A LAB leak is now considered the most likely origin of the Covid pandemic “behind closed doors” of the Government, it has been claimed, after Boris Johnson signalled that security measures would be enhanced to prevent accidental escape.

On Monday, the Prime Minister told the House of Commons the UK Biosecurity Strategy would be refreshed to protect against “natural zoonosis and laboratory leaks” in a public acknowledgement of the threat from insecure research facilities.

There is mounting suspicion that Covid-19 leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology that had been experimenting on bat coronaviruses in the years before the virus first emerged in Wuhan city.

The Government has issued a call for evidence before drafting a new biosecurity strategy, which will deal with “accidental release and dual-use research of concern, where life science research is capable of being misapplied to do harm”.

Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, of Magdalene College, Cambridge, who has submitted evidence for the strategy, said: “The official view (within government) is that it is as likely as anything else to have caused the pandemic.”

“Behind closed doors most people think it’s a lab leak.” ?

That has been in the public domain for a very loooong time!

Urmstongran Wed 23-Feb-22 21:35:05

We don’t seem to be making much of a song and dance about it! Millions of people worldwide have died, lost businesses, suffered unimaginably in so many ways and ... nothing??
No sanctions against China?

Hetty58 Wed 23-Feb-22 21:42:28

Urmstongran, of course no sanctions. Where else would we buy everything from?

Blossoming Wed 23-Feb-22 21:44:15

It’s not exactly news.

I think that shows the importance of free speech, if I remember rightly that 'idea's was censored in America.

Daisymae Wed 23-Feb-22 21:47:24

Funny how initially anyone putting this forward as a possibility was shouted down. Now there's no political will to call the originator to accept responsibility. Remind me which country still has a zero Covid policy? I agree it should be front page news.

ExDancer Wed 23-Feb-22 21:51:02

Oh I've long pondered on this. China's economy grows and flourishes year on year, it put on a joke of a winter Olympics and we continue to court trade with this noxious regime.
And ignore the evidence of gross negligence in its scientific experimental labs.
What is wrong with us?
Imagine the reaction had it escaped from Porton Down or somewhere! Britain would have been rightly ostracised by the whole world and we'd have made compensation until we bankrupted ourselves.

lavendermine Wed 23-Feb-22 21:52:59

This was put into the public domain two years ago. Old news.

There’s no way of breaking this gently to you, but, No one, no country is going to confront the chinese

They now more or less own Montenegro which gives them a port on the Adriatic.

The same with Srilanka.

Then there’s this story, how true it is, I don’t know. But do I think it’s possible, of course I do.

Was anyone daft enough to believe anything the Chinese authorities said? As for their official death rate from covid19.....yeah right

Blossoming Wed 23-Feb-22 22:07:47

China has been quietly buying up America’s national debt for many years. The US can’t afford to upset them.

There was a poster on here who said this was all very, very worrying and I agreed with her on all this but she was told she was scaremongering.

I read some time ago that it was decided that the virus had leaked from a laboratory. I had been ranting about China being responsible throughout the world for millions of deaths, loss of income, mental health issues and childhood suffering, but no-one seems to have held them accountable. They did not contain the virus or even admit that it could pass from person to person until it was much too late. It's truly shocking the suffering they have caused.

maddyone Thu 24-Feb-22 00:28:29

I’ve always thought this was the case, but without any proof. I just thought the whole way the Chinese acted stank right from the beginning. Neither did I believe the whole wet market idea, which was put out by the Chinese. How absolutely coincidental, the very wet market out of thousands of them up and down the country, that just happened to be in the very city where there were, or are, two massive laboratories researching guess what? Coronavirus’s and bats!

Above, a link to a thread from last year. There was an interesting series of two or three programmes on Channel 4

Ive never believed the virus was a natural one. I try not to buy Chinese goods and I also do not understand why so many supported that farce of a winter olympics. I have nothing against ordinary Chinese people, but I won't forget those who bestowed this hell upon us. Im doing my own sanctions.

nanna8 Thu 24-Feb-22 05:16:48

The only question in my mind is was it deliberate or did it escape by accident ? Thinning out the older members of the community? Did it exceed their wildest dreams ? Nothing we can do about it and it will happen again, too. Maybe Russia next time, seems to be the warfare of the future.

I didn’t watch any Winter Olympics to be honest or read about it what was farcical about it ?

Unless there's a new development in the form of fresh evidence and/or actual proof, why should it be front page news? It's not news at all.

M0nica Thu 24-Feb-22 06:48:58

As others have said this suggestion has been swirling around since COVID first reached us. Unfortunately what is lacking is that absolutely firm incontrovertable data that will prove it beyond argument.

It is like a crime that has been committed, the police know who committed it, but just do not have enough evidence to stand up in court.

We say there is nothing we can do. What we can do is try and avoid buying Chinese goods. Yes, they are ubiquitous, yes the alternatives may be more expensive, but if everyone didn't buy a Chinese product once a month - and there are 65 million of us - that must be worth at least one Evergiven worth of goods every year.

vegansrock Thu 24-Feb-22 07:10:36

The Chinese own much of the utilities up in the U.K. - we have allowed foreign ownership of so much here - sold to the highest bidder. Thanks Thatcher and all.

tickingbird Thu 24-Feb-22 07:36:13

Oh is it politically correct to call China out now? I thought we had to play nice and not say nasty things about that dreadful regime.

What they have done to the world with Covid is unforgivable and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it was deliberate.

Who do you imagine is controlling what you think or say?

At the start of the pandemic, I saw a young female scientist being interviewed on tv. She had been working in the Wuhan laboratory at the time of the outbreak.

She was 100 % certain that the virus had leaked from there. She escaped to the Uk as she was being ‘hushed up’ and wanted to tell her truth. Never been heard of since,
