Kremlin-linked oligarchs in London

Last week, the Center for American Progress, a US thinktank close to President Biden, warned that “uprooting Kremlin-linked oligarchs will be a challenge given the close ties between Russian money and the United Kingdom’s ruling Conservative party, the press, and its real estate and financial industry”.

This war by Putin, has been taking place since 2014. Propaganda and working to divide his “enemy” by the instability he has caused in the USA and Europe.

We must learn very quickly how this propaganda has destabilised Europe. High profile figures like Farage and banks provided a platform for the propaganda, as well as Facebook, twitter, and even social media sites like GN. Does anyone remember all the “strange” posters before the referendum who disappeared the day after? One even taking the name of the murderer of Joe Cox.

His aim to split Europe has partially worked with brexit. The Tory party is the only party in the U.K. who was prepared to deliver this split, and they were helped by constant funding from Putin.

This has to stop. The U.K. must wise up and stop being putins stooges.

To take money and tacitly support the enemy by failing to do anything in a goodly time is the act of a traitor.

I think that by invading Ukraine President Putin has united Europe and the rest of the world, not sure that was his ultimate game plan.

Abramovich said he will give the money from the sale of Chelsea to 'all' victims of this war. He should of just said the Ukranian people, I might of believed him then.

Just to reinforce the message

Some 'notable' Tories who've received Putin's money - or "money from Russian sources":

Jeremy Hunt £98,972 (tipped as a future Tory leader)

Brandon Lewis £62,500

Gavin Williamson £30,000

John Whittingdale £11,000

Liam Fox £10,000

Rishi Sunak £6,000

What I want to know is 'What do they do with this money?'

(And why did Rishi Sunak, of all people need £6,000?)

Its not just politicians and royalty who have been influenced - a lot of people in this country & others who like to listen in echo chambers on Brexit, anti vax, immigration , Trump. etc etc have opinions fueled and inflamed by the disinformation coming out from the Russian troll farms.

Its not just twitter and facebook that are trolled - daily mail comments/ reddit etc all have significant contributions from troll farms - basically anywhere with a large readership.

One of the strategies for years has been to cause dissent.

People need to be more critical of where they get information from , content they are reading and which opinions they are listening to.

SaraC Thu 03-Mar-22 11:24:32

Thank you ladies for some excellent ‘on point’ information. It’s despicable that Johnson is giving a month’s ‘grace period’ to Russian oligarchs and those connected to them - what message does that give? Action needs to be taken NOW to impound their assets and to deport them. The issues around Tory party bribery can be more fully investigated later.

polnan Thu 03-Mar-22 11:33:31

hmm? now how do I say this?

I am thinking/wondering how complacent we British people have been, had a good lifestyle, well most of us... now showing where it has come from? what will life be like here in the UK
without all these Russian Oligarchs? just wondering..

Neilspurgeon0 Thu 03-Mar-22 11:44:21

I see that the price if 39 pieces of silver has shrunken significantly. £6k to be in hock to a Russian Oligarch. What pigmies we have now in Parliament !!!

I also heard Bill Browder on GBNews. - very impressive. First time I’ve listened to GBN on radio.
How these oligarchs can still function/live/work in London (or as it is known to many Londongrad) eg sell their English Football clubs is beyond me. Get a grip Boris!

Note that Abramovich has still not criticised Putin's barbaric war in Ukraine.

Let the knob sell Chelsea, then seize his equity kerrrchinnng! Thank you very much we'll take care of distribution to victims of Russian vile aggression for you.........that's what you said wasn't it?!

Zoejory Thu 03-Mar-22 12:15:33

Isn't this money all being converted into Bitcoin?

Casdon Thu 03-Mar-22 12:22:38

Abramovich has close family in Russia, even if he had no links with Putin he would of necessity be very wary of criticising Russia’s actions, as would any Russians in the same position. We can’t judge them by our standards. Its clear that he also loves Chelsea, and is trying to protect the future of the club as well as himself. I’m not saying this because I have any sympathy whatsoever for Abramovich, but because we really don’t understand what’s actually going on in such a corrupt regime.

Time to watch McMafia again on BBC iPlayer.

