Kremlin-linked oligarchs in London

Last week, the Center for American Progress, a US thinktank close to President Biden, warned that “uprooting Kremlin-linked oligarchs will be a challenge given the close ties between Russian money and the United Kingdom’s ruling Conservative party, the press, and its real estate and financial industry”.

Please can someone tell me if the Russian Ambassador to UK is still here? If he is, why is he or is it diplomatically improper to return him to Russia for some reason? I genuinely would like to know.

I heard he was giving everything back to Chelsea. I am no fan of these Oligarch’s and the system that promotes them, it’s obscene, but I suppose they have family in Russia who could be in danger if they openly criticise Putin. He is a madman and very vengeful and unpredictable, in the end family are what matters. There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to protect mine.
How can China bail out every Oligarch and for what reason? If China backs Putin all the way it’s even worse than I thought. Ever since the invasion I have felt ill with it, I don’t think I can watch any more, there’s nothing I can do except help financially. Poland have been so loving and helpful, good versus evil.

Sorry, I see that vegansrock mentioned this already.

Note that Abramovich has still not criticised Putin's barbaric war in Ukraine.

Abramovich is now selling Chelsea and it’s reported that he is giving part of the proceeds to Ukrainian charities

Johnson has given Russia's second biggest bank, VTB Bank, a 30-day reprieve from UK sanctions.

A top official at the bank, Barin Yucemen, has given the Conservative Party more than £44,000 since 2018.

At PMQs Labour’s Bill Esterson invited Johnson to donate the £2m the Tories had received from Lubov Chernukhin, the wife of Russia’s former deputy minister of finance, to the Ukrainian war effort. Just to show that the Conservatives had nothing to hide. Johnson’s response? To shout and claim it wasn’t all “dirty money” No - because it had been well laundered in Londons laundromat. And why are we allowing Roman Ambramovic to sell Chelsea ? Surely this should be seized . And why are we allowing BJ to lie in parliament?

We need a list of all MPs who have taken money from Russians and they must be forced to explain why.

I keep seeing such lists on twitter but I can't do screen shots. However, if I see another one I'll try to save it as an image and post it on here. There are rather a lot of them.

It’s complicated. This from BBC Wales today.

Conservative MP Stephen Crabb, whose constituency includes Milford Haven, wants all Russian cargo banned from Welsh ports.
A UK government spokesman said current sanctions only affected ships which were owned, controlled or operated by people connected to Russia, "designated persons", or ships which are Russian flagged or registered.
"Ships carrying cargo to or from Russia are not within the scope of the current transport sanctions," the spokesman said.
Preseli Pembrokeshire MP Mr Crabb said it was "simply not acceptable" that Russian cargo could still enter UK waters.

We need to stop buying oil and gas from Russia, as they are using the proceeds to bankroll their army.

A reminder: EU sanctions on Russia came into effect at 4am on Monday.

In the UK, they won’t begin for another month.

Since Boris Johnson came to power, the Tories have accepted nearly two million pounds from prominent Russian-born donors.

Last year Russia expelled Sarah Rainsford , the highly experienced and well regarded BBC Russia correspondent,.

As long as the BBC World service is still accessible in Russia, we can hope that the truth gets through to Russian citizens.

New figures show people in Russia are turning to BBC News in their millions for factual independent information about the war in Ukraine.

Bill Browder said there will be very high interest rates.
I suspect there is more to these loans, although I would imagine that by the time it gets to the borrowing stage Russia will be on its knees and won’t have anything to bargain with.
Shame ?

Do you mean the interest China will charge the oligarchs?
