This is the letter I( have written to mu Tory MP-

"The tragic situation in Ukraine is leading to a huge number of Ukrainians seeking refuge in other countries and their numbers will inevitably increase.

To their credit the European Union have welcomed all Ukrainian refugees who have been offered the chance to stay in any EU country, without having to apply for visas, for up to three years.

To our shame, the UK government is turning its back of the plight of the Ukrainians, demanding visas and only offering safe haven to a very limited number of relatives of UK residents.

Please, please demand that our government does better and is at least as generous and welcoming as all of our erstwhile partners in the European Union."

May I use it Varian? I can't believe it will have any affect on my MP but he needs telling.

I was reading today about Schengen - those countries can accept immigrants without a visa so the process is much simpler.
I think that's right.

I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to support these poor people and welcome them here with open arms.

I wish it was us at the docks and train stations today walking up to people giving them food, prams and a warm welcome.

Anyone who doesn't want this should hope they and their own families never find themselves desperate for sanctuary and peace.

The United Kingdom was never a member of the Schengen Agreement,

Is it something to do with UK being no longer in the Schengen area after leaving the EU?

“Hopefully “and “as soon as possible”. We Should not be hearing those words, just bloody get it done, it’s shameful.

Yes.

What a niggardly country we are...
I don't think we are - the British people have responded generously and would so even more if we had the chance.

A few people seem to have been allowed in having originally been turned away. Perhaps someone more senior has to vet applications and is not always available to do so. Hopefully
any unnecessary bureaucracy will be sorted out as soon as possible

Most other European countries are letting fleeing Ukranians in with no need for visas (i.e an 'application' to enter the country)

The story all over twitter this morning was of the mother with small children who made it to Calais only to be refused passage to the UK and told she would have to go to Paris to get a visa...
If the UK is going to insist on visas they might at least have people in place at the Channel ports and airports to deal with them.

What a niggardly country we are...

Yes and yes.

I don’t even understand what the JS is actually saying. So I’ll just repeat what I said in another thread .Pritti Patel is a disgrace.

I think most people would, but there is a sizeable number of the Ukip types who are anti any sort of immigration - goodness knows why , the thought of living in a boring monocultural country fills me with dread.

The Justice Secretary told the BBC’s Sunday Morning programme: “If we just open the door, not only will we not benefit the people that we need to, the genuine refugees, but I think we undermine the popular support for this very thing, so I don’t think that’s the right thing to do. We need to make sure that we’re acting for those that need our support.” [Source: Northern Echo]

This appears to have come on the back of France accusing the UK of ‘lack of humanity’ after 150 Ukraine refugees turned away at Calais [Source: Independant]

I know we have a tranche of the zenophobic far-right in this country but surely we would want to support these people?
