Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

My point is that people here have relatives friends who live in Ukraine. They know of the horror that is happening there and it is on the news all the time. They don't need to see pictures (that are fake anyway) that emphasise that.
My heart goes out to the people in Ukraine and the dreadful situation that is unfolding.
That was my point!

My point is that it is difficult to verify what is true and what is fake right now. With the situation changing so rapidly there is bound to be lots of information coming quickly with very little opportunity to verify whether it is true or not.

Then we shouldn't repeat any of it.

Simples.

OK.

We've had a post about the reasons for the invasion which most people, but not all, saw through straight away. Dangerous stuff, as some people who are not even posting here will obviously believe it and think that there's things we are not being told.

Then on the other had, we had a piece of completely false information about the fall of Kiev which stood for at least 12 hours and is probably still there. It would have been distressing for anyone reading it who had friends and family there, or even people who have links to Ukraine.

I have no time at all for the "I thought it was correct, sorry" approach. Its our responsibility not to post things that are misleading and distressing without finding out if they are true or not. Becuase that's how fake news starts.

Ah I see. Well, I’m afraid that this will happen and perhaps get worse the longer the war goes on.

It happened throughout the referendum campaign with new posters saying outrageous stuff - one even having the username of Mair - and it completely stopped the day after the referendum.

Make what you will of that.

I think we need to be prepared for the same thing again, and maybe use the same language the Snake Island martyrs used this week. Not to misguided posters but new posters certainly, who post are clearly posting such false information.

I note that Tamayra has not returned to defend their outrageous claim about why Russia invaded Ukraine. A claim which was started on Twitter (wonder which country was behind that!) and since proved to be untrue.

Can I make a plea that this thread stays on point and doesn't descend into attacks on individual posters.

This is one of Donald Trump's. He is using this conflict to attack Joe Biden.

Many reputable news sources are showing alleged fake pictures/videos. This is a war situation where propaganda is rife. It happened during both world wars and its happening now. Nothing new about that.

Aveline Sat 26-Feb-22 10:09:04

Did you see the video of the brave Ukrainian woman (a Gran?) confronting a Russian soldier and giving him sunflower seeds to put in his pocket so that when he dies/is killed at least something good will grow from it?
Chilling stuff. The Russian soldier didn't know how to handle her spirited resistance. Magnify that by the population of Ukraine and Putin will be given something to think about.

Volver if I was you, I’d stop stirring the pot. There’s enough trouble on Ukraine, we don’t need this on Gransnet. I’m sure we all agree about the awfulness of the situation.

I'm not stirring the pot. I'm asking people to have some responsibility.

Nobody needs to answer me and nobody needs to ride to anybody's defence.

Just hear what I'm saying.

I am in awe of this man.

“Putin’s main achievement in the last 48 hours is making President Zelensky a global hero. His quote to Americans offering to evacuate him “I need ammunition, not a ride”.

For goodness sake lavendermine, what a silly and unnecessary comment about Urms’ picture.
I for one thought it perfectly summed up the horror of what is happening in Ukrainian.

Pictures convey such a powerful image don’t they, far more so than words, and, apart from that, none of us have any right to try to dictate what others can or cannot post.

But it didn't sum up the horror of what's happening in Ukraine. The picture was at least 7 years old. Even the BBC is running with a piece about faked pictures.

I have no doubt that the situation in Ukraine is horrific, but let's stick to the facts. In the end, propaganda just undermines the truth.

No need for Putin worry
Germany and and Italy have vetoed Swift Global bank Payment sanctions.

I find it strange how Boris Johnson gets lambasted for Uk Russian dealings when France and Germany have a joint Russian gas Pipe line .

Uk has North Sea Gas and smaller percentage from Norway.

I'm sorry but since when has purchasing energy to keep your citizens warm been wrong? There is a huge difference between securing energy supplies for your country and giving protection to foreign gangsters in return for paying sums of money into your political party's coffers aka corruption.

Oh dear. People seem very irritable this morning.

Deep breath everyone.

This thread is beginning to go the way if the others.

Shame.

Would someone like to explain to me the difference between false information about why Putin attacked Ukraine and false information about whether the Ukrainians have been beaten?

We may be able to if you expanded on your question and made it clear what you mean

laverdermine -Do we really need another outbreak of unnecessarily nasty personal attacks?

Urmstongran - we rarely agree on politics. Maybe it’s the northern girl thing but please, don’t get that hair shirt out again. I’m sure we are all old and wise enough to scroll past an image if it upsets us.

This is all so shocking and upsetting and images are widely available and televised so I agree that there is no need for personal attacks.
The world is bad enough without an outbreak of hostilities on GN - surely apologising more than once is enough lavendermine and others?

I don't agree with Urmonstongran's politics either, but this seems to be nothing to do with that - it is becoming more like a vendetta against her for other reasons.

maddyone Sat 26-Feb-22 09:54:23

Urmston. please don’t worry about the misinformation you posted yesterday. You apologised when you realised. You don’t need to find a hair shirt to wear. There’ll be a lot of misinformation circulating at this time, and as I understand it, your husband told you that it had been on SkyNews. Normally a reputable source, but this is not normally.

Tamayra

There’s much more to this than we realise
Ukraine is a seat of heavy corruption
Puts n is taking out Bioweapon bases there. Dig deeper my friends

WHAT?
I’m afraid I wouldn’t believe that until I see it on some reputable news source. Where did you hear that?
Of course they’ll be all sorts of rumours whilst this tragic situation is unfolding.

Listen to your common sense and what you know to be true. Then understand that the post is crap.
