfare were coming from there would be a revolution".
But most just accept it.

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 19:37:16

You aren’t hearing what people are saying Germanshepherdsmum. The scenario is the same at every PMQ now, the PM and cabinet belittle all opposition through hundreds of individual incidents. They have no courtesy for anybody who isn’t in their little gang.

Oldbat1 Wed 23-Feb-22 19:45:49

The Speaker is weak and either doesn’t care or is totally out of his depth. He doesn’t seem to be interested in what is going on. Why is he always looking down. I would have loved John Bercow still to be the Speaker - like him or loathe him he knew his stuff. The Tory MPs involved in trying to shout down Caroline Lucas are a disgrace. Johnson is allowed not to answer questions and waffle on with his own Agenda.

An utter disgrace

Germanshepherdsmum

For a start, does anyone recall the recent ‘sign language’ episode? Don’t tell me Labour would be any different. Just imagine Angela Rayner, for one, on the Government’s front bench.

Bit like imagining IACGMOOH’s Nadine Dorries perhaps. Can’t imagine Angela eating disgusting animal/bird parts on live television though…( didn’t she get fined for not attending parliament at the time, too…)

Coastpath Wed 23-Feb-22 20:27:28

From what I have seen of Angela Rayner in parliament over the past few weeks she holds her own at PMQ time brilliantly and with great charm in the face of smirks, head shaking, boos and general rudeness from the bench opposite her. I have not seen her jeering or shouting over people who are trying to speak. I've not seen her get up and walk away rather than answer a direct question. She has consistently looked more controlled, dignified and convincing than the mob yelling and cat calling today.

You always seem such a respectful, well mannered and measured person Germanshepherdsmum I think you must surely be disappointed with the behaviour on the Tory benches today. Having read with interest your posts about your your professional life I am quite sure you would not have tolerated such bad behaviour from the people who were in your charge when you were working.

Wes Streeting, the Labour shadow health minister has apologised for a jibe at the PM about the serial killer Harold Shipman made during PMQ’s today.

DaisyAnne Wed 23-Feb-22 21:07:43

He would. He seems to have a functioning brain. How many others did the same from the group of rowdy louts on the government side, I wonder.

Casdon Wed 23-Feb-22 21:34:55

This is what he said:
‘Lectures from you (Johnson) on personal responsibility? What next? Harold Shipman on medical ethics?’
He apologised for it being in poor taste. I rate him, he’s a sharp cookie, and he has the grace and insight to know if he oversteps the mark and apologise for doing so.
Where is Johnson’s apology following his lies about Starmer being involved in the Jimmy Savile case. There’s absolutely no comparison.

DaisyAnne Wed 23-Feb-22 21:47:40

I can see why he was angry and appreciate his willingness to apologise Casdon. Although he chose a harsh simile, he is not wrong, is he? With reference to the words he used his apology would, presumably, be to Parliament not Johnson.

Johnson has never learned how to apologise so it won't happen.

GillT57 Wed 23-Feb-22 21:52:08

GSM you seem to be obsessed with Angela Rayner! From what I have seen, she has passion but integrity even in the face of the disgusting jeers from the Tory bench. Her comments in a private side meeting bear no comparison to what went on today. I appreciate you are to the right in your political beliefs, but surely as a citizen, professional person, parent you cannot possibly condone what is going on? Anyone who believes in constitutional democracy and the rule of law should be both disgusted and afraid at what this corrupt man and his cronies are getting away with

I just cant bear to watch it on anymore. The whole obnoxious behaviour as standard system, all trying to "outsmart" each other needs to be completely reformed. Not an example to wider society. I find it appalling

Indeed so - I simply cannot bring myself to watch it. It makes my heart sink.

I’ve just watched the exchange Caroline Lucas was referring to and an gobsmacked. It’s here twitter.com/carolecadwalla/status/1496488739136323585?s=21

I know it’s widely accepted that Russia interfered in the referendum (& it’s easy to see why, it has weakened the U.K. and caused disruption). I also know that Johnson/Tory Party have been accused of being rather cosy with the Russians & I know there is a lot of Russian money in the City, but I was still gobsmacked by this.

Nezumi65 Wed 23-Feb-22 23:55:27

Oh it’s linking to the wrong one -the second video of Johnson with the Russian foreign minister

Nezumi65 Thu 24-Feb-22 00:00:03

It’s an old exchange btw

I used to teach PSHE to older teenagers and along with studying democracy and the voting system they were encouraged to understand the UK political spectrum. At the time watching clips of PMQs was a really good way of getting them into the subject matter.

Within the wider PHSE curriculum the pupils were encouraged to demonstrate respect, learn to express disagreement without rancour, debate using reasoned arguments etc. and I have to say that they made a much better job of it than anything to be seen at PMQs nowadays.

I'm afraid if I were still teaching I would be using the clips of PMQs to demonstrate to my pupils how NOT to behave.

~To be fair there are some tory MPs who do not make governing into a game. I heard Tom Tugendhat this morning, , obviously knows what he is talking about ,is ,knowledgeable.quiet, calm. Now he would make a good PM.

Anyone in the Tory party who is not an extreme right-wing swivel-eyed lunatic would make a better PM.

There are Tory MPs who rightly find this whole situation in Parliament and with this current government an embarrassment. They need to do something about it. There is nothing we can do sadly.

I assume you’re joking! He was a very entertaining host on HIGNFY but that’s it really. No substance.

CvD66 Thu 24-Feb-22 15:53:20

I wonder how many of you have noticed the increasing number of male - mostly Tory MPs - who do not use the phrase: 'the honourable lady' when replying to female MPs. For starters, the PM failed to do this yesterday when responding to Caroline Lucas. I've noticed this failure often when Angela Rayner is posing questions (and yes Coastpath her manner and demeanour is significantly more polite than many facing her). The Speaker should call out this creeping misogony!

Iam64 Thu 24-Feb-22 16:06:53

Imagine if Tom Tugendhat was PM - I can only think behaviour at PMQs would improve, as would the government

Angela Raynor is settling into her role rather well
