How busy are the local election stations...do you feel weary of voting when most are unknown candidates or, you vote for the same old....I had a long list to choose from ....

I think the fact that Northern Ireland voted to remain in the EU a united Ireland became inevitable. Which may be imo one of the few good things to have come out of the referendum.

nadateturbe Sun 08-May-22 00:42:47

A United Ireland will come eventually but the support isn't there for it yet.

Labour gains outside London were hardly worth mentioning. It took Cumberland unitary authority, and Southampton – but failed to take Hartlepool, Peterborough, Redditch.

Tories have lost support in the south of England, Labour lost more in the north to the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party.

Of all Labour’s net gains – 137 seats, 65 of them were in Wales where the party is led by “continuity Corbyn” First Minister Mark Drakeford.

compare contrast Labour’s gains with those of the Greens.

In England, Labour gained 52 seats while the Greens gained 60.

In Scotland, Labour won 20 seats with the Greens close behind on 16.

But in Wales, Labour was boosted by 65 seats, while the Greens could only muster up an extra eight.

People don't want tepid Tory Starmer.

“Labour did actually gain seats in North Wales as well as the rest of Wales, 12 more in total than at the last election. The NOC position is common in Wales, as historically independents do well in local elections (long May it continue), and Plaid gained councils although they actually had less councillors than last time in total. Overall, it was an excellent day for Labour.”

My Plaid friends are cockahoop as they’ve gained control of two councils and retained one, my Labour friends are crowing about twelve extra seats in north Wales but despairing at no control and my Tory friends are rather quiet....Casdon ? and I totally agree about the Independents!

For those who may be interested, can I just clarify that the NI election result was not a resounding victory for SF, but a dismal failure for DUP, who lost votes mainly to Alliance.

change from 2017
SF +1.1%
DUP -6.7%

1st preference vote
Republican 38.1%
Unionist 40.1%

What planet are you on Grany? Mark Drakeford wasn’t first minister until 2018, and is, and always has been his own man. Corbyn was unpopular here after 2017, the public don’t associate Drakeford with him at all. There was a Tory surge in the general election in 2019 whilst Labour retained control of the Welsh Government and improved results under Starmer’s UK leadership in 2021- Wales has been Labour since the beginning.

As local elections were only being held in under half of English local authorities, and many Tory Shire counties such as mine, were not voting I think very little can be deduced from the results.
More meaningful obviously in Wales, Scotland and NI.

Am I right in thinking that the met police have only just told the public about more Downing Street fines. After the elections …hmm

That's why Corbyn did so outstandingly well and is now our Prime Minister.

???

To be fair to Grany, she said she lives in Wales, Casdon
(Yes, I found it difficult to believe too.)

CoolCoco Sun 08-May-22 17:23:25

You seem to gloss over the fact that the Tories LOST 400 + seats. The public don't want corrupt liars.

Anniebach Sun 08-May-22 18:00:19

Parts of South Wales Labour since Keir Hardie went tory because of Corbyn, the biggest liar in political history.

Gosh, Grany- you think that the leader of the opposition tells lies? Thank goodness that the leader of the Conservative party is completely honest and truthful. Oh, hang on....

Grany I now find your devotion to Corbyn sad, you were 100% for him through the two elections, we suffered the worse
defeat since the 30’s, Wales lost strong Labour seats because of
Corbyn.

the far left are working hard to get rid of Starmer, they would rather have Boris win the next election than Starmer.

Grany Mon 09-May-22 13:13:17

Starmer is working hard to get rid of the left in his party. He has 11he wants to get rid of I think.

Anniebach Mon 09-May-22 13:37:14

Yes you think grany* you do not know

Ilovecheese Mon 09-May-22 14:32:14

It wasn't exactly a resounding success for Labour in these local elections was it.
They gained 3 councils in London and lost 3 councils in London, so no net gain.
Although the Conservatives lost a high number of seats, they went in the main to parties other than Labour, Lib Dems, Green, independents and a new party called "Aspire" in Tower Hamlets.
Unless Keir Starmer can make more of an attempt to either:
unify the party as he promised,
collect many many more Conservative votes, or
make himself more likeable
he is going to have trouble holding on to his leadership.
Wes Streeting and Lisa Nandy are already positioning themselves, and this is even before Andy Burnham is in a position to make another bid.

If he is serious about purging the entire left wing of the party he will have to find replacements for them.

The so called far left are in no position to act against Keir Starmer. He has been in position for over 2 years, he cannot shift the blame on to anyone else now.

Mark Drakeford seems a likeable man who actually cares about people, he is perceived to be more left wing than Keir Starmer and is considerable more popular and more secure in his position.

Ilovecheese Mon 09-May-22 14:39:24

I think as well that a number of people with more left wing views have already moved on from Labour, hence the increase in numbers for the Green party.
There are also a number of very small new groupings who fielded candidates. These people are acting for themselves now, rather than waiting for the Labour party.
