Everything crossed. Nazanin has had her passport returned.

That's great news; I know it isn't definite but keeping everything crossed!

It's certainly not a certainty. Could it be something to do with negotiations over oil, or am I overly suspicious?

I think it’s a lot to do with trade. They have something to sell, we want to buy it.
I just pray that we have sent some good negotiators.

If it gives everyone a way to save face and get Nazanin - and hopefully others - out I don't think I care what they negotiate trade wise. I certainly agree that it this is the case they have hopefully sent the best they can MerylStreep.

I would think that's unlikely to be true GG.

Mr.Wintour is a very experienced political journalist, he is also saying that the U.K. negotiating team is currently in Iran.

Tulip Siddiq Nazarin’s MP has apparently confirmed that the U.K. is currently renewing her U.K. passport which had expired.

Yes I think that is right.

Just hope the British team is fit for purpose.

The negotiators are not generally politicians, are they WWM although they may have one with them.

I have no idea how the politcal tectonic plates may have changed re Iran/Russia/UK . On the principle of "my enemies enemy is my friend" perhaps things have moved just enough to make this possible.

No they are usually civil servants. My concern is (although I guess this is a different department) that many of those skills were lost when we were members of the EU. All the professionalism resided in Brussels for all members to call on when necessary.

The UK government must have finally settled the £400 million it owes to the Iranian government for the non delivery of tanks in 1970s. The UK government took the money but never deliver the goods. Should have settle the debt a long time ago.

Applegran Tue 15-Mar-22 12:22:13

I hope its true and that others will also be finally able to return home.

Antonia Tue 15-Mar-22 12:32:23

I would love this to be the beginning of her return to the UK.

volver Tue 15-Mar-22 12:43:18

Everything crossed.

It's a bit more complicated than the UK just not paying their debt, there were sanctions that prevented the payment.

I hope they've found a way through that suits everybody.

True WWM. I think the knowledge and experience is still there but spread very thinly sadly. There was so much we just relied on from Brussels accompanied by so much lazy incompetency in the government.

Marvellous. So wonderful to have any good news but this is spectacular.

Oldbat1 Tue 15-Mar-22 13:08:10

Thrilled to read this. I really hope this happens now. Has the UK paid what was due then after all this time? Please don’t let Johnson anywhere near as he is the reason why she has been kept a prisoner due to his original remarks re journalist which he “misspoke”.

Ailidh Tue 15-Mar-22 14:26:30

I'm so pleased to hear this glimmer.

I noted in the BBC news app that the prime minister has had the wit not to comment this time.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 15-Mar-22 15:01:30

We had to get agreement from the USA with regard to sanctions etc.

GillT57 Tue 15-Mar-22 15:06:39

I do hope it is true, her MP has worked tirelessly on her behalf, and in supporting Nazanin's husband.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 15-Mar-22 15:09:22

Weirdly the Ukraine war has worked in her favour.

We need Iranian oil.

Gossamerbeynon1945 Tue 15-Mar-22 16:01:48

I have everything crossed. I really, really hope that she comes home very soon!

I think the US found ways of working round the sanctions. If we’ve paid the money back that we owe them to access their oil it should have been paid back years ago.

Some commentators are talking about this coming Saturday or Sunday.
Saturday is Imam Mahadi’s birthday.
Sunday is Oil Nationalization day.
These are days when the government grant leniency to political prisoners.

MerylStreep Tue 15-Mar-22 18:52:02

North Korea are hand in hand to get around the sanctions.

Do not count your chickens before they hatch. The Iranian government has played cat and mouse with Nazanin since she was first arrested.

I will not believe she is free or there is any hope of her being released until her feet are on British soil.

mokryna Tue 15-Mar-22 19:24:40

Hope you know who keeps their mouth shut, no names.

Deedaa Tue 15-Mar-22 19:31:49

Yes I hope someone is putting a gag on Johnson.

Frankly he couldn’t be visiting Saudi at a worse time. Johnson has constant verbal diarrhoea and can’t stop trying to be the centre of attention, and will as a result say worse things at the worst time.
