Sorry to report that @ukhomeoffice is refusing entry to Ukrainians at Paris Gare du Nord seeking to join family in UK because they don’t have a visa. And not being helped to apply for a visa.

Thanks for the link, Josieann
I saw him speak in the House of Lords the other day. Still impressive.

Oh, and he is my uncle!
And my MIL knew his Mother (they were on a committee together)
We must be nearly related or something ?

Callistemon21 Tue 01-Mar-22 23:10:57

Yes, we think that's what it is, we were just being pedantic.

Nana3 Tue 01-Mar-22 22:06:37

I'm thinking 'adult parent' might be parent of an adult. Apologies if someone said this already.

The Rest is Politics first one is to be released tomorrow.

I didn’t realise I’d got podcasts on my iPad ( I usually listen to the BBC Sounds ones). Just listened to the trailer. As a technophobe, by subscribing do I have to pay to listen to them?

DaisyAnne Tue 01-Mar-22 20:40:47

That must be what they meant Callistemon grin

I am not wishing to be pedantic but what is an "Adult Parent" or, rather who isn't?

I suppose if we're being pedantic a parent under the age is 18 isn't an adult parent.

DaisyAnne Tue 01-Mar-22 19:41:13

Sorry, that was a bit random. The Prime Ministers spokes person said "The extension will cover adult parents, grandparents, children over 18 and siblings, in addition to the immediate family members, and you can expect the Home Secretary will come to the house afternoon to set out further details on that."

Yvette Cooper has just pointed out in parliament that, contrary to what the government seem to be saying, the elderly woman at Gare du Nord is still not being allowed to travel to the U.K. to be with her daughter.

And the reply to Yvette Coopers question if she could come in was a straight "Yes" from Patel.

She was adamant, wasn't she.
Perhaps she'llll send her chauffeur driven car to pick her up.

Is that what you are calling his podcast Josieann. If so I have now got it and will be able to see it on the TV. Thank you.

I agree many of the current members should be voted into an upper house even if we change to an elected one. They are less partisan and very knowledgeable.

Where do I find the David Owen Podcast? I'm trying to put the new ones coming from the intriguing combination of Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell and called "The Rest is Politics" onto my Fire Stick so I can watch it on TV. I haven't a handy grandchild to help so I am struggling. If anyone can advise, I would like to have both on the Fire Stick.

….I’ll check out the podcasts…

MayBee70 Tue 01-Mar-22 18:40:31

I saw him the other day. That’s why I carried on watching!

Ive started watching the House of Lords when it’s on parliament today. So refreshing to listen to people speaking in such a calm, sensible, adult way with no shouting and jeering. I know people think the House of Lords isn’t very democratic but in recent years they have actually been our last line of defence in protecting democracy.
I agree MayBee and several of the members have very in depth knowledge of Russia and an insightful understanding of Putin himself. If you are interested, you can listen to Lord Owen's podcasts and his speech last week. Being a once Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, and having had dealings with Yeltsin and Putin, he uses his analytical technique and skill as a neuro physician to unravel Putin's mind, and warn where things might be heading.
(Oh, and he is my uncle!)

I don’t sssume anything Whitewave, but to call a minister evil is I think wrong,, there is a lot of misinformation and judgements by people that seem to have the answers that the world hasn’t.
A mother is still a mother at what ever age her child is and wherever they are.

I have emailed my Tory MP telling him how ashamed I am that the UK cannot live up to the humanitarian standards of our erstwhile partners in the European union.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 01-Mar-22 17:23:38

Patel has done a partial climb down after pressure from Tory back benchers.

She still isn’t budging on the visa issue.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 01-Mar-22 13:08:50

Just had a reply from my MP supporting giving Ukrainian’s safe passage.

He said that he’s never had so much mail on one subject.

If your town was made uninhabitable for a few months, would want to
1. stay with strangers in a very friendly neighboring overcrowded town speaking another language or
2. go to family, even if it is a few miles away, but with modern travel could be covered in a few hours.
These people are respectable people who had decent lives two weeks ago, like you are living now.

When Patel answered "yes" to the question about whether the elderly lady the commentator on Channel 4 News explained why that answer is "not exactly true". But then, when was the last time a Tory minister told the truth. If they told me tomorrow was Tuesday, I would have to check.

The lady is not a mother because her daughter is over sixteen. There is an age limit on being a mother didn’t to know that. shock

allsorts you can’t make assumptions that people are not doing all those things unless you have evidence.

Who knows how much money people have contributed or offers of help etc.
