Absolute chaos!

From tomorrow a visa centre for Ukrainian refugees will be set up in Lille. It will be a ‘pop-up’. It will not offer appointments or walk-in access for those seeking to come to UK. The most vulnerable cases in Calais will be taken there for biometrics checks. The Home Office will NOT publicise its location and capacity will be small.
Anyone turning up at Calais will be told to go to Paris or Brussels to fill out the correct forms - if you can get an appointment
In Brussels, Ukrainians seeking UK visas will find the embassy has outsourced this work to a private company (a mate of a Tory MP??) and it closes at 3pm. First find it - it is at the back of the station!
Families with UK visa biometrics checks done in Rzeszów (Poland) are being told to travel 200 miles to Warsaw to collect their visas stamp for their passport.
Meanwhile Patel is contacting the Irish to oppose their refugee policy with the abject fear that some of those Ukranian refugees might make it to UK.
All this being allegedly to stop Russian terrorists entering UK. Don’t worry - such terrorists don’t need visas - they come in as tourists and do their worse - evidence Salisbury poisoning.
In the words of James O’Brien (LBC): you - the UK - voted for this and this government intends to make it as difficult as possible for ANY refugees to enter UK!

It is worth remembering that people voted this government in, not because they wanted it, many didn't, but because they considered even the Conservatives to be better than the alternative.

They voted on the basis tat faced with two unpleasant parties you vote for the least unpleasant.

*The child of Gujarati Indian parents who fled to the UK from Uganda just before Idi Amin’s decision to deport all Asians,*

The Guardian thought they'd fled, MaizieD

Wikipedia says differently:

Patel was born on 29 March 1972 to Sushil and Anjana Patel in London.[3][4] Her paternal grandparents were born in Gujarat, India, before emigrating to Uganda, and running a convenience store in Kampala.[5] *In the 1960s, her parents emigrated to the UK and settled in Hertfordshire*[6][7] They established a chain of newsagents in London and the South East of England.[8][9] She was raised in a Hindu household.[10][11] Her father Sushil was a UKIP candidate for Hertfordshire in 2013.[12]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priti_Patel

Idi Amin didn't become president until 1971. Moving to the UK a few years before he became president is not 'fleeing'.

I'm afraid the Guardian Journalist is just repeating a myth. They're not infallible.

Where are the Tory GNs ? I’d honestly be interested to hear if they agree with government’s stance on this.

Well, it seems a fair enough question.

Do you agree or not, *Freya?

No I don’t. How dare you blame us for this. Do you blame us for the war also, probably. Your hatred of your fellow country men and women is quite vomit inducing.

Freya5 I honestly think you've got the wrong end of the stick here. I read it as a genuine open question. There was certainly no blame placed and Lucca said that she wasn't making any political digs or argy bargy intended. I thought she was genuinely seeking opinion.

Doodledog Wed 09-Mar-22 21:56:46

I meant Patel is unfeeling and cruel above - not my mother grin

Oh, don't be so ridiculous and so unpleasant, Freya.

I will say that those I know who did vote Tory (not me!) are appalled by Priti Patel's intransigence and her preference to rules and regulations above traumatised people.

Doodledog Wed 09-Mar-22 21:56:08

freyer, you are clearly annoyed, but your comments to Lucca are uncalled for.

I don't see why Patel should be any more or less racist than anyone else because of her parentage. My politics are not the same as my mother's, and there is no reason they should be, but I do think that she comes across as unfeeling and often cruel.

As for terrorists coming into the country - any terrorist or spy worth their salt will have a set of papers, won't they? Even Johnny English could have managed that. Women and children could be in disguise, I suppose, but half-decent checks at airport security would sniff out hidden explosives or poison vials before they get here. If other countries can sort it out, why can't we?

Where
Did I say I was ashamed of British people ??????

That's all completely uncalled for Freya5. What terrible things to say.

Angry, demanding what Tory voters said, another saying she was ashamed ofBritish people voting Conservative , sat here crying , are you all happy now. Goodnight.

I take it you’re happily living in a country that does share your views Maisie, can you tell me where please.

What are you talking about? You're showing yourself up.

Lucca Wed 09-Mar-22 21:42:07

No. Read my posts. Where any criticism of my fellow countrymen???????

Freya5 Wed 09-Mar-22 21:40:29

Lucca

Freya you clearly have not read my posts. Nowhere did I blame you or anyone else except the government for this. I thought my question was phrased quite reasonably as a matter of fact.
Where do you see any evidence of hatred for my fellow countrymen/women ?? Your comments are
Report worthy but I don’t do that. Instead i will ask other posters what they think of your remarks to me

I’m sure you will. Report if you like. Not much different to another poster wanting Patel to go back to where she came from. Hatred rather a bit strong, but disdain is obvious for anyone who voted Conservative wouldn’t you say.

Just read on local news, a Ukrainian women and her daughter reunited with her mum, having travelled through Moldova, and flew into Luton, papers sorted visa given. Also at our local port, a local-haulage firm have been successfully transporting donations to a neutral area between Poland and the Ukraine, their Ukraine colleagues then take over. Maybe not a big deal for many on here, but it is doing something positive. Am proud of our Conservative town. An appeal also gone out for lorry drivers to be aware of stranded Ukraine drivers who will be given support.

If any positive is coming out of this government's failings here, it is that it makes us want to help those poor Ukranians even more.

I am ashamed that the British people voted this evil government in and also voted for Brexit which is causing problems getting donated goods to the Ukraine.
We need to take responsibility even if you personally did not vote for the above!

Yes because we have not got enough houses to place them in.

Shandy57 Wed 09-Mar-22 21:03:46

I've just watched Question Time and they discussed this.

The Ukrainian Ambassador joined by satellite link and reminded the panel that only women and children have been allowed to leave.

It's too bad and I feel so terribly sorry.

Freya5 Wed 09-Mar-22 20:57:19

I do hope that those who voted for Brexit feel a small amount of remorse for what is happening. Obviously not about the war but for the way i which are govt are dealing with the Ukranian refugees who want to come to the UK.

This is nothing to do with Brexit. Ukranians have always had a free pass, no visa, to enter the EU for a number of months, now because of war, for 3years. They are also being registered on entering the EU. We have never been in Schengen, which allowed the above.
I totally agree that we should be doing this more efficiently and quickly, these poor people need to be with relatives who can care for them. Why are you saying this is to do with Brexit, and no I don’t feel at all guilty. Putin is the guilty one here, not people who voted for Brexit.

What a shambles it is¬ taking less time to travel across Europe than to get across the channel ? Other countries managed to get organised fairly quickly. Instead our Government makes people jump through hoops - giving an address to go to and finding only a telephone number on a gate, then later told to travel 60 miles to Lille. Some have to go to Brussels for assistance. The Government should have been pro-active with more help at Calais from the start.
