Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

Here's a map of Europe. Designed for kids, which is probably quite appropriate.

How do you propose they get to the Baltic States with Belarus in the way?

DaisyAnne Sun 27-Feb-22 10:41:37

I wasn't saying you are trying to do it Urmsontgran but that it is what comes over as your idea of success. However, I shouldn't have said it. As we can see, it distracts from the discussion about Ukraine

Thermobaric weapons are considered the worse form of military weapon. The only thing worse is nuclear. It causes appalling destruction.

Thermobaric weapons are on trucks moving towards Kiev. If they are deployed, it will be a humanitarian catastrophe of our worst fears.

MaizieD Sun 27-Feb-22 11:14:46

Thermobaric weapons work by sucking the oxygen from the surrounding air to feed their explosive power. Anyone within range has the air sucked from their lungs instantly and dies.

I fear for the population of Kyiv; they have no protection against them.

I think most people fleeing Ukraine will want to be in the Baltic states as they will want to return at some stage to reclaim their properties if possible.

I think the Baltic States will be quite fearful themselves at the moment.
We were there when they were having the 5th anniversary celebrations to commemorate the day when the Russians left. It doesn't seem that long ago.

Has the been confirmed?

Are any other sources reporting the same?

Or is it just Mr.Putins fake news propaganda machine in action to put the Ukrainian PM under pressure to give in?

MaizieD Sun 27-Feb-22 12:00:22

There are reports that Belarus forces are preparing to move into Ukraine. On the day that Belarusians vote in a referendum to allow, or not allow, Russia to site nuclear weapons in Belarus.

Zelensky has made a video to appeal to them to vote against... Probably a forlorn hope..

I have been on to @carolecadwalla, there seem to be several folks making the same assumptions based on a grainy video of Russian Trucks, let’s hope that they are wrong.

Kali with respect you do seem obsessed by Brexit. You manage to shoehorn it into most of the political threads.

Because it is hugely and directly relevant here. Simple.

As said, because it is so relevant to the situation today.

Even Cameron, in 2016 during the Campaign for Brexit- warned that it could lead to destabilisation and work in Putin's favour

I saw it reported by a Ukranian source last night.

There's a video posted here. Not having any knowledge at all of armaments I have no idea what I am seeing, just depending on the twitter post.
Reverse image search shows it has not been posted anwhere before today.

That looks like the video MaizieD no doubt our military sources and those of our Allies will be scrutinising this.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:48:47

I have heard it mentioned a few times on the news channels but ignored it, until today, when it seems that the heavy armaments are now being wheeled in.

Carol Cadwalladr never as far as I am aware publishes false facts, in fact she has been so right about Banks, and masses of other stuff relating to the white supremicists when people have poo- pood her.

I trust her judgement.

That of course is with the caveat as I keep saying that this is war so everything must be viewed with scepticism.

Let us fervently hope that these weapons won’t be used.

Let us fervently hope that these weapons won’t be used.

If they are, we are all involved.

The rest of the world cannot be bystanders any longer, providing armaments will not be enough…

Katie59 Sun 27-Feb-22 12:53:47

If it’s true then that is a bad escalation, maybe as a reaction to large quantities on NATO weaponry accumulating in other countries.
There is no need to have a major military force for a humanitarian mission

You are not dealing with a rational enemy, so you can’t apply rational assumptions.

Actually there is need for NATO to have weaponry for humanitarian missions

First and foremost it will be defensive, as in land to air missiles to shoot down enemy planes who stray into neutral airspace and threaten the safety of refugee camps and escape routes.

Please stop making excuses for Vladimir Putin.

tickingbird Sun 27-Feb-22 13:13:53

I’ve just donated to the Mail online’s Ukrainian refugee fund. I did it by bank transfer but there are other ways. Regardless of anyone’s opinion of The Mail I trust that the money will go where necessary.

I very much hope so, too.

But the weapons exist and I'm sure that Putin would have no hesitation in using them.

I've searched 'thermobaric weapons' on twitter. It's more than just Carole Cadwalldr reporting on them. One of The Times journalists refers to a briefing about them on 25th Feb.

They are interviewing an expert on this on Sky and there doesn't seem to be any doubt about what the Russians are bringing forward.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Feb-22 13:47:12

God it gets worse. Russia on highest nuclear alert, but there is a glimmer there are talks going ahead between Ukraine and Russia.

Everything crossed.

Aveline Sun 27-Feb-22 13:48:56

Red Cross, UNICEF and Action Aid are all appealing for donations to help in Ukraine. After seeing people handing in bandages, plasters, aspirins and even old crutches to a hospital I chose to contribute to the Red Cross one although I'm sure they will all help.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 27-Feb-22 13:51:33

Sky news is reporting that Ukraine and Russia set to hold negotiations at Belarusian-Ukraine border says office of President Zelensky.

I am praying for a peaceful end to this inhuman invasion.