Bossyrossy Thu 03-Mar-22 13:09:09

A lawyer whose clients are Russian oligarchs said on the Today program on Radio 4 this morning, that up until the point that sanctions are applied to them, they are free to move their money out of the country. Perhaps that is why BJ is being slow to name some of his Russian supporters.

madeleine45 Thu 03-Mar-22 13:23:56

once again Johnson dragging his feet allowing his russian friends to salt away their money, but what do you expect from a liar and a cheat. He thinks we will forget the partygate and have short memories but no. Once this appalling situation is sorted we will be back to sort him out. Once we have someone whose word is to be trusted we might have the chance to make some sensible decisions . At the moment our thoughts are concentrated on Ukraine and how to help them. We see the shining example of their president , a politician that honours the name and cares more for his country than his life. Thank goodness we can see what a trustworthy politician looks like.

MaggsMcG Thu 03-Mar-22 13:30:27

Surely anything done before the invasion is not really a problem. It just needs to be dealt with now. Otherwise its a bit hypocritical to put in sanctions. I can never understand why any country lets themselves be infiltrated financially without at least putting something in place to deal with this sort of thing.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 03-Mar-22 13:44:07

Mr.Abramovich purchased Chelsea FC from Mr. Bates in 2003.

Labour were in power, I thought it was them that instigated the Golden Visa Scheme

Any of the oligarchs linked to President Putin who have family in Russia would be extremely foolish to publicly condemn his actions in Ukraine. It would be tantamount to putting a price on their families heads

Not all rich Russians are crooks.

GillT57 Thu 03-Mar-22 14:03:47

Launched in 2008, the “tier 1 investor visa” programme allowed people with at least £2m in investment funds and a UK bank account to apply for residency rights, along with their family. The speed with which applicants were allowed to get indefinite leave to remain was hastened by how much money they planned to invest in the UK: £2m took five years, while £10m shortened the wait to just two.

Investing in the UK, investing in business is one thing, buying a seat in the House of Lords is quite another.

leeds22 Thu 03-Mar-22 14:10:11

Just been watching Simon Reeves in Russia, on iplayer. It was made in 2017 but is particularly interesting now, viewed with hindsight. Episode 3 particularly. Our govt is giving the oligarchs time to sell up in the uk and get their money out, we should be freezing their assets to pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine

Grantanow Thu 03-Mar-22 14:27:41

Pritti Patel should strip Russian oligarchs of UK citizenship and deport them.

MaizieD Thu 03-Mar-22 14:43:50

Not all rich Russians are crooks.

Just most of them... supporters of post Perestroika regimes who were allowed to appropriate highly profitable sections of Russian industry and infrastructure.

Strangely enough, when investigated an awful lot seem to have rather opaque connections with the Putin regime.

This is all tied in with the worship of wealth as an end in itself which we were discussing not so long ago.

Sarnia Thu 03-Mar-22 14:52:08

Allsorts

I heard he was giving everything back to Chelsea. I am no fan of these Oligarch’s and the system that promotes them, it’s obscene, but I suppose they have family in Russia who could be in danger if they openly criticise Putin. He is a madman and very vengeful and unpredictable, in the end family are what matters. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to protect mine.
How can China bail out every Oligarch and for what reason? If China backs Putin all the way it’s even worse than I thought. Ever since the invasion I have felt ill with it, I don’t think I can watch any more, there’s nothing I can do except help financially. Poland have been so loving and helpful, good versus evil.

News seems to be changing frequently but Roman Abramovich is hoping to sell Chelsea FC. The club owes him £1.5b which he will not asked to be repaid and any profit made on the sale of the club will go to help Ukraine. He also has his London properties up for sale. I also read that China, despite appearing all chummy in a recent photograph with Putin, are distancing themselves from the current situation. I haven't seen anything about China bailing out the oligarchs but if true it will be money reasons behind it, I should imagine.

Scottish watchdog looks into Russian donation to Prince Charles charity

Why. It is already being looked into.

So the Centre for American Progress , a liberal think tank , associated with President Obama. Has links with anti semetism, hiding their own paymasters behind a wall of anonymity , truly progressive, well of course as long as it’s British bashing. I agree there is a serious problem with some Russians and Russian money in this country, but pot kettle etc.
