That’s it really, just Edward and Sophie are on tour. I saw that a planned visit to Grenada has been pulled.

You get a photo card of the Queen on your diamond wedding anniversary. Years ago mum was always adamant she did not want to celebrate and definitely did not want a card from the Queen. Come the day, where’s my card? Mum thought the Queen somehow knew and sent automatically! I had to write to the palace and get a card two weeks late. It had pride of place on the mantelplace.

Thank you Lucca I’m looking forward to it so much.

MissAdventure Tue 26-Apr-22 09:43:03

Ah, that's lovely.
I have seen a couple who were married for 70 years get a card from her maj.
smile

I really can't see that kind of thing carrying on though.

My mum was very proud of hers, we’d have been in trouble if we’d forgotten to apply for it.

Jenn53 Tue 26-Apr-22 11:52:16

Exactly! Who are these courtiers who seem oblivious to the world outside of the palace walls organising these adventures to the Caribbean? William and Katherine have just had a tour there which they seemed to have enjoyed and which was widely reported. Then in quick succession we have Anne and now Edward and Sophie? why? it doesn't make sense. Ah well, perhaps, it is a way of giving them their free winter sunshine break in one full sloop!!

Complete waste of money these tours. The Royals have been living on benefits for donkey's years but their benefits are a lot better than those accorded to the poor, old and homeless. And the tours simply give aspirant politicos a platform in the world press and TV for their reparation demands. Stop them now and stop a new Royal yacht.

Namsnanny I tin there are very good reasons why the Queen supports the commonwealth of Nations

These are some of the reasons:

What does it mean to be part of the Commonwealth?
The Commonwealth is an association of countries across the world. Although historically connected to the British Empire, any country can apply to be a member of the Commonwealth, regardless of its intersection with Britain's colonial past. The Commonwealth consists of 54 countries, including the United Kingdom.

What is the importance of Commonwealth?
Commonwealth member countries benefit from being part of a mutually supportive community of independent and sovereign states, aided by more than 80 Commonwealth organisations. The Commonwealth Secretariat, established in 1965, supports Commonwealth member countries to achieve development, democracy and peace.

What are the values of the Commonwealth?
The Commonwealth values, which include the promotion of democracy, human rights, good governance, the rule of law, individual liberty, egalitarianism, free trade, multilateralism and world peace, emerged in independence movements and the struggles for self-government.

What are the 5 main goals of the Commonwealth of Nations?
Its mandate is to strengthen civil society in the achievement of Commonwealth priorities: democracy and good governance, respect for human rights and gender equality, poverty eradication and sustainable, people-centred development, and to promote arts and culture.

Thank you Emily I googled some of the above too.smile
Are there any events or occasions that have shown this I action do you know?
It's not that I'm against the organization's, just that I only hear about it when a royal is visiting.

Good reasons for the commonwealth of nations but monarchy should have nothing to do with the commonwealth as their values are not the same as commonwealth Royals are unaccountable exempted from the freedom of information act which as a public body they shouldn't be secretive above the law and not egalitarian. So the commonwealth should dith the Royals.

It's time for the commonwealth got disbanded Britain has no rights to figure heads in any country

volver Tue 26-Apr-22 16:58:17

It would be a very sad thing if the Commonwealth got disbanded. Also its a very unlikely thing.

Why do you think it should be disbanded? Its got next-to-nothing to do with Royalty any more.

I declined to go to my graduation ceremony in 1965 because I didn't want to "bob & curtsey" to the Queen Mother who was Chancellor at the time. I was very bolshie then but subsequently regretted my decision as I deprived my Dad of the opportunity of seeing me get a degree - something that meant to a lot to him. I'm much less bolshie now but still don't think we should be bobbing and curtseying to anyone. The monarchy seems like an anachronism and particularly the way it still behaves towards the Commonwealth.

Joseanne Tue 26-Apr-22 17:08:51

Aw that is sad Lizzie44. I didn't care much for shaking hands with Princess Anne to get my degree in the Royal Albert Hall, but my mum was ecstatic about sitting in the Spencer box. I'm glad I did, because she was ill and died shortly after.

Once the Queen passes I am perfectly happy for the monarchy to be abolished!

They won't end up on skint street. The Monarchy has long outlived it's use.

The palaces and pageantry can go into the hands of the National Trust. The tourists will still visit

I think Ninanana was replying to another poster who wondered why the royals needed to go to the Caribbean.
I'm not sure about the second remark, Twograndchildren
