Ahead of Earl and Countess of Wessex's tour of the Caribbean the Antigua and Barbuda Reparations Support Commission has written an open letter criticising the Royal Family for past comments on slavery.

Edward and Sophie had planned to visit Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, St Lucia, and St Vincent and the Grenadines. Of those four countries, Grenada, Antigua and St Lucia have raised issues of reparations or ditching the monarchy over recent days and weeks.

The Grenada leg of a royal tour of the Caribbean has been called off at the last minute - as the family were told by Antigua and Barbuda to avoid "phony sanctimony" over slavery.

I’ve just seen on the news that Sophie and Edward are no longer visiting Grenada on their tour. These tours are completely outdated in my opinion.

Why are more countries applying to join the benign Commonwealth of Nations, then?

Perhaps it’s time the royals stopped trying to make the Commonwealth all about them. They didn’t create it, they don’t lead it and more than 90% of its citizens don’t have the Queen as their head of state.

There does seem to be a bit of a misconception about the Commonwealth. Obviously it grew out of empire and the Queen is Head of the Commonwealth. But that is a symbolic position only, and is not hereditary. Charles will be Head because the Queen let it be known that she wanted that, but William has said he thinks after that, it probably won't be him.

The Secretary General of the Commonwealth, the person who does all the work, is Baroness Scotland.

Member countries of the Commonwealth include European countries such as Malta and Cyprus, and other countries that have nothing to do with the Queen, such as India or Rwanda (how topical...) Nothing to do with royalty turning up to wave from the back of a land rover.
