Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

That's what I've been thinking Callistemon.

Callistemon21 Sat 05-Mar-22 14:26:31

Surely, surely, there must be someone in the Russian hierarchy who thinks this is wrong?
A few someones who could take out Putin, Lavrov et al?

Iam64 Sat 05-Mar-22 13:04:02

MayBee70, we disagree on this one. Zelensky is fighting the might and inhumanity of Putin’s war machine. It’s his job to do all he can to protect his people. I’d worry if he wasn’t shouting for help.

Like everyone I know, I’m scared of nato/eu/Uk/US action escalating the war but many knowledgable Putin/Russia watchers believe he’s capable of nuclear war whatever we do or don’t do.

The stop the war approach is to blame Nato etc for using aggressive language, for example, and provoking him. It sounds an awful lot like the kind of excuses made by domestic abusers - look what you made me do.

Absolutely volver can't imagine what he is going through with his people.

volver Sat 05-Mar-22 12:39:54

Zelensky doesn't have to stop doing anything, we don't get to tell him what he can and can't do.

He can criticise us if he wants, it's not a childhood game where we'll decide to take our toys away if he's not a good boy and tells us how nice we are.

I don't think there should be a no-fly zone but the man is President of a country that is being torn apart. He's probably a bit angry.

MayBee70 Sat 05-Mar-22 12:12:14

Much as I admire Zelensky, he must stop criticising us for not getting involved militarily. Surely he realises it is impossible for us to do so without the whole thing escalating?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 05-Mar-22 09:59:42

A period of quiet, it isn’t an act of humanitarian m, it is a tactic the Russians employed in Syria

“This is a very common Russian military tactic. They did this in Syria as well. Declare a ceasefire for "humanitarian" reasons, then state that anybody who stayed in the city is CLEARLY a jihadi or a Nazi or whatever, and bombard the civilian areas with that as your PR line.”

Monty Don - thinks these colours are so appropriate so he posted them for us to enjoy.

If this is true it is slightly comforting

Russian generals have been speaking to US military chiefs for years, they have already said they will defy any order by Putin to fire nukes unless they have an inbound war head.

Also, if the Russians are in control of the power station they will not, one supposes, be shelling it any more. Which is also a slight comfort..

Thank you so much for sharing this, as you say it is slightly comforting...

Looking at maps and other information, I think Moldova will be next and Georgia.

oh yes, nature is my calm place. I am still aware but need to be outside, like you

karmalady, silverlining48, mokryna - and any others, whose names I have missed - I had thought I couldn't feel any worse about what was happening in Ukraine, but learning about what had happened to Krystyna's family suddenly did that.
I am so sorry, as I realize it must be a whole lot worse for you.

To think almost the exact same thing is happening again just sickens me to the core.

oldnproud, thank you for your kind thoughts. It must be the same for the many others, like me who have come from families affected/displaced by the russians. I feel shaken to my core. I am having to go outside and commune with nature, which reminds me of the cycle that does not stop, that nurtures and re-grows.

The russian legacy sickens me, that they could `play` at bombing nuclear plants, that they could disturb and release huge amounts of nuclear material, from chernobyl waste, which will spread around the globe before it settles on soil which will be rendered useless and will be unable to grow food. It has become about a lot more than nuclear weapons. It is about slow starvation and radiation sickness

And all because of one evil madman's ego - though those in his inner circle must be as bad. Otherwise, surely one of them would do the only thing that might put a stop to this dreadful and totally unjustified situation that threatens the whole world, by killing Putin right now.

Such a person would become a hero, and I live in hope that he or she exists.

sad

It sounds like you seek calm - if that is the right word - in the same way as me. I am spending increasing amounts of time out in the woods and fields at the moment.

After attending those 1 in 5s - I joined CND.

Just thinking - funny old world. If you’d asked me to speculate who would be most likely to threaten nuclear war my guess would have been someone like North Korea, I somehow would never have thought a mature nuclear country like Russia would be so insane.

Wrong wasn’t I?

This isn’t intended to frighten anyone but listening to someone on tv a couple of nights ago brought it home how disastrous just one nuclear strike anywhere in the world would be. It was stated that only two would be required to finish us all due to the fallout. Today’s weapons are far, far more powerful than what was dropped on Hiroshima and the fallout would reach every corner of the planet.

Whilst Putin doesn’t appear to be a man that would countenance defeat and, therefore, more likely to press the button, so to speak, he is reportedly terrified of catching Covid so obviously doesn’t want to die. He must realise that taking that step would be committing suicide.

Did you take part in the 1 in 5 programme?

That tells us all we need to know.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Mar-22 08:46:31

Unverified. If you find it difficult to believe remember that Putin has always seen Stalin as the guide to his action. How many million Russians did Stalin kill?

“Worrying reports: Russians might have pointed multiple rocket-launching systems in the Russian border village of Popovka towards their own territory. Knowing the barbaric nature of Russian actions we fear a false flag operation might be prepared in order to accuse Ukraine.”

Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday morning told Europe to "wake up" to the threat of Putin and urged "anybody who knows the word Chernobyl" to help prevent another nuclear disaster on the continent.

Boris Johnson, Joe Biden and Justin Trudeau called Mr Zelensky early this morning to be briefed on the fire.

Boris said he would seek an emergency UN Security Council meeting in a bid for a ceasefire.

Won’t happen but I suppose for the record going forward, the right questions have to be asked.

Warships gathering within range of Odessa. BBC News showing the destruction the Russian Army are doing to Ukraine. Even if it was all to stop today, which I doubt, the poor Ukrainians are faced with a massive rebuilding project to get their lives and country back to where it was before that madman, Putin, invaded. Very heartening to see so many German people holding up placards inviting people into their homes. They outnumbered the refugees. I thought Clive Myrie looked shattered last night.

karmalady Fri 04-Mar-22 07:22:05

easterly and south easterly winds prevail over that part of ukraine. Horrifying potential. Glimmer of hope in that the reactor is still ok. Right now the wind is west and north west. Winds going towards bellarus and russia. Nuclear fallout would affect all of us on this earth, no-one is safe. Maybe now china and india will wake up to the evil nuclear threat

Ukraine says Russian forces seized Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

Whitewavemark2 Fri 04-Mar-22 06:58:11

Ukraine is shutting down its nuclear reactors because they are coming under attack by Russia.

I’m not clear how that would stop a radiation leak though?

Does anyone know?
