He still tried to self-justify today and I was yelling at the TV "oh, just shut up, stupid".

The UK government must have finally settled the £400 million it owes to the Iranian government for the non delivery of tanks in 1970s. The UK government took the money but never deliver the goods. Should have settle the debt a long time ago.

exactly. this salient fact is so often overlooked/unreported.
nothing justifies holding mrs ratcliffe hostage of course, but there has been such a lot of one-sided reporting on uk/iran relations and obligations.
imagine if they owed us £400million for undelivered goods since the 1970s.
we'd never hear the end of it. whereas i have found many people here quite ignorant of this history.

There was a regime change and Iran was subsequently sanctioned years later. Payment of the money would have been in breach of UN sanctions.
The money has been in a holding account, I believe, but there is a dispute about interest too.
Some politicians have been urging for the payment of this debt for some time, one being Jeremy Hunt.

The debt is from when the Shah was leader, welbeck.

She’s at the airport. She’d on her way home. DH and I are in tears!! I hope Johnson gets no credit for this….Tulip has fought long and hard for this moment. I’m so happy for Nazanin’s husband and daughter.

Just had a BBC news flash on my phone saying that she is on her way home. Thank goodness. Wonderful!

At last. This poor lady has suffered so much. Our attempts to set her free have been slow and ineffective and in Johnson's case downright damaging. Her husband who has fought tirelessly must have wondered if this day would ever come and their young daughter will be so happy to be wrapped in her Mum's arms again. Wonderful, uplifting news.

I haven’t seen it myself. DH has the tv on ( probably Sky News.. it’s what he usually watches) and shouted to me that Tulip had tweeted ‘she’s at the airport’.

I’ve just checked and she has tweeted it….just said she’s at the airport….more to follow.

Just seen the breaking news. That’s wonderful and what a family reunion they will have but so sad it’s taken six years.

A it late, but, Pippa Crear, Daily Mirror, posted it.

Like everyone else, I'm overjoyed to hear the news.

Let's hope she actually makes it onto the Plane this time.
No more silly buggers stopping and re-arresting her.
Fingers crossed this is it and she gets home.

I feel such relief for Nazanin. Marvellous news. Won’t be long until she is reunited with her family who have waited so long for the moment to come.

As I said, I will not celebrate until the plane touches down in the UK. It would be quite in line with Iranian conduct so far, to change their minds when the plane with her in it is taxi-ing on the runway about to take off, and decide to lock her up again.
