War crimes in Ukraine

The invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent bombings and acts of war have sickened the entire population of the UK and other countries, but this morning I heard something that seems to plumb new depths. My son arrived with my grandson this morning, having taken part in Park Run (grandchild got a PB today?) and my son son told me that he’d seen an item about Ukraine in which during the withdrawal from the Kviv area, the Russians had apparently shot all/many of the men between the ages of 14 and 60. They had been shot in the back of the head apparently and the bodies left by the side of the road. This is a blatant war crime and despite all the other atrocities happening in Ukraine I felt absolutely shocked and sickened. I commented that this was what happened frequently under the Nazis in WW2. I haven’t seen it reported though and wondered if anyone else has seen a report. Is this what we can now expect from the Russians in this desperately tragic theatre of war?

Went to get some shopping an hour ago and to meet a friend after for coffee, thought I’d pick up a news paper, there on the front of The Mirror, not a paper I’ve ever read myself, was a little 6 year old boy, standing next to a mound of earth which covered his dead mother, goodness knows what she suffered and he witnessed, I just felt the tears falling, came home I felt such a fool. I don’t have the news on now and don’t read about atrocities but I couldn’t miss that. There’s nothing we can do though it’s just too much for them to bear.

Yes Jabberwok, the genie can’t be put back in the bottle. Imagine the problems of countries policing the nuclear weapon free option. We only need think of Iraq to see how difficult that is.

Jaberwok Wed 06-Apr-22 10:59:19

I agree, I don't think Putin will do that, lets hope and pray that he doesn't. The problem with banning anything is that once something is invented, you can't un-invent it so no matter what agreements are in place, somebody, somewhere at sometime may resurrect the formula. Complaining after the event would of course be too late.

I wasn’t a member of CND but I agreed with it’s aims. If we’d have been able to rid the world of nuclear weapons we wouldn’t have been in this position now, in my opinion, because I think NATO would have become involved. It’s the fact of nuclear weapons that has stopped any intervention from NATO in this case. If Putin puts a big toe over the border of a NATO country we’ll be in, for better or for worse. I don’t think he’ll do that though.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 06-Apr-22 10:38:39

I used to be a member of CND and always went on marches.

Now I’m totally muddled about what I think.

….the free world is, apart from bleating their disapproval, incapable of actually doing anything…….

This is the problem isn’t it? We are all impotent because of the very things which we were told protect us. Nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons are actually protecting Russia.

Callistemon21 Wed 06-Apr-22 10:29:05

It was always there, under the ground and there it should stay -
Sanctions
And Russia (an ally of Iran)

It's all linked, isn't it.

Jaberwok Wed 06-Apr-22 10:25:39

Realistically? No one can do anything to stop Russia doing exactly as it pleases, how it pleases and when.. China has its eye on Taiwan, and will now be aware that it too can strike where and when it pleases The EU is united in hand wringing , plus pious platitudes and nothing much else. America is run by the most incompetent president in living memory. No wonder the tyrants of this world rub their hands in glee and do exactly as they please, from the cutting down of the Amazon by Brazil, to the rape and murder of a three year old in Ukraine, the free world is, apart from bleating their disapproval, incapable of actually doing anything. And yes, Germany and the EU should be ashamed.

Liz Truss demands EU leaders stop filling Putin's 'war chest' with oil and gas money amid revulsion at Bucha massacre - as Germany STILL refuses to back a ban on Russian energy (copied from The Daily Mail)

Liz Truss isn’t the brightest bulb in the box is she?

You might say that but it took the feeble attempts of several Foreign Secretaries making no progress before Liz Truss managed to get two Iranian hostages freed.

Back to the main point.

I hope these last two posts are aimed at the folk trying to belittle the European nations that are also standing up to Putin, are they?

Nope - they are aimed at keeping this thread on track.

Anyway, as we were, have we (the UK) expelled all Russian diplomats? I sincerely hope so, but I’ve missed any announcement about it, if there was one.

Has the tory party returned all its donations from Russians? grin

I’ve never heard the word euromice before. I must live a very sheltered life.

Sorry, I'm trying to stay above it all. But euromice??

???

Interestingly, volver. "Euromice" seems to be a nomenclature coined originally by Italian communist politician, political theorist and European federalist Altiero Spinelli. He is known as one of the founding fathers of the European Union.

Perhaps Jaberwok [Wed 06-Apr-22 08:09:48] is showing support for the EU hmm or simply just trying to be clever without research grin. I imagine that it's been picked up from some rightwing blogger, vlogger or tweeter who doesn't know its origins either.

It would help a lot if pressure was put on China to condemn Russia
The Russian people do have a pretty good idea what is going on but the daren’t comment for fear of being jailed. WMD and Nuclear weapons would have been used if “mutually assured destruction” was not guaranteed.
Parallel Ukraine with Vietnam, if defenders are determined they make it impossible to occupy a country however many bombs you have.

I'm not sure what pressure could be put on them Katie. What do you suggest?

To hell with the whole Europe debate ..... we are all fellow human beings and people are suffering appallingly. Let us do positive things like sending aid, offering our homes and lobbying our MPs.

Fully agree Luckygirl13 If people want to discuss Brexit either find a suitable forum or start a new one.

I know that this is a thread about war crimes in Ukraine, which is what we are supposed to be talking about. But there are many people questioning how the Russian people can believe the lies that are told by their government.

Well look around you folks. In the midst of this war there are still members of the press who are trying to stoke the them and us attitudes to Europe that led us to the mess that is Brexit. Be warned.

Sarnia Wed 06-Apr-22 09:23:17

I defy anyone not to be moved to tears of sorrow and despair when watching the harrowing footage of the mass murder and wanton destruction the Russian Army is inflicting on the Ukraine and its people. A recent TV clip showed a 74 year old Ukrainian grandmother being taught how to fire a rifle. When she was asked how she felt (yes, stupid question) her reply was that she would stand and fight for the town where she had been born and lived her whole life. She said she would rather die as a Ukrainian than live as a Russian. sad

It's interesting to be told first hand that some posters can be relied upon for opinions formed via the method of restricting information sources.

It's the Leave voter's compulsion to despise and belittle the EU.

They worked themselves up into a fine old lather about it 6 years ago and have been foaming at the mouth ever since...

Luckygirl3 Wed 06-Apr-22 08:57:20

Today's news that a Ukranian mother wrote her child's name and details on her back in case they might get separated in the chaos of war struck a chord - what an appalling thing to have to do.

I have no idea how this maniac can be stopped, other than by the means that Hitler was stopped - death and misery and atrocities dragged out for years.
