Is this Boris’s latest attempt to divert us all from dwelling on the fact that he repeatedly lied to parliament?

Coastpath Sun 17-Apr-22 11:38:44

But Aveline, the thumbs up message was an invitation to put one emoji up, no dialogue, no unpleasantness, just a vote to get the message across. Only one person did this.

It was straightforward.

It is not straightforward. You might not agree with the Rwanda proposal but agree something radical needs to be done.

Coastpath Sun 17-Apr-22 12:00:08

Chestnut So those people don't agree with the proposal/policy. They are thumbs downers.

It is that simple.

I think every single poster on here believes something radical needs to be done.

But not every single poster believes people have to be turned away. They want to help everyone who wants to come here which is not possible.

My son who is a student has a car too and so do lots of his friends. He doesn't have Romanian wife and two small children as far as I know but tbh I don't know anything about the people who live in my road other than passing pleasantries with them. I certainly don't make moral judgements on them or their accommodation..

We can help everyone who comes here. But we may decide that some of the people who come here have to go back to their own countries. Its a myth that everyone who thinks we should treat migrants better thinks we should welcome them into this country irrespective of their back story.

I think that's what some people think, that we're saying we should just take everybody, and support them and their families for ever more. That's not what we're saying.

I am not making moral judgements on anyone, just stating facts. You can make up your own mind from those facts.

So now you are calling me a liar! How very unpleasant. What's the point of discussing anything if people are going to lie?

Rosina Sun 17-Apr-22 12:58:24

One family, Volver, living in a cottage in the grounds of Lambeth Palace. 'Hardly flinging wide the doors of welcome. No inconveneince at all to the Archbishop; he still has many rooms to use.

volver Sun 17-Apr-22 13:03:36

You've got me bang to rights there Rosina. Been googling?

Probably best to dis-establish the whole church, wouldn't you say?

What a very unpleasant comment to a regular poster. I hope you apologise.

Here's a link to the Lambeth Palace website.

How many do you think we could squeeze into the Great Hall? Probably won't get so many in the Lollards Prison, but its worth a go. Maybe we could build a tree house in the Fig Tree.

I hear the Tower of London is mostly standing vacant too. Anybody got any contacts there?

Aveline Sun 17-Apr-22 13:25:14

This thread encapsulates why many Grans say they don't want to read the news and politics threads. If you disagree with the predominant posters you're wrong and deserve opprobrium heaped upon you.

volver Sun 17-Apr-22 13:34:29

The least nasty thing about this thread is the comments made towards people who "disagree with the predominant posters".

Rampant and blatant racism, mostly now deleted, I think; derogatory comments aimed at people who think we should not demonise asylum seekers; continual repetition of untruths about migrants; scapegoating of foreigners; criticism of people who are trying to help.

Some people deserve opprobrium.

Rosina Sun 17-Apr-22 13:45:57

Too right, Volver. I don't want to disestablish the Church, but feel so strongly, and always have, that the followers of a carpenter who lived a life that he wanted us all to emulate have a pretty odd way of demonstrating that Christian life, when they are decked in expensive apparel and living in palaces. When the government is criticised for not doing enough, it is almost laughable coming from a man living as the Archbishop does.
I agree wholeheartedly with you, Aveline; civilised discussion would be so good, but often it becomes insulting and sneering - almost like PMQT.

volver Sun 17-Apr-22 13:49:39

I'm an atheist.

When a man who has the attention of the Anglican community says something important, I don't care how many people are living in his house. I don't believe it is acceptable to criticise a man for highlighting the wickedness of the government just because he lives in a palace which he doesn't own.

Rosina Sun 17-Apr-22 14:07:59

Not hypocritical at all then, in any way?

No, they don't. I haven't read one single post from anybody claiming that everybody should be allowed to stay.

"Agreeing with the Rwanda solution" and "something radical" aren't the same thing at all.

volver Sun 17-Apr-22 14:14:58

No, not really.

I'm not a follower of the Russian Orthodox faith but I admire the priest who came out and said the church were wrong to support Putin. It is possible to separate a person's faith and their attitude to a government that wants to ride roughshod over the rule of law.

Nobody would be happier than me to see all forms of organised religion disappear, but I don't think I have the right to criticise what others believe in so strongly.

volver Sun 17-Apr-22 14:15:24

Sorry, that was for Rosina
