Dreadful floods in Australia

We are having the worst floods for many years in Queensland and North New South Wales. Several have died already and several places have been evacuated. It looks truly shocking.

While our attention is on Ukraine, other stuff is happening - climate change continues.

It sounds as if it has been a rotten summer. Watching video pictures from my family it looks more like a monsoon.

TillyTrotter Sun 27-Feb-22 08:59:53

Very sorry to hear that nanna8 . There seems to be no let-up to the disasters the world is suffering and lives are being sadly lost.
I sincerely wish for better times to come soon to Queensland & NSW. ?

Saw you yesterday was the wettest day since 1974. Stay safe, thinking of you all. ❤

Stay safe all.

Not for the faint-hearted!

Our DD2 and SiL are in Brisbane. The nightmare they were hoping to avoid has happened as their house has been flooded.
DD showed us what damage has been done via a FaceTime call with us and I wept for them thinking of the massive cleanup ahead before their home is habitable again.

Fortunately, SiL’s parents, who live in another area of the city, which hasn’t been affected with flooding, are willingly housing them. Friends and family here and in Australia are doing what we can to support them and reassure them. DD has told us their local council have been wonderful and so well organised with their plans for cleaning up. Their insurers have been so reassuring also.

I was going to mention this, thanks for starting a thread nanna8

For all those in the Brisbane and surrounding areas, and those who have relatives there, I hope that they are safe.
It was described as a rain bomb. At least a metre of rain fell in a very short time according to DD.

I am so sorry to hear about your DD2 and SIL, Kalu, it must be dreadful. Thank goodness they are safe and that they are insured.

DD said that people she knows found that they were wading waist deep in water in their houses; luckily she is on higher ground and is hoping to get out later this week to help some of her friends who have been flooded out.
She sent us a lot of photos, it looks dreadful. She said her friends saw a body floating down the river near their house and were very distressed.

Sending best wishes to your DD and SIL, Kalu and anyone else badly affected.

We lived in Brisbane in the 70s and experienced the awful 1974 floods when the Brisbane River broke its banks. Houses broken from stilts floated down the river and through the suburbs, along with bodies of dead animals, it was dreadful and my heart goes out to those experiencing this devastation. It is stressful, it is sad and it is awful. The camaraderie that comes from it is wonderful. Neighbours and the armed forces worked tirelessly to clean up and I’m sure that will happen again.
The waters will recede, the mud will be scrubbed from the walls, the sun will shine and the grass will grow again. Queenslanders are tough cookies and always optimistic.
Good luck to all going through it in Queensland and in NSW.

Kalu Mon 28-Feb-22 15:06:04

DD is a pragmatic tough cookie and getting on with it. SiL has been making good use of their canoe helping others. Both have a very, can do attitude and now, the initial shock is over, proactive working alongside neighbours.

They both made the evening news as they were filmed loading up their cars with anything of sentimental value and important papers which have been taken to SiL’s house for safety.

Kalu Mon 28-Feb-22 15:06:48

SiL’s parent’s house. ??‍♀️

Kalu Mon 28-Feb-22 15:11:10

Meant to add Calli. Thank you and I hope your DD continues to be ok. ? What a dreadful experience for our DDs.

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Feb-22 15:13:10

Thanks Kalu
I hope they have bottled water because apparently the water supplies could be contaminated.

We have received many upsetting photos and drone images from DS and his little family 8 miles from Brisbane centre. They are flooded, the level in the garden reaching the trampoline base and flooding through from front to back with the street impassable.
I was prompted to get in touch with them by the 6 year old's i-message overnight - we had to leave for a bit of rain ?

DS said he had hoped Ukraine had replaced their flooding news over here and didn't want to worry us.

I told him never to underestimate the grannies' global network here!!

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Feb-22 16:15:08

It was mentioned on the news for about 30 seconds at lunch-time, ixion.

ixion Mon 28-Feb-22 16:17:07

Thank you! I'll watch out at 6pm.

Katie59 Mon 28-Feb-22 17:08:28

My sister lives in Brisbane where the floods are, about 10 yrs ago she moved to higher ground above the flood level so she should be safe.
The city floods regularly on a massive scale most houses are on stilts and living space is on the first floor, a “Tinnie” - small boat is a household requirement, along with a “Barbie” when the power goes off
Power cuts are annoying because no air conditioning, in that climate it’s really unpleasant. Sympathy with those that have lost loved ones, tens of thousands will be affected

seacliff Mon 28-Feb-22 17:23:04

My son is in Brisbane Central right by the river in the town centre but in a third floor apartment. They are anticipating they might have to leave as the bottom two floors are flooded now, there is no power and no nearby shops open. He is also recovering from having covid.

Apparently on Mount Glorious near Brisbane the other day, there was 1 and a half metres of rain fell in just one hour. !!

The Wivenhoe Dam is so full that they have to let some water out to save it. However that then flows in to Central Brisbane making flooding there even worse

LauraNorderr Mon 28-Feb-22 18:51:32

Thinking of all you worried grans with family in and around Brisbane.

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Feb-22 19:09:13

Barely mentioned on the ITV News this evening except a 10 second slot as part of a series of 10 second older stories of floods and fire demonstrating Climate Change.

Callistemon21 Mon 28-Feb-22 19:11:49

The Wivenhoe Dam is so full that they have to let some water out to save it.
It was reported as at 180% recommended capacity. They will have to release some as, if the dam wall went, it would be a humanitarian disaster.

I don't know why Australia doesn't build more dams as they are often experiencing water shortages too.

GrannyGravy13 Mon 28-Feb-22 19:22:47

Hope all your families stay safe and dry ?

crazyH Mon 28-Feb-22 19:32:24

Thinking of all affected. I have a dear friend in Toowomba , messaged her yesterday. They are fine. I have a few friends in Australia - glad to say, they are all ok ?
