Conscription in UK?

Any possibility of this? I ask because my daughter (41 and childless) getting worried. Here in Italy not a squeak, nor in the rest of Europe - or we'd have heard.

No, shes never been with any Armed Forces. I don't know why she insists. She now says that two Polish colleagues in the hospital where she works hae been called bak to their country today to enrol ASAP:

Yes Kali2 drones and cyber warfare is far better than using the young men and sometimes women of any country as ^cannon fodder^

But it will the the civilians who will be killed- children, babies, the elderly and the vulnerable, whole families, in their homes, hospitals and care homes ...

I do think that it was better to have 2 armies in a field fighting each other- and leaving civilians.

When my Dad was alive he put everything that seemed to be on a downward slide, teenagers, crime figures, the length of boy's hair, unemployment, lousy Governments, anti-social behaviour etc all down to there being no more Conscription. His stock phrase was 'He needs a bl***dy good spell in the Army'. He may have had a point. 3 years in the Forces learning to drive, being taught new skills, being part of a team and accepting discipline and orders. Too many these days have little opportunity after leaving school, sometimes with few qualifications and mooch aimlessly through life often ending up on the wrong side of the law.

Those over 40 are generally considered to be over-conscription age, except in exceptional circumstances, which these aren't from a conscription point of view. When mass conscription occurs, it tends to be 18-25 years old first

As things stand at the present, unless she has rare and exceptional skills that would be desperatelyneeded in current circumstances, she probably would be considered too old even to volunteer with the territorial army.

Ex-service personnel are on a reserve list and would be called back first before the conscription of young people.

They would be on the list for the years with possible extensions up to age 58, I think.

Anything that reduces the number of armed forces being killed and maimed has to be better. Taking out a dictator with a drone operated by someone thousands of miles away, for instance.
The real future of warfare is probably cyber warfare though.

Why should the armed forces take on the responsibility of dealing with disaffected youth and what good would one years square bashing do them.

If a years national service is thought necessary or advisable for school leavers why not treat them like a home based peace corps, going out and oing useful jobs in the community. - except that might put other people out of work.

Essentially it is an idea that cannot stand up to much scrutiny.

I don't think that a year of national service would do most youngsters any harm though.

I pity any Military Instructor attempting to get a youth who does not want to, do what he/she has been ordered to do. It isn't like 20+ years ago when you were bullied into submission.

Highly unlikely. We have very good armed forces in this country, although with a pool of reservists and the Territorial Army to call upon if necessary too.

No I would not have thought so. Reserves will be first in any case.

I can't see that happening. There may be, if things get worse for the UK, a call for volunteers to join the Reserve Forces if the people have skills that are needed, e.g. medics, cyber, engineers, pilots but we are a long way off that. Conscripted military who don't want to serve their country will be impossible to train and too much of a distraction for the serving personnel.
