Tory MP in drugs and sex scandal

In an interview in the Daily Telegraph today, Norman Tebbitt is very critical of the quality of the current generation of Conservative MPs, in it for what they can get out of it rather than to serve their country.

Whatever one might say about Norman Tebbitt, he was always a man of strict probity and it is clear he finds these new people as distasteful as everybody else.

Whether he was caught by a sting or not. he was indulging in behaviour that most people consider reprehensible and disgusting and inappropriate for an MP.

I have never bought into the 'he was just unlucky to be caught' excuse.

We can blame a country far away (Russia) for interfering in British politics. Brexit was a triumph for Putin who gloated about weakening the EU and the UK ,and the election of this brexit-supporter with a suspiciously high vote in this constituency in 2015 and 2019 may have been helped by dodgy Russian money.

More and more sleaze allegation against Warburton as he secured a lucrative part time job for a relative with the company of the dodgy Russian.

Now he is claiming to be mentally ill. He has obviously run out of other excuses

varian. What a nasty thing to say! I doubt that even private mental facilities take people in who are not ill, and it is quite possible that his behaviour results from his mental state. This sort of thing happens to quite ordinary people, a period of out of character behaviour preceds or is part of a mental breakdown.

If he checked in because of drug addiction they will have accepted him.

Many people when caught out have claimed ill health of some sort including poor mental health. We can all name them.

A healthy degree of scepticism is rational when giving consideration for these claims

I have a relative who was sectioned under the Mental Health Act for their own safety. They had been behaving out of character ( they were usually kind, family oriented, generous, and hugely popular) & ended up commiting a fraud, sleeping rough and involved with a very 'dodgy' female and suicidal. A total mental breakdown & a subsequent diagnosis of bi-polar disorder did not prevent them serving a prison sentence for the fraud.
On reflection I could see previous patterns of bi-polar behaviour... but they had been easy to dismiss as usual ups & downs of a stressful job/ coping with life crises etc.

It does happen and it can accelerate quickly.

So why has the mental health only occurred now ?
He didn’t appear to have mental health problems prior to being caught or did he ? I m happy to be corrected

Mental illness, crazy behavior, it’s what happens when you think you are unaccountable, parallel with Prince Andrew, exactly the same stupid behavior by someone who knows better.

David Warburton says he has "enormous amounts of defense" and doesn't believe he has done anything wrong.

Owen Paterson , Boris Johnson, Prince Andrew, David Warburton - all believe in their own innocence, so we are told.

No. many, many ordinary people suffer from mental illness and behave in peculiar fashion. I am sure all of us have such people somewhere in our lives.

Those with genuine mental health issue deserve empathy and support, particularly as it is so very very difficult to get help.

Being accused of sexual and drug related crimes, will of course cause distress and quite severe anxiety I would have thought. Time to put on those big boys pants and face up to your behaviour.

How do you know that this MP isn't genuinely mentally ill?

We don't but people with addiction problems are still charged with the crimes they committed whether they were under the influence or not. Substance addiction is a cause not an excuse.

Faking mental health problems is a way of avoiding responsibility, either way he is not going to be involved in public office again, will it make any difference to any sex abuse allegation?, that will be investigated surely.
