Are the Royal Family losing their touch?

A couple of weeks ago we had the disastrous PR associated with the Caribbean tour, and now the judgement of the Queen is being questioned, for giving Prince Andrew such a prominent role in the Duke of Edinburgh's memorial service.

The position of the Royal Family depends very strongly on their acceptance by, and the support of, the public both here and overseas; are they losing that?

Perhaps it was more to do with Wiliam's position as President of the FA.
No it’s just a chance to show off bad manners by booing again.
They never consider that it reflects on the impression other countries get of our fans’ behaviour.

As far as I read, they were booing William - because, historically, they boo any symbol of the so called "elite establishment".

I think this stems back to Liverpool feeling they have been abandoned by various governments, and by the scandal of the Thatcher inspired Hillsborough cover up and smear campaign.

Callistemon21 Tue 17-May-22 15:57:17

That's what understood, too.

They feel that the FA, amongst others, was guilty of a cover-up (as do many others) and William, as President of the FA, was booed.

What I understood, too

Mollygo Tue 17-May-22 16:19:24

I understood that, but booing anyone gives a bad impression to those watching-including the younger fans. I’m not in favour of promoting anything that promotes bad behaviour. What’s the point of teaching them manners in school when adults are praising bad manners in public?

When the Queen dies, the commonwealth will cease to be. The British islands of the Caribbean have made it clear they want to be independent. Also Canada, and Australia have also stated that they too want to govern themselves. Time moves on, from when the Queen came to the throne. It is a different place now. Technology is huge. Computers, the internet, mobile phones, Not even touching on the universe. People in charge have to be able to manage all of this in their stride and interact accordingly. It wouldn’t do for the workers to be more adept than the Chief.

When the Queen dies, the commonwealth will cease to be.

Of course it won't.

Really, where do people get these ideas from?

volver Tue 17-May-22 16:41:55

Sorry if that came across as a bit short kgnw28225, but the countries of the Commonwealth are mostly already independent. Many of them don't have the Queen as Head of State, and of those who do, they still have their own parliaments and governments.

When the Queen goes, Charles will take over as Head of the Commonwealth, which is a purely ceremonial role. After Charles, who knows? But the Commonwealth will continue.

The costs of travel and tickets

What's your point Anniebach?

Grany Wed 18-May-22 14:59:07

Hahaha

Grany Wed 18-May-22 15:01:10

It reads

I do not wish to participate in a pageant that celebrates a monarchical regime based on hierarchy, deference and inherited wealth, status and power. It is a leftover from feudalism that defies modern aspirations for democracy, egalitarianism and meritocracy

What about families around the country who do or may inherit homes from their parents, grandparents, aunts , uncles etc ? would this banned ? Become illegal etc?

Grany Wed 18-May-22 16:51:21

Charles and Camila tour cut short by Trudeau a slay in the face for monarchy

I don't see that as the same thing.

nadateturbe Wed 18-May-22 17:13:34

I like the motto but I wouldn't dare wear it

Honeysuckleberries Wed 18-May-22 17:32:41

The cost of living crisis makes the Queen’s grossly excessive platinum jubilee look crass
Two thousand street parties and private bashes? Do they not know inflation is leading to unbearable food poverty?

I believe street parties are a matter of choice from town to town… not compulsory

Callistemon21 Wed 18-May-22 22:13:36

Two thousand street parties and private bashes? Do they not know inflation is leading to unbearable food poverty?

Yes, we know.

So should we cancel everything and make joy unlawful?

Those who can and have will do their best to help those who have not.

Banning parties and festivities is not going to feed people.

Callistemon21 Wed 18-May-22 22:14:50

Well, at least something has cheered you up. I'm glad.
?

volver Wed 18-May-22 22:21:23

Wait, what? Who's talking about banning anything?

No, let's have bread and circuses and the charity of "Those who can and have doing their best to help those who have not."

God bless us, every one. Let them eat cake.

(I can't shoehorn in any more quotes. Ever so humble, maybe.)

Callistemon21 Wed 18-May-22 22:27:34

I didn't say it was right.
It is how it is just now, though, wrong though it may be.

Any suggestions how cancelling a street party will make a jot of difference to getting rid of this government?
Even the Republicans here are joining in.

Circus - that's a good idea for entertainment. We'll see which of the neighbours are acrobats and fire-eaters.

Bread - yes, on the list, thanks
Cake - a Republican has volunteered to make a cake.

Callistemon21 Wed 18-May-22 22:28:40

Ever so humble
No, that doesn't suit you at all! ?

Because it isn't.
