No,I wouldn’t open my house to strangers though I would donate provided it is to a cause that is honest and won’t salt the money away for themselves or spend it in admin. We were very disappointed to find a considerable amount of money donated when they had the tsunamis never reached those poor people. I was more than disappointed, I was ropeable.

Haiti too, I was more than angry.

I find this post curious. Is your government asking citizens to start housing refuges? If so, just Ukrainians, or other refugees as well?

No CanadianGran our government is not asking us to take refugees into our homes. Some are saying they would take Ukrainian refugees into their homes, maybe they'll extend that invitation to refugees from other worn torn countries too.

^No virtue signalling from me as I have not told anyone what I am or not, doing or prepared to do^
??
But you said -
Will you open your door and host Ukrainian refugees- mothers, grand-mothers and their children? *I will*

It must be just to confuse us.

GG13 'The Ukrainian Ambassador to London has said that the majority of the fleeing population wish to stay in Poland or nearby Countries and asked U.K. for economic help for these refugee stations which is being provided.'

yes, Raab has said the same. And that may well be the case, but how about not deciding for them and letting THEM make the choice, not the Ambassador, Raab or you for that matter.

Makes me feel sick to know Raab's father was a Jew who fled the Sudendeten lands given to Nazi Germany. So many second generation immigrants on that fron bench, without a heart or any acknowledgement for the plight of their parents and grand-parents, and how they were welcomed in the UK.

In answer to the question - no, I won't.
Having a big house doesnt make a person more charitable, it just means they have a bigger house.

Oh ain't that the truth. Bravo to you for being brutally honest- but how sad.

No virtue signalling from me as I have not told anyone what I am or not, doing or prepared to do.

But I was wondering, with all the wringing of hands on GN re Ukraine, if people would actually be prepared to DO something for real, in real life, apart from donating to Unicef or the Red Cross (or other)- as I have witnessed last few days some incredible people, and not even with big houses, prepared to do so much, and share what little they have. I am amazed at the kindness out there (and yes, it seems those with the most are usually (not always) the ones prepared to do the least. Sadly.

more than 200,000 ukranians are likely to be joining family in the uk. We have not been asked to house anyone but I do love the warmth and kind heartedness of those people who are offering to help. It is uplifting

just quietly getting on with helping in whatever way they can and donating what they can
How true.

The Red Cross can get aid to where it's needed.

Thanks for posting the link, Shandy

Shandy57 Tue 01-Mar-22 18:10:56

For anyone that wants to donate, the Red Cross are now asking for money rather than physical donations.

We could put up some Ukrainian family and would be happy to do so. How do we tell Pritti Patel?

People are doing that everyday, without any comment.
Putting extra bits and bobs into the food bank collection points, passing on things that will help those worse off.

Yes, they are without the need to virtue signal or demand to know what others are doing.

Just quietly getting on with helping in whatever way they can and donating what they can.

I would if we had a house big enough but we dont. I think there will be plenty space in 10 Downing Street.

Dont be so ridiculous. You could say that about the EU buildings. Neither instance can or will happen.

Maybe those luxury apartments in London which Russian oligarchs use to launder money could be seized and used to house refugees.

As they are probably always empty what a good idea.

Don't know what happened to my emoji of the Ukrainian flag....

The Polish priest in our neighbouring parish is organising emergency supplies, he has been very moved by the response. He is asking especially for medical supplies, blankets, torches and batteries. My parish and associated schools are fundraising.

I visited our local Marian Shrine today to pray at the Ukrainian Memorial. Flowers, candles and messages of support have been placed there in recent days. God help those poor people. ???

karmalady Tue 01-Mar-22 17:10:55

I believe it must help the refugees a little bit psychologically if they know that people have been kind enough to send what they might need. They are more than worse off than most here, they have fled with nothing apart from perhaps a small roll -along case and will mainly be woman and children and old men. Vans and I think a lorry will be leaving here for Poland in a few days

GrannyGravy13 Tue 01-Mar-22 16:16:43

There are collection points all over the U.K. for clothes, toiletries, baby basics etc. Kali2

Is this a government thing?
Are we being asked to take in refugees if we can?
I’m just wondering what’s the point of saying you would if you’ll never actually do it?
I mean, are you going to wait at train stations, ports etc with a placard?

Well, Switzerland's stance on this crisis has been neutrality so far so I don't know if refugees would be allowed into there anyway.

They have not frozen Russian assets held in banks there nor decided upon sanctions as yet although they may.

But it faces growing pressure to side clearly with the West against Moscow and adopt punitive European Union sanctions. The government had so far said only that it will not let Switzerland be used as a platform to circumvent EU sanctions.
Reuters 6 hours ago.

How wrong cn you be

Switzerland backs full EU sanctions against Russia

it has dropped visa requirements and has made all train travel to and through Switzerland free for all Ukrainians fleeing.

And yes, people are driving to the border, in Poland, Rumania, etc, and picking up strangers- women and children grand-mothers. Others are offering to host strangers on Facebook sites, and other media, all over Europe, and beyond. Offering to pay for flights even. It is heart warming, and has restored a little bit of faith in humanity.

Others are collecting clothing, sanitary products and bedding, food, babystuff and food for pets, and more. Wonderful.
