Seems like the measly sanctions haven’t frightened Putin, surprise surprise. What will be our circus of a government here’s response? We need to build bridges with the EU and have a combined response with the US.That would mean a different government here, I fear, as this lot have burnt too many bridges. Can’t wait to see Liz Truss in her fur hat issuing threats.

More pathetic garbage about Brexit being the result of Russian interference.

Of course it was not for many Leave voters- but it was for Putin, for sure. Clear as a bell. He had to divide Europe.

Dom Cummings spent several years in Russia in some mystery job before returning to influence the tories.

varian Thu 24-Feb-22 18:23:33

I wonder why those who insist that Russia did not effect the EU referendum explain why RT relentlessly promoted Farage, why Facebook was bombarded with pro-Leave messages originating in Russia on 23rd June 2016, and who gave Arron Banks the £8 million+ to promote leave. Banks has a Russian wife. Dominic Cummings spent three years in Russia doing what exactly?

There is question that Putin interfered with Brexit.

That should read..”there is NO. question that Putin interfered with the Brexit referendum”

So, did Russia ultimately shape the outcome of the Brexit referendum? Given that the result was exceptionally close, and that if just one in fifty voters had felt differently when they entered the polling booth on June 23, 2016, the result would have been different, the Kremlin operation could well have tipped the balance

I can only hope Putin is taken out internally.

"Our AC has always said that he has had a wonderful fulfilling career and knew what they signed up for, they take the peace keeping with the wars. "

yes and I second that grannygravy, my dd was a major married to a captain, now civilians. It is the career they chose and what they were paid to do

I would like to send a virtual hug to all GN posters who have family in our Armed Forces.

They are some of, if not the best trained and disciplined forces in the world. They will do whatever is asked of them.

Our AC has always said that he has had a wonderful fulfilling career and knew what they signed up for, they take the peace keeping with the wars.

Please spare a thought for us in these most difficult days…

Absolutely. And those calling for war are rarely the ones whose sons and daughters will be called upon to risk their lives for it. Yes, they know what they signed up for - but it doesn't stop the worry and heartache for their families.

Iam 64 I agree with your post.
I'm really frightened to think that we might be facing another '38 with another power-hungry megalomaniac.
The only hope is that Russia and China end up falling out and undermining eachother. Then they can fight as much as they want.

Putin has warned the west that if we interfere we can expect greater consequences than we have ever faced in history. He means he will use nuclear weapons.

That was my first thought but they are now taking over Chernobyl so I wonder if, in some way, he has plans there.

Grandmashe43 Thu 24-Feb-22 16:39:56

Very worrying times, Russia and China together,(and I’m sure they are in this together)put the world in a very precarious position.

Iam64 Thu 24-Feb-22 15:35:52

Silverlining48, I agree about the 50’s 60’s fear of Russia. It’s also frighteningly reminiscent of 1938, with a deranged megalomaniac in charge of a country . I agree with other posters that he wants to recreate the old ussr.

Nezumi65 Thu 24-Feb-22 15:20:25

Russian interference has unfortunately destabilised the U.K. & made us weaker. That is clear - so these are definite long term aims.

London is known as the laundry in certain parts of Russia. The government really need to clear out all the dirty money from the U.K. now (they won’t though.)

Terrible times. I’m not sure, despite the megalomania, that invading a country belonging to NATO would make much sense for Putin, whereas invading Ukraine does.

I see some (150?) senior Russian officials have publicly opposed the invasion. Brave people - it must put their freedom and lives at some risk to do that.

silverlining48 Thu 24-Feb-22 14:42:13

This is taking me back to the 50s /60s when we lived in fear of the USSR. The Cold War , Cuba, those were frightening times.

AGAA4 Thu 24-Feb-22 14:34:53

*Maddyone" I also am sure Ukraine is only the first of Putin's goals. He wants to regain the USSR and will go after those countries bordering Ukraine. As they are in NATO the west will become involved which is very worrying.
Putin has been planning this for a long time and has built up resources to keep Russia going while he tries to take over other countries.

I haven't seen the “left wing blaming Ukraine” - where is the evidence? I see Farage and Trump praising Putin.

Where?
